I have had my riding mower for about 15 years now and while making the
last pass before finishing there was a huge puff of smoke and a terrible
metal to metal sound.

I just got a refresher course on what it sounds like when a motor lets go.
I guess that will teach me not to fix what isn't broke.   I had just changed the oil
and put in fresh gas and this happens.
The way I am looking at this is my mower must have acquired a love for the old gas
and oil and just refused to run on anything but the old fluids.
Looks like this here grass will just have to keep growing without any trimming
from this old guy.

Yep you shoulda just left the old oil in her just check it from time to time and top it off if needed. Had a Honda push mower once that was bought at a yard sale. (Actually there were 2) gave a whole $25 for both Shocked the owner said neither ran and hadnt in a couple of years. Long story short I took the carb off of one and put on the other and with one pull of the rope she was running. Used it probably 10 years never changed the oil. Gave it to my brother and bought a new one (dont know why to this day Undecided) and he used it for a couple yrs and then gave it to his wifes sister as far as I know it is still running. On start up it would run the mosquitoes off for about 30 seconds then clear up and purr all day.

Shortleg have no idea how you feel bout Harbor Freight but they have a large small engine selection for way less then a new or good used mower. I purchased a Brute 22" cut self propelled with a Briggs and Stratton engine on it. Had it a bit more than 10 year now. Changed oil every season fresh gas with Marine Stabil and B 12 chem tool added and a new air filter every other season. Used it a week ago and it puffed a bit of blue smoke after being warmed up after my pauses. Now you got me worried!  2funny If it blows up anytime now I Did git my moneys worth out of it. And bein as the deck is still solid will look at the H/F replacement engine should the other one go thru the death rattle!  Lips Sealed Sides new lwan mowers be cursed expensive where ever ya look. RIDE SAFE.
