temperature light

Hi all,

After riding for a while when I stop the temperature light comes on and stays on.
I can hear the fan cycle on shortly before the light comes on, but then it cycles off again and the light comes on. It seems like the fan itself works okay, but I don't know why it would cycle  off again.
I don't know if anybody else has had this issue. Sugggestions are welcome. Thanks

have you checked the overflow bottle, there shouldn't be any air in the radiator. Try burping the system. You can also install a simple grounding switch to the wire coming off the temperature sensor on the upper left of the radiator. It will allow for you to manually turn the fan on or let it work on its own.

it does lol like not all the coolant returned to the radiator after it cooled down

Look at the shop manual or your owner's manual for the procedure
on checking the radiator fluid. Once you know what level it
is supposed to be at in the overflow bottle when the engine is at
operating temperature, you can look to see if it is right, or if
the fluid looks nasty and you'll know how to flush it out and put
in new and burp it and all that stuff...

Temp light on my 99 tourer comes on and off at weird times. I have checked everything I can and come to the conclusion that sender set up is bad design. There is a way to use the newer sending unit and rewirer control box. Looks pretty simple, but haven’t done yet. Doesn’t bother me too much because I know it’s not overheating. Is a mod that will be done in the future.

I flushed and bleed  the cooling system and that has resolved the issue.

This is common on early Valkyries.  The 'indicator unit' under the left side cover fails.  Honda doesn't make the part any more, so you need to upgrade to the later temp sender that has the indicator built in.  Then you need to make a simple jumper for the connector the old unit plugs into, so the sender can turn the temp light on directly.  The later temp sender has the same threads, but uses s different connector (spade vs. bullet).

It's a very intermittent problem that may seem fixed, then returns after a while.  However the fix is quite simple.

My temp light has been erratic since 2011.  When I sell the bike in 2042 I may fix it.
