Man, that's tough to hear. I've been listening to John Prine since the 70's...his songs have always been a big part of my life and there's never been a better live performance I've been to than his. He's always written about things we can all relate to... but in his very own clever, humorous, and sometimes downright sobering style....his songs mean something. Nobody writes like him. Bob Dylan names John Prine as his favorite songwriter. His lastest album just a couple years ago is as good and fresh as his first was. As an amateur guitar picker and singer, I play some of his songs pretty much every day. He's already survived a couple bouts with cancer over the years ... I pray that this doesn't knock him down for good.

Damn. Bummer bummer bummer. Hope he makes it. I have his entire catalog - 236 tunes. I hope it's complete, anyway. Love listening to it on rides. Saw him at Redrocks - Emmy Lou Harris opened for him - they did the duet In Spite of Ourselves. I used to fish at Lake Marie in Kenosha County. Lake Elizabeth, too. Absolutely a favorite songsmith.
PULL THROUGH JOHN.

Did he write, You're the reason our kids are ugly?
One of my favorite performers, and I've turned my son on to him as well. Best wishes John.

Nope, but I see how you're thinkin' he coulda! Right up his alley! Had to look it up, but I do remember chuckling hearing Loretta and Conway blaming each other on the old am radio. John really covers the gamut of emotion, and can bring me from a belly laugh to almost crying baby tears. He's a storyteller and like I told msb in a pm the other day, he has a way of giving some dignity to the everyday loser... Almost feels like a good friend is in the hospital.

Indeed, this does hit at home as John has been in the family for many years. John's tunes have been carrying me from the early 70's while hitchhiking the Pacific Coast (with rocks in my pockets and dirt'n my shoes), to raising my kids, to me hacking away at his tunes on the guitar to this day. His were the first I was determined to learn and finger pick. It was a special moment back in 07 when my son Nick bought tickets for us and for my old school/hitchhiking chum Sean that originally introduced John's soul touching music to me.
For me, personally I think Iris brings the duet tune "In Spite of Ourselves" home the best, YMMV.
Hoping for a successful outcome John!!!

Not to hijack this John Prine thread, but on the side, their duet inspired me to source more of Iris Dement's music. She did the song that concluded the Northen Exposure series, "Our Town". Acclaimed as the best music match to a film, ever. This tune still brings tears to my eyes. Well Done. Here she is with Emmy Lou. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FikZwgj89HIHere it is again, the official soundtrack for the last scene of the last episode of Northern Exposure - only Iris doesn't appear there. A landmark TV series - I have the entire series on DVD and now on MKV video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9IUj1mDENg

Excellent tune. The sound quality is much better on the second version, but I'm a big Emmylou Harris fan as well. When Emmy was younger, I thought she was scrumptious! She has actually blossomed into a very attractive "old hide", too! Saw her in Telluride, beautiful voice. Saw Alison Krauss there, too. Another voice like an angel singin'.

JP and JD (joe diffie) both gone, so sad. not to change subject, but heard now not just healthcare and police, emergency staff getting this but now spreading into grocery store workers. I heard a lot of grocery store workers nationwide are still not wearing gloves, etc. but even my local small town grocery store the workers were wearing gloves and masks for the most part. May or may not help, but if used properly with correct preventive measures, cannot hurt I guess. death toll from 4K to over 12K since April 1st, not good.

Back in the early 70's I had a crude setup to record the albums onto cassettes so I could take John Prine's music along with me. On a trip to Vancouver, a buddy and I were singing along to his music...those were the days. His poetry was like a pallet and paintbrush for the soul.

Inspired me to learn to play guitar in my late teens, and I've been listening to him and playing his songs ever since. Best concerts I've ever been to, and the lyrics to his songs have hung around me and mirrored events and times in my life all these years. If you ever attended a live performance, you felt that you knew him...and the characters in his songs. Had a great rapport with the audience, especially telling stories about how some of his songs came to be. No gimmicks, just outstanding and very original, poignent, humorous, meaningful lyrics and great melodies were all that was needed. Loved all of his stuff right up to his last release in 2018, but this is my favorite era with just Jason Wilber on lead and Dave Jacques on bass for his live performances. This whole concert is on You Tube...never get tired of watching it. This particular song describes to a tee, the time my first "serious" girfriend broke up with me... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ujOTP8oPpY

This is an odd one....
Disclaimer - I'm not denigrating the man or his legacy in any way!!!! SINCERELY!!!
When I heard he was ill, I'd never heard of him.
I asked my wife, who grew up as a country girl, she'd never heard of him.
Asked my parents, who were of the right generation for this.
They'd never heard of him.
Asked my in laws, also country folk of the right age.
They'd never heard of him.
Asked about a half dozen other friends of various ages and backgrounds, and no one had ever heard of John Prine.
I looked up John Prine's greatest hits, found a listing of his top 10 biggest hits.
I listened to every single one of them.
...I'd never heard any of them in my life.
Anyway, once again, NOT trying to denigrate the man, his fans, his legacy, his skill or influence, etc!!!
I've been reading up on him and seems I was missing out on quite a bit.
.....I've got some catching up to do.

I've seen many legendary artists from a wide spectrum of genres. msb I'M GREEN WITH ENVY that you were fortunate enough to have seen J.P. live. I think that would have taken the cake. Serk I was reading an article the other day that described him as, "the greatest artist you've never heard of," or something to that effect. Course a lot of us have. I tried to find the article but couldn't. It's never too late to unfold some of his magic, his music is real deal. As far as song recognition, if you like Sh!t kickin' country like I do, you may know this. David Alan Coe made it popular. Prine co-wrote it with someone else. Cool song but not one of my all time J. P. faves. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OMiLqHTvbKE

To a certain degree Serk, that is the point about John Prine and others like him. Marketing, mainstream radio play, gimmicks, for the most part promoting causes, etc. are not what they've ever been about. It's really just about the song itself, which is why there are so few at this level, and why a lot of them go through their careers unknown to many...they really don't care, they just have something of substance to say. If you do get into listening to some John Prine and of course I recommend that you do, go on You Tube and see some of his live performances....there's tons of them. Listen to the lyrics...what they say and how they're structured. He wrote "Hello in There" when he was in his early 20's. He was a mailman and part of his route included some seniors' homes. Some of the residents had few visitors and always looked forward to him coming by with their mail to break up the loneliness, so he wrote about it from an elderly couple's perspective. That song hit me way back in the early 70's helped inspire me to go out of my way to engage older folks...all these years later and now I'm an older folk, and I now see that song from the opposite side of the spectrum. Just like many folks have never heard of Towns Van Zandt or Guy Clark, two songwriting legends in their own right from your neck of the woods and also favorites of mine...not the greatest vocalists or instrumentalists maybe, but certainly at the top of the list in terms of writing original and meaningful songs that normal people can relate to.

I've seen many legendary artists from a wide spectrum of genres. msb I'M GREEN WITH ENVY that you were fortunate enough to have seen J.P. live. I think that would have taken the cake.
Saw him live 3 times here in BC over the years, had tickets to see him again last Summer but his tour was cancelled due to illness https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OMiLqHTvbKECo-wrote with Steve Goodman, his best friend and writer of the iconic City of New Orleans.

I'd throw John Hartford in there too, maybe.

Yes!!! You and I definitely have to hook up one time when all this sh** is over, you've got great taste in music . Gentle on My Mind is one of the if not the most recorded songs ever, and I love listening to all his songs from his steamboat captain days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqd3RJZM3jI
