As I understand it, the protest wasn't a result of the initial order; rather, it was the governor's increasing arbitrary restrictions.
Yes I heard things like she was selecting items she deemed unnecessary for purchase like paint, seeds for planting, outdoor items like hoses and patio furniture as well as garden and gardening supplies. Also other normal use items in store location be restricted from purchase. Also heard she was restricting travel to second homes or cabins like our governor did. She only disallowed those items in "big-box" stores, not smaller stores. She responded to complaints by saying it was a good chance to patronize smaller stores. She also said you can't go out for a motorcycle ride or take your own boat on the lake... even by yourself. She doesn’t realize that’s some people’s transportation and not just recreation??? Wow.

The initial executive order was valid 3/24 - 4/13. She extended the order with modifications and additional restrictions which probably prompted the rally in Lansing..... Here is the current MI Executive Order which no longer allows things like: traveling to another residence you may own in MI; buying paint in a box store to decorate your home......(you can order it online)......... https://www.michigan.gov/whitmer/0,9309,7-387-90499_90705-525182--,00.html

I did a cursory search, but I'm too deep into my sadly lately daily essential whiskey consumption tonight to dig too far.... (I do find it humorous that in some states weed is essential, and in other states weed still gets you put in prison, where you're most likely to be infected. Can't stand the stuff personally, just find that interesting...)

I share the opinion: I don't ever touch it, but don't think people should go to jail for weed. On the other hand, I think is quite wrong that California considers weed shops an 'essential business' but doesn't apply the same rule for gunshops.

Can't recall the when or why but I had stated here on our board one of these days some body or some one gonna figure out how much fun we as Riders have and if not tax will attempt to curtail it. Could this be what are being kicked off in Michigan? I'm not supposed to do non essential driving or riding here in the ShoMe and I know one or two and maybe more Missouri Highway Patrol types are Riders. Duz I gotta splain Which M H P Trooper I'd rather have pull me over on an attitude justment Ride? Yeah- Thought not! RIDE SAFE.

You're probably right about testing. I hope you're wrong about the camp. What's particularly disturbing to me, is the impact on children. This may seem normal to them the next time.

... What's particularly disturbing to me, is the impact on children. This may seem normal to them the next time. I've had the same concern for what it's doing to children. People are being told, and passing it to the young developing ones, to trust no one, touch no one, and look out for your own well being. It's not going to be easy for youngsters to turn it off as they grow after it has been so strongly impressed upon them.

Some background...I actually live in Lansing. The protest was originally supposed to be around 500 vehicles max it was to be about small business people like me(contractor) being hurt by the latest rules put in place by the Governor. The trump people and others co-opted the protest for their own purposes. This turned the whole thing into a out of control media spectacle which did block traffic on the freeway for 2 miles at least and all roads leading to the Capitol. The Hospital in Question is a half mile down Michigan ave. from the Capitol . I was there... and yes ambulances did have issues getting to the ER bays not serious issues but Hospital workers did have to come out and assist getting emergency Vehicles through the traffic. The Hospital sits on a corner and is only served by the 2 roads... both were heavily congested.
Beyond the behavior displayed at the rally, it should be noted all the people not maintaining social distancing.. The 2 other Michiganders who have commented on this thread and perhaps the rest of you maybe don't realize that Michigan has the 3rd highest rate of infection in the country at the start of today it was over 29000 confirmed cases and nearly 1800 dead. That is the reason for the stringent regulations.... 3 weeks ago when the stay-at-home order was issued the streets around here were nearly empty. Almost no one was out. It stayed that way for 3 to 4 days then gradually people started pushing the limits. Today it seems that traffic is darn near normal around here and I'm here to tell ya there are plenty of loud Harleys out in good weather. People have obviously decided to take the stay at home order less seriously which is perhaps why our cases have gone up by 1 to 2 k per day for 2 weeks I know that it is an anathema for some people to allow the Government to tell them how to live their lives but now in Michigan may not be the time to show we can stand up to it. I liken it to the A=hole that passed me at 100+ on the Fway weaving in and out through traffic the other morning, not giving a crap about who he was endangering with his behavior... If we don't respect for each other now when will we??? My contracting is considered an essential business... when I need to get supplies from the Home Depot, should I have to take a greater risk because some one wants to paint their house while they're stuck at home..... We are all getting our toes stepped on here, businesses are going to fold,we need to stick together during this and do our part and stop compiaining.
.. Willow... You actually have to swap fluids with HIV... you could ride the subway with all kinds of AIDS patients and not contract the disease...hospital workers pretty much had to get pricked with a needle to get aids (30 yrs ago my wife was a RN). not so with Covid 19

It’s good to hear another viewpoint. Do you think the governor went a little overboard on the restrictions or not enough?

Overboard - if she hadn't done that, people would be more inclined to follow the suggestions.

Interesting perspective I can respect that. However, yes the person who wishes to paint their home because the time is now available is acceptable. It may also be mentally therapeutic for many people as well as keeping a husband out of the wife’s hair or vice versa. Work has always been considered therapeutic, whether at work or as a hobby.

The point is with HIV there was no government order for HIV infected persons to not do the things (sex?) that result in fluid swap even though doing so is a 100% guarantee of disease transmission. For what it's worth not social distancing with COVID-19 may or may not transmit the disease and the order was applied to everyone even though at worst case less than 4% have the disease to transmit. Further, transmission of HIV is a death sentence while transmission of COVID-19 of a possible 3% chance of a death result. The bottom line is that it is exaggeration taken to the degree of mass ignorance and bought into by elected government officials. It results in ignorant and unneeded restrictions doing damage not to a few but to many, many. We need to take measures to protect ourselves. Washing of hands; not touching our mouths, noses and eyes; certainly being aware of infected people we might have been near. Social distancing, masks, and whatever measures we personally believe we need to take to protect ourselves should be our choices not dictated by our elected officials. I found it interesting that you approve limiting individuals from buying paint so that you may feel unthreatened as a contractor buying paint. It seems many of us are not concerned about limitations to others so long as we are not unfairly restricted. Homeowners may feel it's more important that they be able to improve their own residences than for a contractor to squeeze a few more dollars out of other homeowners.
