Ok - I was talking to my sister the KS Driver's license examiner, and this subject came up , particularly in regards to my MIL (wife and me are taken care of when we exchanged our NCDL for KSDL).
For some background - eventually (Oct 2021 - used to be Oct 2020) - everyone will need to have their state's driver's license / state ID card be Real ID compliant. I hope all of you have been working on that as time comes to renew your Driver's licenses, but if you haven't - check with your state's driver's license office on requirements for this so you can start collecting the required documentation (birth certificates, proof of residence, Social Security card, Marriage license or other documents supporting a name change, and so on). They probably have the requirements for this on a web site. Real ID will be required for flying, and entrance onto or into federal facilities (including Social Security offices and federal courthouses).
Just a public Service announcement and I thought you guys and gals should be aware if this had slipped your mind for more important things lately.

It is my understanding that if you have a valid US Passport, a "Real ID" type drivers license is not needed.
I have seen this in several press/news/TV reports regarding Real ID. However, in doing a web search, I could find some references to that statement but nothing specifically saying that if you have a valid US Passport, a Real ID is not required.
I would be happy to get a Real ID drivers license in SC except for the fact that all the documents I would have to give the SCDMV are all that are needed to steal my ID.
Will the DMV scan all the documents and return them to me? Will they keep the documents? If so, where will they be kept. How long are they kept. If scanned, how long will they stay in the system? What is the security of the state's DMV computer system.
For instance, I have a copy of my birth certificate that I got from my hospital of birth, but its a copy of what's on microfiche. I can't copy it and give it to the DMV because the copy would not contain the stamp that is embossed into the document to assert its authenticity.
In October of 2012 3.6 Million South Carolina Social Security Numbers were Stolen from the SC Department of Revenue. Since SC had this happen, the expectation is that the state has drastically improved its computer security. But, in the 2012 event, SSNs and credit/debit card data was stolen.
Suppose that was all the data required for a Real ID.
I know I am paranoid. But, since I have a valid US Passport, if I need to travel, I believe I am covered.
In any event, I will find out for sure when I have to renew my drivers license next year.

When I got my KS driver's license (with Real ID), I believe the state did nothing but actually verify the documents without making any scans / copies.
I think your passport would make it real easy to change your DL to a Real ID DL (as in, your passport is an acceptable document).
The Real ID covers more than just travel - it will be required to access federal facilities as well (and you're a Veteran).
I understand your concern, since I share that as well.

I have a RealID since IIRC 2017 and used it to fly locally (e.g. CA to TX) as also to Vancouver (Canada) but was asked a passport at the customs at the destination.
It is certainly way better to be able to fly without the need of carrying a passport (i.e. more expensive and harder to replace if lost).

Our great state was to begin issuing these new ID driver licenses this summer, now has been put off for a few more months. We have only had 10 years to get this setup and done. Also have the illegals issued Driver licenses. DMV is closed.
I do have a passport which I can use. Though don't fly very often.
