Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: May 21, 2020, 06:08:11 AM »

I had another of those nagging, old familiar hunger-pangs again, so… I took care of it. As is nearly always the case, I hadn’t decided upon a specific dining target, but I did have an idea and a couple of possible options in mind. I wandered off wondering just where we might actually wind up…

Most of my recent day-rides have been towards locations more or less west of here, so it seemed entirely appropriate to wander in another direction this time… I recalled a pretty good BBQ establishment in Palatka… a good and different direction in which to head. We hadn’t visited that place since back in ‘W’s’ first term, though, so… Hmmmm, wonder if it might still be open? It is! And, that’s not all!

That place is now open for limited dining-in, so I got a treat in more ways than one!!! The Q was actually even better than I’d remembered it being, and… the folks there seemed really happy to see me! Nope, nobody remembered me from before, of course, but they were mighty glad to still be around and to have customers making purchases! I didn’t disappoint them…

Man, that was some mighty fine chow, and it sure felt good to be sitting at a table and being served instead of standing beside our girl eating from a carryout box balanced precariously on her seat with a drink on the ground beside the side-stand foot… I did not miss the boo-boo of dropping my food or kicking anything over this time, either.

We hadn’t gone ‘straight’ to Woody’s BBQ place, but only partly by design… We had taken a long cut and ridden some rather nice two-laned roads not ridden in way more than a fortnight, more like a decade or so, actually, and the very light traffic we'd encountered had added to the pleasant cruise through the Ocala National Forest. Even the weather had cooperated providing us with near perfect conditions for… enjoying some much-needed ‘soul’ food…

The plate upon which BBQ and sides were served…

The platter upon which my idea of ‘soul food’ is served…

Once at the outskirts of Palatka, my suspicions and apprehensions were confirmed… I was not able to recall exactly where that place was! My rememberation was that we would need to make a left turn onto some major road at a traffic light… I went a bit too far to another less familiar intersection, but a U-turn was easily executed with much practiced precision. Once the proper turn was made, I spotted Woody’s on the corner of that very intersection, so I had been wrong again in thinking it was a couple of blocks further on… Oh well, there is much good in good fortune!!!

I did take in too much food… BBQ and fixins, that is… never too much soul food! I just knew a nap need would arise soon enough, so a lengthy return route was not undertaken… We did, however, ride mostly different roads, and the entire roundtrip had turned out to be just what was needed… you know, to satisfy serious hunger-pangs… even if only temporarily…

P.S. As I was writing this piece, it occurred to me that some might find the story of the ‘Cross-Florida Barge Canal’ interesting. We’d crossed that abandoned pipedream three or four times during this little excursion, so… Perhaps I need to do that ride again and fill in the ‘Rest Of The Story’… Might even visit Woody’s again, too… since we’d be in the hood anyway…

A "Soul Food" trip sounds pretty good about now. I've been thinking a lot about one recently. Emancipation day is very near for me. And my poor grandson has been a trooper in all this "shelter in place" stuff. He's been relegated between swimming at our house or playing Xbox at his house for a couple months now. I'm going to break him out of jail soon ! Thanks for the ride a long and the idea for a "Great Escape".

(I look forward to hearing about that canal story)  cooldude

I've been getting some "soul food" too, in the form of warmer (still windy) days, cheap gasoline and light traffic --unfortunately not in the form of BBQ.  Restaurants in our neck o' the woods are carry out only. Amazing that yesterday Ruby was running so sweetly as I headed toward Lake City I forgot all about all the crap our poor country is facing and as I came upon the twisties I fell into the groove.  Push.  Pull.  Lean, thread, lean. Zeetez truck tire on rails.

It's good to lose yourself in the moment!   cooldude

DDT,

I'd love to hear the story of the Cross Florida Barge Canal.  I use to live in Crystal River and crossed it many times during my time there.

I asked some co-workers (lifetime FL residents) about the canal but never got a real story.

The reason it sort of intrigued me was the notion of putting a waterway across the state sort of making it into two separate areas.

Glad you’re doing well Bruce.

I’m hoping things open up this summer, if not to the US, at least to Alberta and BC so I can get out there and tour as usual. As one who’s been fortunate to keep working through all this, and staying home and not spending anything, I plan on stimulating the heck out of the income of mom and pop motels and restaurants and their staff. The ones that survive this shut down will need the help.

I've lived in Florida since the mid-70's. I think the tree huggers killed it. Granted, it was quite the boondoggle and would have been rough on the environment.

Once this is over I’m looking forward to a nice pastrami on rye toast, coleslaw, garlic pickle and some fries.

Whether it's just on day rides or on longer rides to parts unknown, one of my favorite things about motorcycling is stopping at roadside cafes and coffee shops along the way and having the chance to meet and chat up some locals... whether riding solo, with the Mrs, or enjoy the comaraderie of riding partners. Have had many memorable encounters with complete strangers who offered up unique perspectives on life experiences and interesting tidbits of information on whatever town I was riding through, or  helped steer me in unplanned directions that turned out to be far better than routes I had been contemplating. Have had good, great, and terrible food and coffee... but all experiences add up to great memories on the road.
Things have started to open up here in BC, with some of my favorite local stops offering up limited in-house seating. Looking forward to adding that element back into my rides.
Good post Bruce, nice to see you out and about  and indulging in your favorite dietary pleasures.  cooldude

Beardo... our BC mom and pops will welcome some of that big SaskTel money for sure, and the msb hotel and bike garage  will  be open for business if you'll be pointing the front tire of that fancy Wing of yours West Smiley
