Thinking of getting a second bike.  For longer distance riding 2 up.  If you had the choice between a sweet 2001 interstate or a 2001-2006 1800 goldwing.   Which would you buy?  Current ride 2001 standard.  Love it just want better comfort and storage.  Appreciate your opinions.

If you haven't tried a 1800 Wing you should.

tough call all depends on how a newer goldwing fits your body.  some like it some do not.  comfort is key and only your body can decide that.  I could get used to it, I think, but feel the 2001 on up goldwings sit me too straight upward and has too much tupperware surrounding me.   If priced the same,  I would get a newer goldwing I guess?  The price of 2001 thru 2008 or so goldwings are coming way down in price to that 5-8K mark which is not much more than say my 2001 VAlk I/S in pricing.  slightly faster, slightly more agile, fuel injection, etc. would be nice though?

Kind of hard with out additional information.

I've had the Valk IS, GW GL1500 and have ridden the GW GL1800.

The GL1800 starting at 2001 are low enough cost to almost match the GW GL1500, so if insurance isn't an issue, I would go there (with all the bells & whistles).

My wife found the GW GL1500 more comfortable than the Valk IS, but she is comfortable on the IS.

So in my case it's what do you want? Plastic all over your bike (GW) or an open sided cruiser? I went for the cruiser, more appealing, and sold my GW GL1500. Both 1500 had the same things, and I wasn't giving anything up. But the 1800 has a little more, and that FI and I expect better mileage too, but I could be wrong there.

Parts are all available, and reliability is there for all.

Now if you are going to sell your standard, then I would buy the Valkyrie IS.

You wouldn't go wrong with either. Valk has more style and uniqueness. There are loads of GL1800s on the road and they all look pretty much the same. However the Wing is a bit faster and handles better. Its fuel injection is great both for mileage and maintenance, and never worrying about hydrolock. The condition and price would probably be the tie breaker for me.

One more thing is luggage space. I was surprised how much larger the Valkyrie saddle bags are than the GL1800 bags. But with the trunk that's less of an issue.

Well,

2001 Valkyrie Interstate it is.  Prestine condtion, little over 20,000 miles, Ultimate seats, lots of expensive aftermarket chrome.  Carbs rebuilt by Big bf, plus LED headlight conversion, right before he bought it 2 years ago from original owner.  Price was right.   Under $6,000.  Been looking at 1800 wings, rode a couple their really nice, comfy.  But the aint no Valk.  Go pick it up after work tonight.  2 hour ride back home.  I'm hoping I maid right decision.  Thank for your input guys.  Oh, it's Champane and black 2-tone.

Peace, Ron.

congrats,  give it a good test ride though first to make sure it is what you want.  If not made the right decision,  am sure give it 5 years from now still get 5K for it not out much over the next 5 years or so.

I bought one 249cc scooter 8 or 9 years ago wife thought I was nuts will never use it,  have put on about 10K miles on it and used it quite often only pd 1 grand for it still can get 1 grand for it not out a dime guy was leaving the state end of November 1 week later,  asking 1800 which is technically at the time what it was worth, could tell he was desperate so flashed 1K cash he took it.  Last year old guy wanted to sell his 638cc burgman for 1995 snatched that up as well can keep it 8 more years still get 1900 for it not out much at all.

as they say,  2nd bike just get ONE MORE!  why not?  Oh yah,  I am done,   wife put an end to it said have to sell something to get something else.  I agree,  my garage is full of cycles (and 2 lawnmowers)  Evil  Neighbors and walkers going by my garage think I opened up a used cycle shop... 2funny

Good find, I check the prices over here once and a while and have been seeing some asking 7k for an I/S, it's crazy, even asking 5K + for a standard.

Asking price and selling price are two different things.  Don't check here.  We have people that join for almost the sole purpose of selling their Valkyrie.  They believe they'll get the best price here among the devoted.

If you want to know what they're going for check the sold prices on Ebay.

depends on location somewhat am sure,  but 7K for an I/S nowadays is asking a bit much unless pristine, accessorized, and low mileage since good used say 2005 or so goldwings under 45K miles are going for around that 7-8K range.  Hard to justify even if priceless to some 7K for a 2001 Valk I/S.    Then again,  what cycle is so purdy and timeless as our 1997-2003 Valkyrie not being made anymore and all?  Once they gone, they gone..... unlike a Goldwing dime a dozen.

What I find ironic nowadays are used 1983 to 1986 or so honda magnas and honda nighthawks, etc. asking 2500 or so when in the late 1980s you could get one near new but used well under 10K miles for like 2500-3500 range back then.  Some are asking even over 3500 for a low mileage one today when brand spanking new was 4K or so back in mid 1980's.  More like 1500 bucks today if you ask me tops for something that needs some attention for sure and not mint and near 40 years old now.

Oh, it's Champane and black 2-tone.

One of the rare colours I like in the IS line. That and the red/black. Oh, and the Blue/silver. And the ... actually, I like all the colours. But if I had the time, I would have sold my IS and buy Oss IS he just selling.

Thinking of getting a second bike.

I know you said second bike, but I think you'll find like Serk that you'll like one over the other. I insisted on the radio because of getting caught in a summer heat traffic jam on the main Hwy out of town. Luckily a MC down the shoulder isn't too bad, next exit, and then turn around and head back/around the accident area.
