Looking for advice on wiring up my Valk to pull a trailer. I have a Hitch Doc hitch and am pulling a trailer that has independent turn and brake lights .... no LED's thou. Can ya help me out ?? Thanks !!

When you say independent brake and tails... do you have separate wires for taillights and brake lights (5 wires on the trailer side) or is it the more common.... Brown/Green/Yellow/White wires on the trailer side?

When you say independent brake and tails... do you have separate wires for taillights and brake lights (5 wires on the trailer side) or is it the more common.... Brown/Green/Yellow/White wires on the trailer side?
It has a square shaped plug with Brown/Green/Yellow/White/Red/Blue wires and the Red is not used. Also, what about the use of relays ?? Thanks |

Usually when you get into Red and Blue wires on the trailer, they are used for AUX power (red) and brakes (blue), but then again, some don't follow the coloring standards.
I would need a bit more info on the trailer, or the light setups to really think about it...
As far a relays, they aren't needed, but you should try to find a isolator that protects your Valk's wiring from any problems with the trailer's lights/wiring. Hoppy makes these types of isolators.
I am not familar enough with a wiring setup on a trailer such as yours. I only know about 4 wire on the trailer-side to 5 wire on the motorcycle-side using the Hoppy convertor/isolator.

Thanks for the advice .... now to figure out where to run the wires and plug without looking like crap What I did was come out behind the cover on top of the swing arm. Ran above exhaust and under passenger foot pegs. Zip ties it to the oem saddlebag gaurd. Ran it behind the bag zipping it to the bag supports. Angled over to underneath the hitch. I have a protector cap on mine and looped it thru the chain mounts. I left slack behind the bag if needed. Its hard to see unless your looking for it. Mine is a harness by Hoppe. If you get one from them you maybe able to get a adapter for bike to trailer. Also check with a trailer place if you have some nearby. Post a pick to and that might help! |

my oem flasher was fine i ran the wiring along the frame rail and added sealed covered fuses to each wire before the converter and tucked the whole mess under the radio under the seat all wiring needed is in the right side cover as stated earlier i just used a flat 4 plug for now everyone that runs the round plug has issues with them and on the road k.i.s.s. is better .. kiss =keep it simple stupid
it dont matter if your plug looks better if your repairing it every ride

i leave my plug in the trunk underthe capret when not in use. when i know i am on my 2 week vacation and want the trailer i run it down along the Hitch Doc with wire ties. when vacation over i put it back, also saves the plug from gunkin' up.

That's a "6 square" which are not that common. On a trailer that size, I would be surprised if all the pins are used, but then again I could be wrong. Usually, that type is used for a trailer that has brakes or maybe an aux power (separate circuit for utility lights, etc.). I would trace the wires and see where they go. Most probable, the maufacturer wired a 5 - wire system, that being separate brake and tail to match a motorcycle's wiring. If that is the case, one of the pins on that plug does nothing. As I see it, you have two choices; trace the wires. Use a 12V power supply, or simply use a mc or car battery. Clip a wire from the "-" on the battery to the female on the plug. Then one by one use a wire clipped on to the "+" on the battery and touch each pin one by one, and see what lights up. That way you should be able to match function with wire color. Either that, or contact the manufactuer and find out how it's wired. That may be your 1st, best choice, as you don't know whether they followed common wiring schemes or went off on their own (wire colors, etc.) Connecting that to the motorcycle, once you find out what each color wire does on the trailer, would be pretty direct, get a 6 - square plug (example: http://www.wiringproducts.com/contents/en-us/d174.html) and tap in under the right side cover where the lighting wiring harness connects together. I don't think there is an isolator for a 5 or 6 wire system, so it would have to be a direct-connect in to the system. |

Bought a used Starlite trailer this weekend. Got the hitch on and the wiring done enough to test. My problem is there isnt much of a change between run light and brake light. And when I do hit the brake, the light actually dims for a second then brightens up.
The trailer has LED for rear run light and side lights. Theres bulbs in the run brake turn light.
Here is the rear setup:

1 - Left Run Brake Turn
2 - Run
3 _ Right Run Brake Turn
I dont have any LEDs on the bike, and I already have a trailer converter from my bike run brake turn mod. Any ideas?

I wired mine up just before INZANE I attached the wires at the harness connection behind the right side cover. All the wires can be unplugged at that connection and I soldered them to the connectors without cutting into the harness. (clean install) ran the trailer harness along side the hitch bracket with wire ties. When not in use I coil it up and hid it under the seat.

Thanks for the advice .... now to figure out where to run the wires and plug without looking like crap I made a pigtail of all the wires that needed to go to the trailer connector, covered it with a military spec nylon webbing and ran it under the fender (zip tied to the existing wires) then around the forward edge of the fender up into the battery box. I made the connections for all the lights right at the main harness hub under the tail of the gs tank. Everything I did is invisible, no can see any wires at all........been working for years. I do havae LED's so I didnt bother with a relay.......such low draw.....you should add a relay under the seat and that would be someone else to splain that one |
