And planning my route to Asheville.
I’m stopping in Altoona, PA., to see the Horseshoe Curve, and the RR museum.
The google sends me 81s from there to Asheville, NC. Pretty boring...
Looking at 220, 68, 79, 77 to 81. Looks way more pleasant of a ride, and only 20 minutes longer than 81.

Anybody know a reason to avoid these roads?
I’m looking for a more relaxed ride than 81.

TIA,
Craig

Only road on that list that you may not like is 68. Last time i was on that road it was nothing but frost heaves. Ended up breaking a shock mount clean off the frame on the trike on the way to st. Louis. Let me know what day you will be at horseshow curve. If its a sat or sunday i could ride up and have lunch with you. I'm 2 hours from there.  btw, if your running 220 south to cumberland md. then you will be east of the frost heaves. 68 from cumberland to rt. 70 is fine.

Thanks guys, Rick, I want to make the early bird so I’m thinking I’ll be there Friday, head south Saturday so maybe we can meet up then.
I’ll let you know when I know!

I'm somewhat familar with those roads - you'll have fun . Caveat - it's been a few years since I've been on them, so listen to someone else regarding road condition and traffic.

While you're down that way, you'll be close to Seneca Rocks and Greenbank (Nat'l Radio Astronomy Observatory).  Might be worth checking out if you have the time.

US220 to Roanoke. VA then US221 to Linville, NC and then the BRP to Asheville, NC.

Or you can follw US 221 to Marion, NC and then I-40 to Asheville, NC.

Unless, our Fine Governor amends his current stay at home order I'll be headed to Inzane as well if it goes off as planned.

Give me a shout and we'll ride from Roanoke together.

22 West out of Altoona to 219 South thru PA into Maryland great ride, not to technical two lane and little to no heavy truck traffic. 219 will jump into 68 West (Super Slab) for a couple miles back onto 219 South into West Va. There are some nice twisties thru West Va. Quite enjoyable ride as I remember from a few years back. 219 will run into 250 at Elkins. Take 250 East will take you into Waynesboro VA. Waynesboro you can jump on BRP and run down to Ashville area.

if you have time, that is the way to go...I would only take 81 if I had not other option.
