Take a little trip to Valley Forge in January. Hold a musket ball in your Fingers and imagine it piercing your flesh and breaking a bone or two.
There won't be a doctor or trainer to assist you until after the battle, so Just wait your turn. Take your cleats and socks off to get a real Experience.
Then, take a knee on the beach in Normandy where man after American man Stormed the beach, even as the one in front of him was shot to pieces, the Very sea stained with American blood. The only blockers most had were the
Dead bodies in front of them, riddled with bullets from enemy fire.
Take a knee in the sweat soaked jungles of Vietnam. From Khe Sanh to Saigon, anywhere will do. Americans died in all those jungles. There was no Playbook that told them what was next, but they knew what flag they Represented. When they came home, they were protested as well, and spit on
For reasons only cowards know.
Take another knee in the blood drenched sands of Fallujah in 110 degree Heat. Wear your Kevlar helmet and battle dress. Your number won't be Printed on it unless your number is up! You'll need to stay hydrated but There won't be anyone to squirt Gatorade into your mouth. You're on your Own.
There are a lot of places to take a knee where Americans have given their Lives all over the world. When you use the banner under which they fought As a source for your displeasure, you dishonor the memories of those who
Bled for the very freedoms you have. That's what the red stripes mean. It Represents the blood of those who spilled a sea of it defending your Liberty.
While you're on your knee, pray for those that came before you, not on a Manicured lawn striped and printed with numbers to announce every inch of Ground taken, but on nameless hills and bloodied beaches and sweltering
Forests and bitter cold mountains, every inch marked by an American life Lost serving that flag you protest.
No cheerleaders, no announcers, no coaches, no fans, just American men and Women, delivering the real fight against those who chose to harm us, Blazing a path so you would have the right to "take a knee." You haven't Any inkling of what it took to get you where you are, but your "protest" is
Duly noted. Not only is it disgraceful to a nation of real heroes, it Serves the purpose of pointing to your ingratitude for those who chose to Defend you under that banner that will still wave long after your jersey is Retired.
If you really feel the need to take a knee, come with me to church on Sunday and we'll both kneel before Almighty God. We'll thank Him for Preserving this country for as long as He has. We'll beg forgiveness for our Ingratitude for all He has provided us. We'll appeal to Him for Understanding and wisdom. We'll pray for liberty and justice for all,
Because He is the one who provides those things. But there will be no Protest. There will only be gratitude for His provision and a plea for His Continued grace and mercy on the land of the free and the home of the Brave.

I wouldn't say big. Voted for him though. Serk, I consider you one of the smartest guys on here. But I consider anybody smarter than me smart. So, there are plenty of smart people here. Surely you can distinguish the difference between a dude taking crystal meth, pissing and shitting his pants so that he can escape enlistment versus a dude weaseling for student deferments and trying to get in the Guard to escape Vietnam ? He enlisted in the Selective Service and was drawn as 300 and something. Good for him. Lots of guys didn't want to go. There are couple ways of getting out. I wouldn't choose the first.

Rob how do you determine who is smarter than you?
in the general public it's got to be 98.6% of the population. Here, it's probably 93.2%. So, I don't really think about it, I just figure near everyone is.

Surely you can distinguish the difference between a dude taking crystal meth, pissing and shitting his pants so that he can escape enlistment versus a dude weaseling for student deferments and trying to get in the Guard to escape Vietnam ?

They both utilized the avenues of escape that were available to them. I'm sure if Mr. Nugent had the connections to to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship he would have used that method to avoid service instead of doing what he did.

He didn't have those connections, so he did what he could.

I'm also pretty confident given his moral fortitude President Clinton would have utilized Mr. Nugent's methods in a heartbeat if that was his only option to escape service.

BTW, while I accept the compliment, I fear your estimation of my intelligence is greatly overrated. I just know how to google things and tend to be a wee bit sesquipedalian.

Rob, as far as sweaty teddy and many others the decisions were maybe youth decisions. I can honestly say that I might not admit to or tell of all the extremely stupid things and decisions I made when I was young but there were so many I probably forgot a few.  I feel it was well written and should not be passed up.  Actually I might tell a few of my stupid stories.    uglystupid2   Also I was never faced with a draft.

Far be it for me to insinuate that I was immune to mistakes in my youth. I've made plenty. (Hell, I'm still quite capable) My biggest issue is, he has NO standing to be talking of patriotism or judging other's patriotism. I also escaped the draft. No one knows for sure what they would have done in such circumstances. But I have a good idea. As a young boy and teenager I was VERY proud of my Uncle Elward. He was 11 years older than me and enlisted in the Marines. Sadly, he passed a month ago from pancreatic cancer. He was wounded in Vietnam Nam. A flare gun exploded in his hand. He loved the Marines to his dying day.

I don't know what Ted Nugent did, I wasn't there. Anti-war run-off-to-Canada sentiments
ran thick with a lot of our 60s/70s musical "heros" though... I recently (in the last few years)
became aware of the first album from Stephen Stills/Manassas... google
"stephen stills live tv manassas" if you want to see a great youtube of them
playing most of the songs live... but don't listen hard to the words... I was a
couple of years too young to get drafted... looking back it is hard for me to
imagine that skinny little boy being much of a soldier... I respect the police and
the military and hope I am "patriotic" now, though...

I sincerely respect the point of view of each respondent, and I can see logic and well-reasoned thought behind each. I also appreciate the various points of view being expressed, as this is, I think, a timely and important topic for discussion, given all that is happening today.

As for this observer, it wouldn't matter if Benedict Arnold himself had uttered those words, his track record would not diminish my agreement with the sentiment or cause me to dismiss it out-of-hand. The source is of little importance, IMO, the message itself is the real substance...

I will have to admit to a mea culpa. After initially reading the post and getting to the author's signature, I will have to admit to dismissing it out of hand. Doesn't mean I don't agree with it, probably means I'm more judgemental than I should be.

I always feel conflicted when I have had a part into dragging you into a political discussion here. On one hand I feel sullied for doing it, but I also feel grateful for your balanced wisdom.

Rob,

I appreciate those remarks! An example of one of the many reasons I respect you and... While we don't always agree on the merits or meanings of details of an issue, I can count on your sincerity and objectivity in the end. Reasonable people can be reasoned with. They don't have to agree necessarily for many, many reasons, but folks genuinely seeking solutions as opposed to merely scoring debating points can accomplish great things! I appreciate ya, my friend!
