Assembly Bill 596, is scheduled for a committee hearing Thursday at noon. Twenty legislators are sponsors of the bill that would require the Wisconsin Blue Book to list Harley-Davidson as the state's honorary bike.

But they are gettin' some flack from 'Noise Free America'

This from todays business section in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal...(http://www.jsonline.com/business/79369242.html )

We should all support this move.  Anything to reinforce the correlation between Harley Davidson = Motorcycle to the general public is a good thing! Why? Because as long as the vast majority of Harley owners keep the exhausts loud loud loud then the normal civillian will go on believing that motorcycles are loud.  So then if we have nice sounding pipes that are louder than stock but not irritating like many Harleys, well then the general public will think our bikes are quiet and we wont be bothered.

As soon as people find out that there are VERY QUIET motorcycles, and that Harleys can be VERY QUIET as well.....we will all have to sound like sewing machines

A Harley guy will say “load pipes saves lives” in my opinion; they just annoy the crap out of the neighbors when you leave for work at 6 am.

Why is it that whenever you come to a traffic light, they always seem to have to rev their engines?  Are they that poorly tuned that if they idle they’ll die?

It’s not that they need load exhausts to be seen, it’s that they need the noise to make up for what they lack in horse power.

Chris - I used to think like you - that the HD guys setting the bar so high - or low if you prefer - was a good thing for us.

Then Denver enacted a law saying ANY aftermarket exhaust is illegal, regardless of sound.  Any cop can look at your pipes - if it doesn't say e.g. "Honda" on them with the EPA dB blurb, you get a $500 ticket.

I haven't heard of anyone testing this law yet - it's fairly recent.  I'm hoping it will be shot down under the 14th Amendment when it's tested.

Then there's the Parking Garages who outlaw ALL motorcycles thanks to the guys with pipes who like to cruise through and set off the alarms.  Even my Gold Wing.

Then there's the HOA's who won't let you have ANY bike if you live there, and any visitors have to park outside and walk or taxi in.

I make and sell modified exhausts.  One of my best sales features is the ability to set the sound the way you want it.  I invented the "silencers" you may have heard about on this board - the rear baffle section modified to fit back into a set of stacks.  And my Trombones are patented - plug - in loudness, but you can make em quiet just as fast.

Let the lawmakers run amuck - if you're in the minority, and you don't squawk, blink and they will legislate all your rights away.  Join the AMA.  And participate in the process - write your congressmen.

Ya, Mark.....I heard about that stupid law in Denver.  Last I heard the AMA was fighting it.  I dont see how they can inforce the OEM or bust law when virtually every car on the road can have whatever exhausts they strap on loud or not.  And also what about the older bikes that the exhausts rusted out and OEM is no longer availaable......They would have to apply it to cars as well as bikes for it to be constitutional in my book.  It wont stand!  I did, however buy a like new (unmolsted) set of OEM pipes just in case the dreaded day ever comes just in case  Cry

I believe this to be a myth. Kinda like 'loud wives loose lives' saying. lol I've heard loud pipes on all bikes and all bikers rev at lights. Even Valks. Do I believe that being 'heard' helps in safety? Yes. They put big horns on trains for some reason!  uglystupid2 I like loud pipes. Do I have loud pipes? Not really, but they are modified louder then your basic mods. I even been told/yelled at, that stock Valks are to loud by a elderly gent at the B/G ride.  tickedoff Besides, how can you have a loud pipe contest with stock pipes!  2funny

I still remember riding my father's new Honda, back in the 60's.  It was in California.

He had the original mufflers taken off and installed Harley Davidson fishtail mufflers.

I was parked along the boardwalk in Santa Cruz and a HD motor cop stopped to talk.  After looking the bike over he gave me a ticket for a 'modified exhaust'.  The exact same mufflers that were on his HD.

Just something wrong with that form of law writing.
