Excessive comfort breeds weakness. PttP

I had parked the bike in the parking lot of the Military Surplus store and was crossing the street toward the entrance.  A voice called out loudly from above, "Hey!  Do my eyes deceive me or is that a V six?"

I looked up to see a man approaching my own age working on the roof of the building.

"It's a flat six."

"Flat six?  I'll bet that thing is fast!"

"Faster than I should be sometimes."

"Ha, ha.  I'm sure."

I was going in to buy a new pair of boots.  My chiropractor had advised me that I should stop wearing my ten year old boots and I was developing painful spots between my toes.  I had my feet measured for new sneakers and the shoe expert recommended I wear 10 and 1/2.  I have worn size 8 all my adult life.  He answered when I asked that yes, sometimes feet change their shape with age.  My toes were being unreasonably pinched together.

Just a few days later, today, I was in traffic.  I was approaching a stop light.  I had my feet on the pegs, the light had just turned green and I was awaiting the vehicles in front of me to start rolling.  A young man next to me in a hot rod Mustang rolled down his window.

"Hey!  That thing has a V eight doesn't it?"

"Six."

"Six?  That's a beautiful bike!"

Traffic began rolling.  His lane actually moved more rapidly than mine and he exercised the hot rod as he was able.

It's twenty-two years old.  It has a nice custom paint job and it does display the power plant nicely.  It surely does draw some attention.

Reminds me of a story...

A well dressed businessman goes and sees a doctor. Tells the doctor he's having terrible headaches, can't focus, and has been just passing out lately. The doctor looks him over and sees he's in terrible shape yet can seem to find anything to account for it.

A few days later the doctor sees the man as he's wheeled into the ER. Passed out walking down the street. He tells the doctor he is getting worse and worse. The doctor tells him he maybe should make end of life plans.

So the man is released and goes to the clothing store to by his last suit. Tells the tailor that he is likely to die soon and would like a nice suit for his funeral.

Tailor grabs a shirt off the shelf and tells the man to try it on. The man sees it is a size 16 neck. "But I have a size 14 neck."

The tailor says "Nah, you got a 16 neck. If you tried a size 14 you would be getting headaches, couldn't focus on anything and probably pass out a dozen times a day and feel like your gonna die."

how in the world can you not feel the difference in size 8 needing 10 1/2?  Can a size 8 stretch out far enough in 10 years to be near as big as a 10 1/2 size?   Roll Eyes   Not a huge boot fan, but KEEEN makes a nice pair of hiking shoes/boots in either non steel or steel toe shoes much lighter and comfier than most normal leather type look work boots.

when I go shoe shopping,  is harder and harder to find a size 11 (probably most common size out there for adult men) with wide EE or EEE width in plain old white color.   When I find a set under 30-35 bucks,  I buy 2 sets since I seem to go thru tennis shoes every 1 year or less.

I went thru 2 sets of tennis shoes in under 3 months due to my own fault.  I was working on kids car on one leaning heavily under the glove box area to fix blower fan with my left side of tennis shoe pushing off the concrete outside and rubbed within 30 minutes the lacing/stitching off the left side of tennis shoe ripping out the side.  The other time was fixing my kids car once again doing the front brakes/rotors sitting outside on concrete must have had my left side of left shoe on NEW pair of tennis shoes again rubbing on concrete and blew out those stitches again on left side all the way down.  Lesson learned wasting 60 bucks in 3 months going to wear flip flops next time..... 2funny

I think it is funny though if a guy thought it had a V8 thinking our Valks was a BOSS HOSS.  I saw a few of those V8 big boy bikes and man oh man,  them are HUGE.

Several years ago a good friend was complaining about having trouble finding shoes in his size 8 super wide. We were both barefoot at the time. In looking at his foot vs mine I could see little difference in size. At the time I wore a 11d. We put our feet side by side they were about the same. Turns out the were. It has been years since he had his measured. When measured he was a 11d.

Moral it pays to measure your foot when buying shoes.

For years I thought I wore 8EEE then 8.5 EEE. I had major problems with my toenails always cracking. Changed to a 9 EEE and those problems disappeared.

I’ve been told that the size of a man’s feet is synonymous with other body parts.   I’ve decided it must be the ears.  They continue to grow with age also.  Sad

Great story Willow.

It is about the political climate. People claiming our Valkyries are Boss Hoss bikes, V-6s, V-8s. All that is FAKE NEWS.

The expert told me it's not so much the feet growing as it is the arches collapsing.  I've other body parts that have been collapsing with age.  There may be a normally correspondent relationship but it doesn't seem to be growth.

My son, with large feet, told me once that men with big feet have really long ....................................................... shoelaces.   Wink

Not Valk related.   When I was young, I could walk bare footed and leave a heel and ball print.  Nothing else, very high arch.  Size 11A was a little big.  Now some 50 years later wear size 13D, and leave a much bigger print.  Arch is not so much any more.  May have to see if i can find a 14 next time.   2funny 2funny

It's actually subliminally political.  Studies have indicated that men who wear shoes in which their toes are closer to the tip tend to be conservative, some extremely so.  Those who wear shoes with extra space past the toes tend to be liberal.  Even the waste of space in shoe size seems to be touched by liberal or conservative thinking.

I understand the effect as I've noticed that as I wear the shoe size recommended by the (liberal?) shoe expert I am tending to relax more in my once conservative views.

 Wink

Truthfully I am wearing the recommended 10.5 in the running shoe (sneaker, I don't run anymore) but I purchased boots in the 9.5W size.   Smiley

So you don't run around anymore but sneak around now and they make a shoe for that? Amazing. I don't run around or sneak around anymore. Found out they make a shoe for me too. Loafers.
