My Bro Must love me or at least like me a lot cuz he let me fire a couple rounds thru the Golden Boy at the range. Fit wuz fine fer me and when I got sighted and squeezed the trigger the only thing that told me the round-.22 long rifle-was on the way was the pop. I never felt a cursed thing far as recoil goes. And that little survival .22 cal he has Is slicker than snot on a doorknob. Couple of Really Nice weapons. RIDE SAFE.

Did anybody ever notice that Lucas McCain fires his Winchester Model 1892 12 times in the opening credit?

My Henry is a blued .45-70.  I put a Lyman peep tang sight on it.  They didn't make one for this rifle; worked with me on that.  I like the old-timey flavor; reminiscent of the Quigley Shiloh Sharps rifle.  Mine doesn't have a loading gate - wish it did.  I understand they have added that to some of their models.  They have also added .308 caliber to their line a couple years back.

Very interesting the read on Chuck Connors the practice even down to design of the rifle that he used. He got to be very good at shooting it.

Lucas McCain’s Winchester with the D-lever action was an 1892, .44-40 caliber model,The problem, it turns out, was that the show was supposed to be set in the 1880s, twelve years before Lucas McCain’s was produced.

This Winchester gun belonged to Chuck Connors and was inherited by his son, Steve. The family heirloom was owned by Steve until July 17, 2008. Profiles in History..... Auction closed July 30, 2013 sold for $40,000.00.

Since we are talking about Henry rifles...

They have a really cool catalog that can be ordered free of charge from their website.

Be warned, though, that it will make you buying at least one Henry rifle...

Together with the catalog, I've received a really cool bumper sticker:

I'm split between these 2 carbines (both chambered in 357 magnum/38 special):

a) Henry all weather (hard chrome plated): https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/all-weather-big-boy/

b) Marlin 1894 CSBL (stainless steel): https://www.marlinfirearms.com/lever-action/model-1894/model-1894-csbl

Look for one with a threaded barrel for when you move to a non-slave state.....

Suppressed .38 out of a lever gun is a BLAST!

Or rather, is NOT a blast... Wink

Edit - Wait, can ya'll even have threaded barrels in general??? I just thought about that...

Edit edit - Yup, looks like they're okay, at least as of 2019:

In CA, thread barrels are only illegal when installed on semi-auto pistols that use detachable magazines.

Threaded barrel + semi-auto pistol + detachable magazine = illegal [PC 12276.1(a)(4)(A)]
Threaded barrel + semi-auto pistol + fixed magazine = legal
Threaded barrel + revolver = legal
Threaded barrel + single-shot pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + bolt-action pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + lever-action pistol = legal
Threaded barrel + semi-auto rifle = legal
Threaded barrel + bolt-action rifle = legal
Threaded barrel + lever-action rifle = legal
Threaded barrel + pump-action rifle = legal
Threaded barrel + single-shot rifle = legal
Threaded barrel + semi-auto shotgun = legal
Threaded barrel + pump-action shotgun = legal
Threaded barrel + lever-action shotgun = legal
Threaded barrel + single/double barrel shotgun = legal

Serk: Henry has now the X model, that is threaded *and* has a side gate loader (plus the default magazine tube):
https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/big-boy-x-model/

It would be the *perfect* carbine if it was in stainless steel or chrome plated.

I prefer the 20" barrel over a carbine.  A lever action rifle is not a bad self defense gun, but it's not a go-to for me, so carbine portability does not sway me for a lever gun.  You get more push/velocity (on a handgun cartridge rifle), and better accuracy (sight radius) with the longer barrel.  And the longer barrel gives you more ammo capacity and I like 10.  And the 4 inches of extra barrel weighs very little. (Henry) (Or Marlin in blue)

But I would also prefer a loading gate to the tube feed only.  And I definitely like the larger cocking loop (esp. if you have big hands).  (Marlin)  For target purposes, this makes no practical difference at all.  If the bear (or meth head) was charging and you needed more ammo right away, it could make a big difference.

And I prefer blue to stainless, but that is no help.  You won't find a single John Wayne (or other) western with a stainless/chrome rifle in it.   Grin
