Last summer I think it was we had the ISS pass over our house which was a cool event. It lasted maybe a minute or two from the time I picked it up in the sky to when it was back out of sight.

Stepped out a week ago as the daylight faded. Saw the first stars try to peak through.

Then I saw the first satellite travelling very fast, well faster that others I've seen. Then another, and another.
As I stood there in below freezing wind I counted 43 of them, all in the same direction and about the same separation.

Went inside and googled the String of Satellites. Got Star Link as an answer.

Astronomers that use Time Lapse Photography are getting streaks on their images because of this.

At present these satellites are in a 150 (or so) mile high orbit, and will increase their height to some 500 miles.
It is hoped that when they are that much higher, they reflect less and be less of a problem.

This is just the beginning. Musk is gonna put thousands of 'em up there.

You can put an ISS tracker on your cell phone. Pretty cool to see that thing as it rips across the sky.

I use a phone app to let me know when it's going to be in my neck of the sky.

ISS Detector.

I use Heavens Above to track stuff.

https://heavens-above.com/main.aspx

Back in Feb 2011 I was the night lead on a huge shutdown in our units at the refinery. I got my crew on board and the Shift Supervisor.
I was 60 feet up on a furnace deck with a bullhorn and a radio. We stopped 3 big cranes, shut down our light towers and flipped the unit lights off. A dark refinery is a kinda scary place.

STS-133 was approaching the Space Station as they passed over our location on a perfectly clear evening.

For 4 minutes, dozens of contractors and operators watched something they never expected and would probably never see again. Nobody complained about lost time or schedules or the possible cost.
I was actually very popular with the rank & file and everybody knew who was in charge.
