Ride Safe, Be Kind

Earth

« on: April 06, 2020, 06:50:34 AM »

One of the channels that I follow on youtube is Shadetree Surgeon.  I like it because the guy is down to earth and genuinely loves bikes of all brands.  Well, yesterday he posted a video that clearly illustrates that we are never safe.  This is about as close to death as you'd ever want to come.

Very scary.
I would have stayed.  He had video showing what happened.  Should have stayed until the police arrived.

I would have left. I feel like a sitting duck waiting for another inattentive driver to come plowing thru. Maybe giving someone contact info would have been the way to go.

Well, for the record, between my brother and I, I'm not the smart one.

The guy comes out no shoes walks in an area that may be glass I know he may be in shock but I just have a problem with this. I would want the guys cell phone and would have a hard time keeping my temper. I would stay for the police and ask them to check his cell phone and for drugs but more than likely that would not happen.

The heart ache the possible loss of life probably due to his carelessness just pisses me off no end.

The other thing is I would NEVER sit on a major road, highway, interstate, and be the last guy. Especially when other lanes are open and available, especially on a bike.  I would get out of there as fast as I can and even to the point of going on the left side apron just to get out of there. I think this is one of the most dangerous things to ever do is be one of the last vehicles on an interstate or major road and trust that the traffic is going to stop. I really have to question his judgement to even be there and allowing himself to be put in that position. There is no reaction time either from being stopped and having traffic come at you at 60 to 80 mph and even dropping the bike and running would not be enough. You would be the grease on the road that allows the car to slide.

The one advantage we have on a bike is maneuverability and speed we have to use this in situations and just ask yourself, what if, when any situation arises.

My wife was the last one on 95 in the center lane and in a car and I was a few cars up. Well I was watching my rear view mirror and sure enough a tour bus driver was not watching what he was doing and locked up the brakes and was coming down the road sideways right towards my wifes car. I was just opening the door and trying to get out when he woke up let up on his brakes and got the bus going to the exit ramp.  It was amazing that it was not blocked but it gave him enough time to get all things under control. I had much more reaction time than this guy in the video since I saw the bus from the distance and it still was not probably going to be enough.

I cannot describe the terror of watching this and it ingrained in my memory as a permanent reminder NEVER put yourself in a situation if possible to rely on others good driving or humanity when your life depends on it. In this situation his life depended on someone else to do what they were supposed to do and it could have ended much differently. This was in his control to avoid if he had just gotten out of there.

I like the op's opening line, but if you fail to plan, you plan to fail, and it may cost you your life.
