I did a SS1600K last year. Went from Surrey to Prince George and back a bit East. I had thunderstorms chasing me and it was a crazy ride to remember. I managed to get it done in 20.5 hours total time, 16.5 hours riding time, 4 hours standing time due to fuel stops and taking shelter. It was an amazing experience and I learnt again that people are amazing!!!! I was invited to put my bike in their garage and was invited for hot tea until the storms passed.

Last weekend I thought about doing another ride, this time a SS2000K. 2000km in 24 hours. I have the route and fuel stops planned out and hope it'll work. It's not the fastest route I picked, more of a scenic route. I just hope that due to this pandemic and campgrounds still being closed, that the roads are empty and I can get this done in time. I will leave from Surrey at 3:30am on Friday and see how it goes.

Wish me luck! And if someone is interested in getting the link to the live tracking, just send me your email to ckexploration@gmail.com.

Here are the planned fuel stops (I will carry a jerry can as well. Not sure I can go the 273km stint without filling up a bit):

1: Surrey
2: Hope          1h19min      126km   587 Old Hope Princeton Way, Hope, BC V0X 1L4
3: Osoyoos         2h48min      245km   9101 Main St, Osoyoos, BC V0H 1V2
4: Castlegar         2h42min      223km   1928 Columbia Ave, Castlegar, BC V1N 2W7
5 Cranbrook         2h40min      230km   702 Cranbrook St N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3R9
6: Lake Louise      3h2min         273km   100 Village Rd, Lake Louise, AB T0L 1E0
7: Jasper         2h59min      233km   701 Connaught Dr, Jasper, AB T0E 1E0
8: Blue River         2h18min      212km   778 BC-5, Blue River, BC V0E 1J0
9: Kamloops         2h27min      230km   1520 Hugh Allan Dr, Kamloops, BC V1S 1Y2
10: Hope         2h            203km   587 Old Hope Princeton Way, Hope, BC V0X 1L4
11: Surrey

Great ride with beautiful scenery. Safety first.  Coming home is always special.

Good luck, stay safe. Some of those roads are fantastic to ride, but for me, not when in a hurry.

I see you're missing the gas station between Banff and Jasper, it's a gas trap, gas was almost another $0.50/L when I went through 5 years (?) ago.

I would make yourself aware of inter-Provincial "non-essential" travel restriction recommendations in place at this time.

The Mrs and  I did that very same loop out of Maple Ridge about 6 years ago, albiet routing through Nelson from Castlegar then along the lake to Creston. We also spent some time exploring around both West and East sides of Wells Grey Park. It's a great run you've got planned for sure, and traffic through Banff and Jasper parks should'nt be an issue.

Thanks everyone!

I have thought about everything that could happen, including wildlife and unseen weather changes. I will probably see temperatures between 4 and 32 degrees on that trip. I might leave a bit later, closer to 4am, so I will have daylight coming up when I leave Hope.

@Avanti if your schedule works out, then I am happy ;-)

@GordonV I did my research on the gas stations and that was exactly the reason why I left this one out and put in the longer stint to Lake Louise.

@MSB I am aware of those restrictions. But I am really just stopping at 2 gas stations and will not visit anything or be close to people. Let's just mark it under "essential travel to keep me sane".

I love my long distance rides, just me and the bike and the scenery. For me this one is more of a challenge to myself, to see if I can hold up. I know the bike can ;-) My mind is set to "I can do this", but I also know that if there is anything changing and I start to feel off, I can stop at any time. I had a ride where I could barely keep my eyes open and I definitely don't want to ride like this again. If it all works out, I am happy. If not, I will know why and can refocus on another attempt.

The first stint to Hope will be a faster ride, after that I have to focus on riding a constant speed to save fuel and then I have to focus before every gas stop to follow my routine: fuel up, take pictures with the receipt next to the tach and GPS, washroom break (although I might do that roadside), drink, eat, stretch, push ups, back on the saddle. I have beef jerky and cereal bars with me and can drink and eat while riding. Nothing better than having small pieces of beef jerky from the Deroche General Store to snack on all the time ;-) When I arrive in Jasper I will have a feeling for where I am at and if it can be done. The last stretch going down South from Kamloops might be a faster one again to make up some time...

This is not a race for me. I see it as a challenge for body and mind. And because I am working all the time, this also counts a bit as vacation for me, hehe. But what counts the most is what @Avanti said: coming home safe to do it another time again!

I will write up a summary of the ride on Sunday or Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone!  cooldude

Looking forward to reading about your ride upon your safe return Christian. I agree... nothing better than long solo rides, as far as relaxation, anticipation and excitement, anxiousness, deep thought, mind-cleansing.... all the good stuff rolled into one.
Enjoy and ride safe cooldude

That looks like a great trip.  I wish you well.

Soon after I got my Valk in 2003 I seriously thought about doing a  SS1000 mile ride to earn my Iron Butt Badge.    I almost did it in 2006 coming home from Frisco, Colorado...made nearly 850 miles 15 hours.

I still like keeping tabs on the IB  Rally and some of the extreme rides  some do.

Now I'm  my butt hurts thinking about it.  But I can live it through you... keep us posted on how it goes.

I knew I should have asked for the link, I wasn't expecting to be hanging at home today, but now I am.

To late to ask Christine, maybe someone could forward the link to my email? Thank you in advance.  angel

I thought he was leaving Sat morning, not yesterday, seems I was wrong.

Did he get in on time, how did the run end? Rain locally most of today.

IT'S DONE!!!!!  cooldude

On Thursday night after work I packed everything I wanted to bring for the ride: beef jerky, cereal bars, drinks, some tools. I set my alarm to 3am, had a shower, got dressed, packed the bike and rode to the gas station. At the gas station I parked the bike at the pump, got off the bike and went through my list.

- set the GPS to zero on everything
- activate Spotwalla tracking on the phone
- send out the link for the live tracking
- fuel up
- take pictures of receipt with odometer
- GO!!!!!

The first receipt is from Friday morning 4:16am. Now the challenge has begun.

I hit the highway towards Hope for the next fuel stop and got the next receipt at 5:28am.

My initial plan was to leave Surrey around 3:30am. I decided to leave later so I would have daylight when I leave Hope. So far so good.

Stop #3 was in Osoyoos.

Stop #4 was in Castlegar.

Small cut beef jerky from the Deroche General Store are the perfect snack on a long ride like this ;-)

Leaving Castlegar I came up to the first construction area and had to wait for almost 10 minutes. It feels like forever though when you're on a tight schedule and you're baking under your motorcycle gear.

Next stop was #5 in Cranbrook

Leaving Cranbrook...

On the whole ride I counted more than 20 bears...

Stop #6 in Lake Louise

Leaving Lake Louise and riding the Icefield Park Highway...

Bow Lake

Athabasca Glacier

The bear sightings now were after almost every corner. Shortly after the pic stop at the glacier I had a massive truck closing up on me, then overtaking me, and I kept following him until Jasper. After he realized I am sticking with him for safety reasons, he warned me about every bear and blocked me off. After 2 close encounters that was exactly what I was hoping for. I gave him the thumbs up and thanked him in Jasper. He took off and I had to fuel up again.

Stop #7 in Jasper.

Jasper was very windy and grey, it gave me a weird feeling for some reason. I left Jasper at almost 8pm and there was deer everywhere. I got lucky again and rode up to a group of 4 big industrial trucks and decided to ride sandwich. I had one truck in front of me and 3 behind me. Once he realized why I was staying behind him, he was going at a good speed and I stayed with them almost all the way to Blue River.

Shortly before Blue River we got stopped due to a massive accident between an industrial truck and a passenger car. I had a little stretch and had a good chat with the truck driver I was following.

Stop #8, Blue River

After I fuelled up I had a chat with some truckers and they said I am crazy for riding that road at night. They warned me of all the wildlife. I told them I had no other choice right now and that I will do my best to stay safe. I jumped on the bike and decided to wait next to the road until the next vehicle came by, then just follow them. And what happened? Nothing! Not one car, nobody. After standing there for almost 15minutes I decided to ride by myself. I had my high beams on and decided to ride in the middle of the road, so if anything comes out of the bushes I have room to the left or right. At one point I had a car coming towards me and I changed to low beams. Exactly in that moment, while changing from high beams to low beams, I saw something moving on the right side of the road. I immediately switched back to high beams, pulled over to the left, and the bear just in time stopped, made a push with his front paws and turned back 180 degrees on his hind legs towards the bushes. It reminded me of trained circus horses standing on their hind legs. That shook me up and I was totally awake and scared at the same time. I now knew that this might be a neck breaker for my ride. I had to get to Kamloops safe and also hold my average speed above 85kph to make the 2000km in time. I was riding at 70kph, scanning left and right, and hoping to see some headlights in my mirrors. Nothing! It almost took 45mins until finally a car came up that I could then follow. This was definitely the scariest and slowest part of the ride.

Stop #9 in Kamloops

I still managed to arrive in Kamloops with an average speed of 87kph, so I knew I was still in time.

I was a bit shaken up and took a longer break in Kamloops. Drink, snack, vape, ride on.

I had a strong finish on the Coquihalla last year and I wanted to do the same again this time.
I turned the high beams on and let her run...

Stop #10 in Hope again

I had 1970km total so I decided to just ride to Chilliwack, fuel up there and then call it done.

Stop #11 Chilliwack

I did it! It took me a couple of minutes to realize what just happened and then I had friends calling in. They were watching the live tracking and following it like we normally follow the 24hrs race at the Nordschleife in Germany. I was overwhelmed with emotions, happy to have arrived safely. It was a crazy adventure.

I took a rest in Chilliwack before I rode the last couple kms back home, then I took some pics of the bike...

And then it was time for a cold refreshment  Wink

I want to thank all of you for the motivation and well wishes!!!

That ride went by so fast and I can't believe how well I felt all the time. Nothing hurt. I don't have a cruise control and normally I start to feel my wrist, not this time. This time was also the first time that I rode with a Cardo and could listen to music. I think that made a big difference as well.

I planned the ride well and focused on everything for a week. I talked myself into what needs to be accomplished and I think my body and mind were well prepared. I yawned 3 times during the whole ride, that's it. I was focused and felt well all the time.

And of course the most important thing on a ride like this is to have a reliable motorcycle! Valerie did well and not once did I have any concerns that she wouldn't hold up.

Here are the total numbers for the ride:

Time to plan the next adventure...

Well done Christian.     cooldude cooldude   Critters at night are my least favorite things. I always try to follow something bigger than me and with trucks if you stay back a little you can see under the truck and his headlights on the road.
