I just purchased this wheel

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1997-1999-Honda-GL1500-Valkyrie-1500-C-CT-Standard-Tourer-REAR-WHEEL-RIM/312233065214?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

for my 97 standard so I can try a MC tire on my bike again. As I look down to the description, I see that the wheel is actually from a 2000 interstate,,, they messed up their auction. I am wondering if I can use this wheel?  I have not received the wheel yet, it should be here tomorrow.

All Valkyries OEM size tires are the same.

If you don't use the OEM tire, then you need to research if it will even work on your bike. The usual problem is the tire is too wide and hits the nuts for the rear fender. Look up fender mod (?).

All wheels interchange, but you need the rotor that matches whatever wheel
you have.

So if this wheel is off a 2000 interstate, I need a 2000 interstate rotor? What is the difference in the rotor Mike?, is it offset?

Will the rotor from any interstate work and still match my caliper?

The wheel/rotors ware were all changed in 2000. The rotor/bolts are also specific. What year is your valk.

There's two kinds of wheels. There's the kind all Valkyries had at first. Then, when Honda
started making Interstates in 99, Interstates came with the new kind of wheel. In 2000
all Valkyries from there on came with the new kind. The rotors don't mix, though some
people "get by" by using washers or something to shim old rotors onto new wheels. Trying
to put a new rotor on an old wheel is pretty much a train wreck. It is by far the best to
have a rotor that matches your wheel. A matched wheel/rotor will work great on any
Valkyrie. Besides being able to see the slight difference if you have each type of
wheel side-by-side to compare, there's some words/letters cast into the wheel
that also designate which kind you have.

OK, thank you for the info men.  I had seen the post on the 1J and 2J wheels when it went by in 2017, but did not remember it...  I will wait at this point to see which wheel I receive from pinwall. If the listing is to be believed, the wheel is a 1J that was installed on a 2000 interstate. If their listing is messed up and it is a 2J wheel, I will see if they will supply me a rotor. Looks like your Valkyrie knowledge is getting pretty deep Mike.

When I put a MC tire back on my bike, after several years on a CT, I will post my thoughts....  if I can keep it upright.

Ida know  Smiley ...

Wimp called me once wondering if I could help figure out why his extra
wheel scraped on the rotor after he put it on. I read a bunch of old posts
and looked through the part numbers in the on-line fiche...

The 1J and 2J information is correct. One thing to be careful of though, even if a wheel comes off of a certain year Valkyrie  it might have been previously replaced for some reason.  For example, my 98 Tourer now has a 2000 Interstate wheel.

That might be the case with this pinwall wheel, which would explain the listing, they have been doing this long enough that they may have caught it. If so I can use my existing rotor, either way, it looks like I will use the wheel, just may have to hit them up for a rotor...  may end up getting another any way as mine is getting close to 6mm.

All in all, it's a relief as it made me jump when I noticed the discrepancy in the listing... looks like a good clean wheel and will polish up nicely.

So, I examined and blew up the best picture of the wheel (their pictures are in a lower resolution) and was able to make out that the wheel is a 2 J off the 2000 Interstate, so the listing title was wrong. I called pinwall and pointed out the discrepancy, and offered them the solution instead of them sending me a return shipping label. I had already located this rotor

 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-GL1500-REAR-BRAKE-ROTOR-DISC-99-03-CF-Valkyrie-00-01-C-CT-CD-Valkyrie/312720352536?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

they had on eBay, and they agreed to send it to me free of charge. It will be on the way tomorrow. Fed Ex updated delivery of the wheel, moved it up a day,  and it should be here tomorrow so I can start cleaning it up.

Another successful outcome to something that could have been a mess thanks to VRCC members and pinwall cycle parts.

Thanks again guys,, I'll post something about my impressions when I try the MC tire again.

Could you include why you went back to a MC wheel?

Just want to ride on a MC tire for awhile, make sure I'm not missing anything.

I like the idea of being able to switch back and forth with minimum hassle.

Well, I received the wheel and rotor from pinwall, cleaned everything up and in good riding condition and exchanged  the wheels.

Went for a ride and after being on car tires for several years the differences were really noticeable. The first thing I noticed was the bike felt a bit wobbly going straight line, think I had gotten used to depending on the stiff sidewalls for some stability. After a few miles I noticed how light and easy the bike felt going into curves, not as much input required and the bike seemed to flow around the curves. It also feels more nimble, light and precise in general. I now feel that the car tire feels a bit clumsy compared to a MC tire, but I will certainly put the Leao Lion UHP back on when the Dunlap is finished,, I also think I will put another MC tire on the wheel with the Dunlap on it.
Glad I got a second wheel, and I see there is a place for car tires on my bike as I think I will ride one when going on a long trip, but for around here a MC tire provides better slow speed handling.

Pancho, I noticed in your picture you had a blue dot in your taillight. I have been thinking of this on mine but with the curved lenses I was not sure it would work. I have found some on ebay but they look like they were for flat lenses. Where did you get the blue dot?

Hey 6adan, the blue dot was already installed in the tail light lens when I picked the bike up in Valdosta Georgia back in January 2013. It is a bit of a sloppy job under close inspection, it does not fit flush which does not bother me, but it is not perfectly centered which bugs me to the bone,,, thinking about getting one of these

maybe just getting a new one,, just never got around to it yet.

I have looked at those also but I like the look of the old school blue dot. Might go ahead and get a blue dot and see what I can do with it.

Search for a glass blue dot, most are plastic and do less of the purple flash. Don't attempt to make the hole in the lens by hand, use a drill press and make a jig to hold the lens firmly and level, go slow with sharp tools.... lenses can add up.
