I never really stopped in Squamish, I was always just riding through....
Last Friday I had the chance to sneak out of work early and just in time it cleared up a bit. So I decided to go for a little ride to Squamish and explore a bit. Good times... ;-)

I can highly recommend the Watershed Grill for a visit. The patio is right next to the river, great service and great food as well.

I love those deep hanging clouds

Valerie, Inukshuk, Shannon Falls

The Stawamus Chief in the background

Can it get any better?

And they have extra motorcycle parking as well at the Watershed Grill

Valerie will get a nice wash tomorrow and then we're off to another Iron Butt Ride this Friday. It's Summer Solstice this Saturday and the IBA has special certificates if you ride on all 4 events. 2 solstices and 2 equinoxes, you don't have to do them all in the same year. But you gotta start somewhere ;-)
Leaving early Friday morning riding to Creston (I saw a nice Fish'n Chips place there on my last ride), then to Nakusp, Needles Ferry, Vernon, Kamloops and back home to Surrey. I just have to make sure I will finish my ride after midnight, early Saturday to get the Summer Solstice Certificate. I decided to start on Friday instead of Saturday due to the weather forecast, Saturday is gonna be wet everywhere. Wish me luck ;-)

And if anyone would like to follow the Live Tracking, send me an email to ckexploration@gmail.com

Those are some good roads you've picked.  Hope you have a good ride.

I will be a couple of hours behind you on Friday. A group of us are travelling to Princeton from Victoria  to meet a friend then home again.

You guys have a safe ride and a good time!!!

Castlegar to Kamloops is all new to me, it will be fun for sure. Never been on the Needles Ferry either.
As long as I get my last DBR after midnight it's all good  cooldude

Highway 6 from Nakusp all the way to Lumby is my favorite road in BC....now that's saying something!!! Especially the run from the Needles ferry to Lumby....get ready for a fantastic stretch of hills, curves, and scenery that you can do at high speed, or a bit more leisurely if you have time to spare  to soak it all in. I hope you're not doing it at dusk or night though....deer, moose, and bear abound Shocked  Also, from Castlegar to Nakusp is great too, and there should be little traffic. Stunning lake and other views through Valhalla Park.
Enjoy Christian....just make sure you make it home safe cooldude

Those are all great riding roads, I just don't know the speed and the night time safety on those routes! But all the power too you.

@MSB That's what I like to hear, Mike! I'm really looking forward to another long ride and now I am even more excited, hearing that the roads will be awesome!

The planned schedule is as follows:

I should make it to Kamloops before darkness and from there it's the Coquihalla again. The Coquihalla feels kinda safe at night.

On the last ride I passed by Tim's Fish'n Chips in Creston and that's where I want to have lunch this time. I planned an hour there, but it will hopefully be less than that.

I did my first SS1600K last year in 20.5 hours and had more than 4 hours of standing time due to thunderstorms. As long as I finish shortly after midnight it's all good and I can get a certificate for the Summer Solstice ride event (it's the summer solstice on Saturday). I wanted to ride on Saturday but the weather forecast made me rethink.

Here's some more info on this Iron Butt Ride if anybody is interested http://www.ironbutt.com/themerides/fourseasons/index.html

@Gordon I added you to the list and the link will be sent before I leave tomorrow morning.

Sounds good Christian cooldude I forgot to mention that the back route from Vernon to Kamloops is also a great riding road. Close to Enderby, there's this neat photo op Smiley

Also, if it's open the Gold Panner Cafe just outside of Cherryville is an awesome place to stop...but then you'll already have made your lunch stop for the day in Creston (my least favorite town in the Kootenays Wink) You're right about the Coquihalla being the safest of all those roads to ride at night, in terms of critters. Enjoy!

I've been following Christian most of the day since waking up. He just got off the Needle's ferry, and on his way towards Lumby/Vernon/Kamloops. 600+ miles done.

It seems to take 2-5 min to update his location. Not as fast as I thought if it's live tracking. I also suspect it's using cell data, which I don't have when I travel outside of the LMM.

7:50 Vernon
9:00 pulling into Kamloops. running 45 min ahead, and had started 40 min behind

Home, safe I'm suspecting.  cooldude

The Summer Solstice Ride 2020 is done and sent out for certification!  cooldude

I was restless on Thursday night and had to check everything again and again. Did I pack this? Do I have this? Is the route saved correctly on the GPS? I went to bed later than expected and needed a bit more sleep, that's why I left Surrey at 4:45am instead of 4am.

Same procedure again at the gas station before feeling up: turn on Spotwalla, send out the link for live tracking. Then feeling up, label the receipt, pack it all up and GO!!!!

For rides like this I have my clear visor on the helmet and I immediately put on my sunglasses at 4:45am.
Between Abbotsford and Chilliwack I got greeted by the sun

Quick stops in Hope, Osoyoos and Castlegar. Shortly after Castlegar there is construction and they are renewing the road. I had 4 cars in front of me, turned the engine off and listened to good music. After about a minute the flagger came over and asked me to pull ahead of everyone. They want motorcycles to be the first to follow the leader car, so we don't have to ride in all the dust. I pulled to the front and we were chatting for about 15mins before finally the leader car showed up and we could move again.

The next stop was Creston. I rode by there 2 weeks ago and wanted to check out that little fish'n chips place I saw there.

It's called "Tim's Fish'n Chips". A very small but super busy place. I ordered 1 piece Halibut and chips, the cost was CAD19.95. A bit much, but it was well worth it. Tim is a super funny guy and always entertains his customers. I was eating inside (it was nice and cool in there) and I had to giggle many times because of him interacting with customers. Very entertaining!

Going back the same way to Castlegar I had to go through the construction site again. This time I pulled right to the front and we were rolling again in less than 5 minutes.

It doesn't look like much in this pic, but when the cars and semi trucks passed by you couldn't see further than 20m due to all the dust.

Fuel stop in Castlegar again and then going North on HWY3a and then turning on HWY6.
That's where I was getting excited because @MSB Mike said it's his favourite road in BC. And oh boy is he right!!!! The area is beautiful and the road is fantastic!

Shortly after Slocan Park I had a car with a trailer in front of me. They were about 300m in front of me but I could tell immediately that there was a Valkyrie on the trailer behind the car. I followed for a bit, checked out the bike and then rode by and gave the driver a big thumbs up.

I now understand why Mike likes this road so much. You don't need your brakes, you just ride along, swing left and right and use the gears to slow you down. This road can be ridden so smooth and my smile got bigger and bigger with every corner. It felt like the perfect harmony between rider, bike and road! Beautiful big patches of fireweed growing along the road and then Slocan Lake comes into sight.
I made a quick stop at Silverton to take some pics and kept going...

I brought the jerry can again this time because Google Maps said that all the gas stations around Nakusp were closed permanently. I rode by an open gas station in Nakusp and fuelled up there before hitting the Needles ferry. The ferry crossing takes 5mins and is leaving every 30mins, and it is free to use.

The road just kept on being amazing and it was pure joy to ride there!!!!

In Vernon it changes over to HWY97 and all of the surface is brand new. It's a nice road and the little towns are beautiful along the route. My goal was to get to Kamloops before it gets dark. The GPS said sunset at 21:10 and I arrived in Kamloops at 21:10. Quick fuel stop and some messages and then I had to leave, the mosquitos were eating me alive. On both my hands I have more than 20 mosquito bites!
I made another stop in Merritt. I had to clean my visor, all I got was a glare from all the cars coming towards me, I barely could see the road. I also needed a Red Bull and a little longer break and had to refocus. I knew that I would get rained on soon and had to tell myself to slow down, be safe and bring us home safely. I had enough time and would finish within the 24hrs anyway.

The last receipt of the trip was printed at 1:43am. My odometer says the trip was 1605km, the GPS says 1615km., Google Maps says 1610km. And apparently Google Mpas is what is used for certification.

Another long distance ride in the books and I can't wait for the next one!  cooldude

Thanks for following @Gordon! The main reason why I want people to follow is safety for me. If I land in the ditch, I need people to start some action and call 911 with my last location. You never know what can happen.
Apparently the live tracking uses around 2MB per hour, that's not too bad.

Thanks for another great ride report! Congratulations on completing another Iron Butt. Like Mike, I too think that hwy 6 is the best bike road in BC and I'm happy to hear you got to enjoy it. Glad your home safe and looking forward to hearing about your next ride.
cheers,

Well done Christian.   cooldude  Thanks for posting and the pictures. Thinking of all those miles in one day makes my butt sore LOL

Our little trip to Princeton on Friday had good weather and good roads and cleared the head a little bit.

Thanks guys!

And I think I know why it's called an Iron Butt now. It's not because you NEED an Iron Butt, it's because you GET one!

If my butt starts hurting I keep squeezing my butt cheeks. Squeeze and loosen, squeeze and loosen, and keep going. It's like a workout! My partner approves of the improvement and wants me to go on another ride again asap  Grin Grin Grin

Congratulations on a safely completed ride. It looked good, and you did it on time in the end. I was surprised by the average speed, but it not how fast you ride, bu how short your stops are.

Fuel stop in Castlegar again and then going North on HWY3a and then turning on HWY6.

If you liked that one, then you'll love the ride up 3A to Nelson and beyond 31 to Kaslo, and just LOVE the ride along 31A towards New Denver. This is where a moose lifted it's rear leg and christened a Honda Fury (I think it was, and a passed group rider who's name eludes me right now, from Soap Lake WA), that stopped in time before hitting it in the middle of the road.

Thanks for following @Gordon! The main reason why I want people to follow is safety for me. If I land in the ditch, I need people to start some action and call 911 with my last location. You never know what can happen.

I thought of that, and was hoping you had a first person to keep an eye on you in case you stopped moving. I was looking for that, but I also saw a few spots where there was no tracking. But I was thinking about that, maybe call the local cops, to look for a MC broken down on the side of the road first.

@Gordon I had my 3 main people that I talked to about that, all good. Maybe the other roads will be in the next ride, hehe ;-)

@Madmike well, then I'd say he still has a little Goldmine with his little restaurant in Creston. Food was ok, entertainment and location are awesome!

I made a little Relive video again, you can watch it here if interested: https://www.relive.cc/view/v8qV124or36

Congrats Christian, good you made it home safe. I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for a piece of halibut,  but as you say it wasn't just the food that was the attraction Smiley  Your description of your first experience on Hwy 6 is bang on....just twist the throttle and ride...and grin  Grin

Just keep it in mind that the section between Kaslo and New Denver is slow speed cornering. Unless you're Redline, but he's been back-and-forth on that road many times.

I've ridden that particular stretch of road both directions for decades... I'll bet at the very least 50 times (I'm a West  Kootenay boy and go back often). It's always been dangerous in terms of wildlife or loose rock that can pop up in blind corners from either side of the road, but ever since it started to get publicized as one of "Canada's Best Motorcycle Roads", it's become more dangerous due to all the riders that see the writeups and mark it on their "bucket list" of roads to ride and prove how fast they can ride it. It would be a real fun road to ride at speed if it were not for the many riders who exceed their ability challenging it (the same can be said about any particular stretch or road made "famous" as a top motorcycle road anywhere (Tail of the Dragon in the US for instance) . I'll take my chances with wildlife, but I don't like to take my chances with other riders if I don't have to. Lisa and I road that stretch back and forth last year... the first day we came across 3 MC wrecks, the second time through we came across 2 more plus a Beemer auto in the ditch with police tape around it.
Great road, best region of BC, bar none, but I always encourage friends of mine to not use his particular stretch or road to test your high speed cornering skills.

Take your time and stop for a bit of fishing in Kaslo Creek about a third of the way through Smiley

Hey Christian, I have thought about doing an Iron Butt ride. I would love to do one with you. Perhaps meet you in Hope for one. I thought about trying to meet up with you, but I had committments that weekend. I am glad you are safe and had a good ride.
