Wife and me are changing primary care, but they don't have new patient forms online. So I thought I'd take a ride out to Bonner (about 9-12 miles from home) to get them and hopefully I would get the text that her scripts were ready for pickup (got it on the way out there). Temps in the 95+ area, with heat index 100+ (probably closer to 105). It's not too bad IF YOU'RE MOVING (especially at highway speeds). But jeans and Jean jacket were a bit much for parking lot /driveway manuevers.

Excuse me while I rehydrate....

My older brother is a PGR rider. He invited my and Chris to join him and some other PGRs in our 4th of July parade in New Haven.  It was hot. I broke one of my rules. I rode in shorts. I had my helmet on but shorts and sneakers.

We just got back from N/E Wisconsin and it was 93 degrees.  Even the deer ticks were at Dairy Queen.

Not only hot, but wet and quite noisy.

Yesterday evening a terrific storm blew in, with some amazingly violent thunder and lightning (the worst in 30 years here).  I was sitting here at the computer thinking it will really suck if we lose power, because not only will I lose my AC, but also my sump pump.  Literally within one minute of that thought a giant clap of lightning knocked out all power at 12:30PM.  I have a big generator out in the shed, but we usually (but not always) get power back within hours.  But last time was two days.

The rain slowed way down, and no water was running into the sump hole (yet), so I went to bed to deal with it in the morning.  Laying there calculating how much pure gas I have on hand (and hours of generator run time), and wondering how long the power will be out.  I just went a week with no AC two weeks ago.

But at 2AM, it rained like bloody hell (the one inch per hour, wall of water stuff), and I got up and the sump hole was filling up.  Rather than go through the crap to start and hook up the generator (or be outside with tremendous lightning strikes hitting the ground), I just got down and bailed the sump hole by hand as fast as I could.  For about an hour and a quarter, until the rain finally slacked off and the hole stopped filling.  So I went back to bed, sweating with no AC or fan, feeling quite soggy (and perturbed).

At 430AM the power came back on, and the AC, and the sump pump (hooray), but the back yard would float a canoe.

Sometimes I think I should just dig deep and get one of those whole house Generac natural gas automatic-on generators, so I don't have to worry about this crap (as much).

Or at least a battery backup sump pump setup, but I don't think I have enough room for it in my very limited space.

I have a great generator (not for 220 though) but it occurs to me that every time I need it, it's either freezing cold and ice and pitch dark, or hot and raining like hell with lighting all over the place and pitch dark (between lightning strikes).  I never seem to need it on nice days. crazy2 tickedoff

Jess,  NO way I could bail out my sump pump by hand would never work I would be up all night long and into the next morning.    When my sump pump failed for my house basement I attempted the 12 gallon capacity (fairly big) shop vac sucking it up and after 20 minutes of filling that thing up 10xs or so not making a dent in the level of the crock,  I gave up and hooked up 1 of my 2 backup portable sump pumps which ran for about 1 hour with a LARGE hose hookup not just a garden hose or would have been easily 1 more hour running into my drain tile in floor.

Yesterday when it rained over 1 inch in that 1 hour or so 1st time in over 12+ days NO rain and 90 degree heat,  we had our sump pump running again every 1 minute or so that is how fast it was filling up.  Our patio and some parts of grass was a floodplain or so it seemed but soaked in after 8 p.m. (a few hours later) no more standing water on grass and patio.  Of course was mowing the lawn when the rain appeared to be 6 p.m. start but started 515 p.m. darn it but got most grass cut last 4 minutes in heavy downpouring rain before I gave up and came in felt like hail coming down hitting me the rain was that hard with strong winds.

Now only 62 degrees out much to my surprise but once again,  HEAT is coming mid-day again once the fog burns off 92 degrees today, how lovely....

Yeah, but your heat is a DRY HEAT. Ours comes with a dew point usually over 65 (and over 70 is quite common especially this week) - step outside and its like you just entered a sauna. Smiley And then both of us feel the pavement exuding heat - the thermometer on my handlebars was showing right at 100 (and the air temp was around 92).

S'posed to top out at 90° here this weekend.  For God's air conditioner also known as Gunnison, that's hot!

Yeah, but your heat is a DRY HEAT. ...

It is a bit humid in east Kansas but when someone downplays dry heat I remind them that turkeys are roasted in a dry heat.   Wink

I grew up in Hutchinson, so I know about dry, triple digit heat Smiley (not quite as dry as Arizona, but still dryer than KC has been recently) Hutch has in years past been mentioned as the highest temp in the nation on occaision including stretches where the LOW was over 100.

I grew up in the Tulsa area, where one could enjoy 99 degree temps with 96% humidity.   I left there in '69 and headed west were the temps are not as high and only time the humidity gets above 80% is when it rains.   This morning we went for a walk at 6 with dog, it was 40 degrees.   it will get into the 80's later today, cooling off into the 40 again tonight.  Great weather.   Cool

We're got a heat advisory from Friday thru Monday.  They're saying temps will be in the 112-118° range.  Time to put the sweaters up.

I remember living in Grand Junction years ago when there was a twelve day stretch of 110° plus highs.  I think we were around 117° for a handful of those days.  People were dangerously pissed off.

Be careful with that - good way to crack the windshield (and other glass). You really need to invest in a ice / snow scraper ( under $5 US). Or - prevent the problem in the first place with a garage or at least putting a tarp over windows / windshield.

In amazon.nz , search for "snow brush and ice scraper "  (sorry that I under estimated prices).

I fit screens as part of my job, its an issue if the mirror is glued to the screen, mine isn't but I also don't use very hot water....never cracked one yet (if I did I get paid to fix it with glass cover). Warm water also stops fogging up the inside while the engine warms up...

Ok , as long as you know what you're doing. I didn't want you shelling out $$$ for needless expense (and most of us here in the US and Canada at least know about snow and ice and have to deal with it in the winter).
