6.5 Creedmoor... It's the currently very popular hip caliber all the cool kids are shooting.....

I might be a bit old fuddy duddy, but I still prefer .308 just for availability and ease of acquisition in any social situations.....

For what purpose? Plinking, target, hunting, varment, etc? Cheap, surplus ammo, or ?

I've been thinking of a cheap surplus SKS and a 1500 box of ammo for the Zombie apocalypse.

The DNR has been thinking of making mn rifle statewide for deer. The shotguns are good out to maybe 150yds. Where i hunt am looking at maybe 250 300 yds max, under 100. more often  Already have a supply as the wife has a .243. If I go west I have other equipment for that. Otherwise plinking, target and varmint. actually I have taken more deer behind the shop with a bow, or now I as get older a crossbow. But sometimes it feels good to burn some powder.

Kinda sounds as if you have your answer. The .243 is a good, plentiful and popular cartridge.

What scope did you get?  That might be relevant to the caliber/rifle decision.

Leupold vx-3i 4.4-14x40 1inch tube. still in box. one of the few things i've bought on a whim.
Now I "need" to buy a tool to make use of it. I tend to overthink things when I spend any kind of
money, except for, or especially for the valk, ...see? The wife has a tikka and she, we love it. But I should get
one of my own.

Since I can't make inzane might as well spend it on something useful.
Hope everybody has a safe and great time.

The Leupold VX series of scopes is outstanding.  I have one too.    cooldude

When choosing firearms and optics, I first try to think of a particular need or use, then fill it.  Especially rifles.

You probably know this, but it's worth your time choosing a rifle, to consider the scope's eye relief for you, and then how it will mount to your proposed rifle to obtain that relief (and cheek weld).

It's a PITA to get a scope and rifle, and then discover you can't make the scope mount the way you hope it will without buying more (expensive) parts like a rail, or extra drilling and tapping.

I bought a very nice CZ 455 .22 bolt rifle a while back that came with a decent (but inexpensive) big variable scope, and I have tried repeatedly to make that scope work for me with no luck, even though the guy had already added a rail.  The scope sucks, and is a heavy brick, and is getting replaced.

My sister is coming up to visit from tappahannock va tomorrow.  We are running down to the cities (mpls, st paul) next week so I can check things out. Cabelas and sportsman warehouse should have something left on the shelf to at least "try on"
also need a set of tru glo tritium for another project. The stores around alexandria are pretty bare. Would like to buy local but not much to pick from.

Tru Glo sells TFO (tritium plus fiber optic) sights that are really great.

More like 10-11.... you can still see them at 10, but you need all your night vision to do so.

And with TFOs, the fiber optic front is still good.

PS:  I think the Trijicon tritiums may be the best out there.

I like Leupold, all but 1 are Leupolds. There may be better ones made today but these are just fine for me. I haven't bought a scope in close to 30-40 years and these are working good.

That is serious long distance scope, so look for a serious long distance caliber of you intend to get best long distance performance. 6 cm, 6.5 cm,  243, 270, etc. Or one of the newer 338 to 40 caliber sniper rounds.

Or .308? Plenty of platforms/offerings for this caliber. I'm of the mind to purchase a Howa B/A for my last needed addition to my "collection.
