Looking to replace and relocate the tach with something smaller that's more out of sight. Digital tach's are an option as well. Any examples or experiences with non-stock units that are not too difficult to hook up / make work?

Don’t get rid of the original tach. Most buyers will want the original setup.

I had a small Autometer shift light that had a digital RPM display in the center on my Vmax, it worked well and was about the size of a silver dollar. Took a standard tach signal input and pulse-per-rev was adjustable to work with any engine. On that bike I had it clamped to the single speedo on the handlebar, since it's factory tach was the size of a quarter and down on the "tank", well out of your line of sight, and it didn't have a rev limiter, and accidentally over-revving could easily spit out a crank bearing.

Koso has a wide range of digital universal gauges, Motogadget has some slick ones too but they're pretty spendy.

The tach is mechanical isn't it? So I would start there.

Unless it would be as simple as hooking a lead on a coil and adding a digital meter to your bike.

I don't know why you would want to do this on a big cruiser but they do make digital displays that will replace your analog gauges and can give you exact info.

Something like this. https://www.wish.com/product/5e5614c01941133fd052014b?hide_login_modal=true&from_ad=goog_shopping&_display_country_code=US&_force_currency_code=USD&pid=googleadwords_int&c=%7BcampaignId%7D&ad_cid=5e5614c01941133fd052014b&ad_cc=US&ad_lang=EN&ad_curr=USD&ad_price=54.99&campaign_id=7203534630&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh5HXl8SK6gIVip-zCh2MiwTKEAQYASABEgLa_PD_BwE&share=web

This is just a Google search they do make better setups.

I replaced both my speedo and tach with a Koso unit. See http://rebuild.turnspain.com/?p=417

This is the one I used https://kosonorthamerica.com/product/db-01r-speedometer-e-mark-approval/ it cost a lot less than this when I bought it. The tacho connection just goes to a coil and they make a digital converter for the speed that just attached to the cable. It works well but like everyone has said I have kept the originals for when I sell the Valk when I am too old to ride any more.

I found this one that I like and the size is just right ... but will it work...? It is for dual-fire ignitions but the "application" only lists Harleys...

I doubt it as it will be designed for 2 cylinders rather than our 6 cylinders.

Thanks for the suggestion. Dakota Digital also has a couple options but I think I will go with the Koso DL-01R.      cooldude

The tach is electric not mechanical, there is no tach cable like there is for the speedometer

Yes, I was thinking of the speedometer cable on the std/T, rather than the electrical one on the IS.
