ok so. i changed the oil in my bike. put 5w 40 rotella in it, as was discussed in these forums. put a wix filter that oreillys said was compatible in.

now when im riding i notice a ticking noise. I had read that the valves can make a ticking noise, or it could be the oil filter, but its coming from directly underneath the bike, right by where u drain the oil.
Its consistent, doesnt go away as bike heats up.

Id imagine this is something to be worried about. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Im considering getting an oem honda filter and doing 15w-40 rotella. Also heard someone say something about some 20w-50.

also heard good things about amsoil. I just want to put the best stuff i can get into this bike, because I ride it everywhere and want it to last.

Honda has no recommendation for a 5W oil. That is for more modern engines. 10W is the lightest oil to use. If you live in a hot climate, then 15 W is ok. I live near PHX and use a 10W year round.

No ticking prior to the oil change?

The 5w shouldn't be a factor. The difference between a 5w, a 10w, a 15w, or a 20w is the cold viscosity factor of the oil; the lower the number, the easier the flow when in cold ambient temps. The second number in the oil weight is the viscosity factor at operating temps. 5w40 is not a problem in your Valk. I used to run Rotella before becoming an Amsoil dealer. I now run either 10w40 or 15w50 Amsoil Metric MC oil ( https://www.amsoil.com/c/4-stroke-powersports/10/?zo=5889580 ), depending upon what I have in stock when I'm ready for a change. I run either the Amsoil EAOM103 or a Wix 51356 (regular, or XP. Again, whatever I have in stock at the time). No issues.

As long as you have the right filter, I'd be checking other stuff out before draining the fresh oil out. Loose or missing exhaust header nuts? If you have a piece of fuel line or other hose, you can make a makeshift mechanic's stethoscope and listen around under the bike to isolate the area, presuming you can hear it at idle and not under load. Tough to do the listen test while riding. Good luck.

No oil quiets a Valk motor/trans more than Amzoil motorcycle specific 10-40.  I'm no expert, but I think it's the best there is bar none.

It's all I used until it crept up to $13.50 a quart.

I've used a lot of Shell Rotella T6 5-40 since then (at $20 a gallon), and never had any issue at all, but it does not quiet the bike like the Amzoil.

I've since gone to Mobil 1 10-40 (with no friction modifiers)

Again the EPA has mandated changes to the diesel oil industry. My ride had tranny sounds and shifting got crispy. Changed to dino MC oil within 100 mi. and recycled the T6 thru my old Toyota Sienna.

My 98 Tourer has put 162 k  on the 5w-40.

Does the ticking noise increase with the engine increase in rpms or the bike speed ?

from what i can tell it increases its rate with rpm increase.

a thought:
my radiator cap has been leaking. I wonder if it could indeed be the water pump, since, from what im reading, the waterpump is attached by belt to the engine, so increasing rpm, would increase the rate of the tick. im going to leave it parked until i figure it out. ill look closer at it tomorrow.

Probably just needs the valves adjusted. Most likely just a coincidence that you noticed it after the oil change.
