Congrats, you're over the toughest part, now it's the "SURPRISE!" cravings that you gotta watch out for...

Right about 13 years now for me...

Congratulations  cooldude

The first time I seriously quit was March 21, 2009. That lasted over a year.

My last cigarette was January 1, 2017.

Sometimes you have to quit more than once. Relapse does NOT equal failure.

Keep up the fight and hang in there.

I quit one morning on my way to work. At the time I was a field tech for Xerox in the Chicago area and my assigned territory was Argonne Nat'l. Laboratory southwest of Chicago. It's like a small city unto itself. There were some locations on site where I couldn't smoke and that happened to be my first stop this one morning. On the way out there from home I reached for a cigarette and noticed it was already near 9:00am and this was my first one of the day. I hadn't had a butt for most of the 3 previous days cuz I was training a newbie and trying to overhaul some of the machines installed at Argonne. The newbie kept me busy, the overhauls were taking too long, and I was getting frustrated. I kept sending him for coffee, had him bring back a sandwich when he went to lunch while I continued to work. Anything to get him out of my hair. For 3 nights in a row at about 10:00pm I was sitting on the bed and suddenly realized I hadn't had a smoke all day cuz I was staying busy and here I was about to lay down to sleep...so why start now. That last morning when I finally reached for a cigarette, I had the pack in my hand...looked at it then rolled down the window and tossed them along with an unopened pack on the seat. For good measure I tossed out my 509th Bomb Wing lighter I got as a reward. That was early 1965 and I never looked back or have ever unconciously reached for one. Pall Mall was my brand and in the BX you could get a carton for $1.90, not so on the outside. Frankly, I was happy to lighten my load....as was my wife. She said I didn't stink anymore, an aura all smokers have about them whether they think so or not.

One lady I used to work with some years back was a beautiful thing to behold as she walked down the hall toward you. Sexy voice and appearance to match. But as she walked past....whew....the tobacco odor was so strong it cooled your thoughts of how attractive she was. Some time later after my divorce, she found out about it so called me for a little "get together" after work. When I turned her down, she questioned me as to why....so I told her. She called a month later saying she hadn't had a smoke in over a month and would I reconsider....which I did. It was true, she no longer smelled of stale tobacco, smelled as lovely as she looked. Over the next couple years we had some good times together....until I found out she was actually 20 yrs. younger than I and engaged. Can you say "hot potato"....as in dropped. Was good for the ego while it lasted.  Wink

You can do it  cooldude It was Oct 1997 for me. May sound weird but I switched to a brand that I didn't like for about a month to help me cut way back before I stopped altogether. uglystupid2

Good work - keep it up.  Just remember if you have a smoke then the discomfort you have suffered up til now was for naught.  It's an investment.  I quit 5/20/92.  One of the best things I ever did.  Another thing - if the craving nags at you, if you have the strength to ignore it, it will go away in a minute or 2.  Also - if you fire up - you are disrespecting yourself and your will.  When I quit I kept a carton of smokes handy as I didn't want the reason I wasn't smoking was because of not having any. That's easy to fix.  Not so easy to disrespect my will and determination.  I finally threw them away years later.  They must have been the height of stale. The nicotine craving is easy to get over - only takes a couple weeks or so.  It's the rewards thing, the mental addiction that takes a while to break.  Substitute something else.  Like sunflower seeds, or gum.  Your taste, and ability to smell will get better and better over time.  Even munching coochie.  Your lungs will feel better and better.  No longer feel like there's a weight on your chest.  My lungs are now as clean as a never-smoker.  Lastly - my ex, and all of her siblings who smoked - six of them - all are dead from smoking.  And the three who didn't - are still with us.

This is the ex - lung cancer killed her.  Younger than me.  She was a looker back in the day - and smoked to the end - with a butt in her mouth and oxygen cannula in her nose.
