Anywhere to find the plastic piece that connects the left and right side covers? How difficult is it to remove?

I think the center cover is very hard to remove and replace... but you can do
it without breaking it and without cutting the frame  cooldude ... I remember
using blue painter's tape on the front of it to keep from scratching it up... the
tip-over-switch is attached to the back of it... don't put that on upside down...

I recently pull off my standard center piece to get it painted. It does take some patience to get it out of there. It really wasn't that bad, the area is kinda tight.....
The seat lock and some electronics bolt to the back of it. (Oh that's the tip over switch?)

- Wish I had remembered to take some photos of it all together......
Hey Dad, mbe you could do that first? (I'll be asking the forum for pics on the assembly anyways.)

This thread is strangely convenient, my painter just called to tell me he's done. I'm having it painted OEM silver.

 Cool

I’ll take a look at it, it’s the only problematic piece to my project and my OCD  won’t let me not have it painted...

Be sure you note which the bank angle sensor is installed.  You can put in upside down without realizing it.  If it is upside down, the bike will not start.  It is a process, but can be done.  If you buy another center, ensure the tabs are good for holding the side cover.

I don’t know, I’m kicking around going with just the cobalt blue and ditch the white stripe on my 01 or pearl Hawkeye blue which would involve pulling the center piece

It's not that difficult once you understand it's pieces and the procedure.

https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1998/gl1500ct-a-valkyrie-tourer/seat

Remove both side covers.  (Pull out lightly on the bottom back and top back to remove from rubber grommets first).

Remove the 2 bolts (#26) and be careful not to lose the 2 collars (#19).

Move the cover top forward as much as it will go.

Pull the spring clip (#1).

Remove the cable end from the lock cylinder. (I use 90* needle nose)

Remove the lock cylinder.

From the seat/battery area, use a screwdriver to remove the Tilt Sensor (#8).  Notice which way it is installed.

Gently pull up on the cover to remove it from the grommet in the bottom.

Reverse to install.

... or at least look on there and see the GIANT this-way-is-up arrow
embossed on it.

Taking the cover off really wasn't that bad.... I would say mine was off mbe 30 minutes.... just a bit fumbly.  But really every mechanical job on the Valk is always a bit fumbly.....it goes with the territory... Smiley

I believe I found it harder to put back on, than take off. Also, when I placed it back on, I found I had to force the bolt holes to align.

The space for the blot, I couldn't figure if it should be between the cover and frame, or the cover and the bolt. I ended up putting it on the bolt side.

Gordon, I believe it goes the other way.  So that the cover does not have contact with the frame.  Looking at the fiche graphic, it shows it that way.
