I don't think he should have been shot either, its just that I don't know what the cop saw or knew or had time to react to.  Not knowing that with any certainty makes it hard to say what he should have done.  In retrospect, I'm sure they wish they would have just let the guy go, although, they probably would have lost their jobs for that (dereliction of duty) especially if he harmed someone else after the fact.

You can what if this all you want.  Would it have been justified if he had been shot while facing the cop rather than in the back?

IMHO, NONE OF THIS, absolutely nothing would have happened if the deadman would have complied with commands and allowed himself to be taken into custody.  This allowing suspects to flee with no consequesnces is the problem.  If you flee/resist arrest, it is all on you at that point.

+1  !!!!!!!!

If they arrested you by mistake - at least you're still alive to complain about it.

At the time this occurred, did the officer know for a fact that it was a taser?

-RP

He knew a weapon was being pointed at him.  Point a weapon at a cop, you can expect to get shot.
Since there was no investigation before he got fired, we don't know for sure what he knew.
I predict the shooting will be found justifiable; the cop will sue the city and win.

I wouldn't be a cop today for $1,000,000 a year salary...

Quote
At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Fulton County D.A. Paul Howard announced that former Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe will be charged with 11 charges, including felony murder and multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Officer Brosnan has been charged three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of violating his oath of office.

If convicted, Rolfe could be sentenced to life in prison without parole or the death penalty. Brosnan is now cooperating with the District Attorney's Office as a witness, Howard said. Howard recommended that Rolfe be held with no bond.

It gets worse. The GBI said they hadn't completed their investigation of the shooting yet, nor were they consulted by the DA before charges were filled.

Hesitate to shoot an attacker in the back because that is 100% murder.

Boom. You're dead.

CNN has erected a barrier around its Atlanta HQ.

Hypocrites DO need a barrier after all.

Also from the Wall Street Journal:

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard Jr. brought the charges in a hurry, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is also investigating the shooting, tweeted that it was “not consulted.” Mr. Howard, who is fighting for re-election, said at a press conference that for most of the encounter Brooks “never presented himself as a threat,” though he ended up physically assaulting and firing a taser at a police officer.

Mr. Howard brought aggravated assault charges against Atlanta officers two weeks ago for their use of tasers against college students amid George Floyd protests. In that press conference, Mr. Howard said “under Georgia law, a taser is considered as a deadly weapon.”

This doesn't really address whether or not Officer Rolfe should have fired
his gun, it just shows a little about the mindset of the government's
prosecutor, Mr. Howard...
