There is an article in the January 2010 issue of American Motorcyclist that explains the new sound test procedure for motorcycles.  It is SAE J2825, "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles".  I'm not going to put it all down here but I want to point out something that would be interesting to Valkyrie owners:
"The set rpm procedure requires that the operator run the engine at the test speed for that motorcycle--5,000 rpm for three and four-cylinder motors, and 2,000 rpm for all others--for at least two seconds."
I guess that because Valkyries don't have 3 or 4 cylinders they can be tested at the same rpm as twins and singles.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I've got a cheap sound meter and we did that test last September on Mark's Valkyrie.  Stationary at 2,000rpm, measured the distance, etc.  His Direct Line exhaust system ( can't remember the name but great sounding) passed the test.

As was pointed out, a modified exhaust will pass but a straight pipe won't.  Sounds (pun intended) good to me.   Wouldn't be good news for some out there.

We musn't look a gift horse in the mouth, fat ladies don't make much noise at 2000 rpm.

I would thing twins are the motors tested at 2,00 rpm's and we would fall in with the fours at 5,000 but maybe Im thinkin backwards

2k rpms for a twin inst so high. just as 5k rpm for an inline 4 is nothing. 5k rpm for thew valk is up there, she would be screaming at that rpm compared to the rest. it would be unfair to test the valk at 5k rpm.

You're so right. At 5k rpm the Valk should be doing well 110 mph if I figured my ratio correctly: 68mph/3000rpm . Xmph/5000rpm, solve for X and I get 113+.  I'm using 68mph at 3k rpm since the speedo is off at least that much. That wouldn't be a fair sound test by any stretch.
