I took the bags off this evening in preparation for getting a new Avon Cobra for the rear of the bike.....That bag "quick-drop kit" is the cat's meow.....looks like I'll have gotten about 6,800 miles on this last Cobra...I'm down into the wear bars but should be able to make the 50 miles over to where I'm getting a new tire....I am pretty good about keeping the rear tire at 42 psi, but for some reason, I just can't leave a redlight like an old lady....I love to wind the old girl out!!..... cooldude

You only got 6800 miles out of a Cobra?   Shocked  If you ride more than that a year, you really need to go darkside.

take it all apart and clean and wax everything.  Put some new black paint on the pans under the bags.

I usually ride about 10,000 a year, but this year only the 6,800.....the tire is about a year old...I don't even take the bike out of it's little shed unless I'm going to ride ~100 miles at least...no going back and forth to work on it...it's not far enough to get the engine warmed up good.....

Most of my riding is on weekends and the occasional VRCC ride....most of my riding is done in the Mountains and I'd prefer to stay with the Moto tire...I've had several very good rider friends of mine go darkside only to come back to the moto tire for the kind of riding we do...I know Joe and a few others like the car tires and can make them work for them, but like I said in an earlier post, you could use a putter to play pool, but a pool stick will work best....no one ever said having a motorcycle was going to be cheap..... Sounds like too much work to me....I hate washing and waxing.....LOL...but, I did wipe the fenders off and the top of the exhausts....and I knocked a little dust off of the back wheel.....I guess I'll go ahead and change the differential oil while the bags are off...time for an oil change also....and I need to change the fluid in the clutch....I should have done that back in June when I did the front and rear brakes, but didn't for some reason?.....I also noticed the rear brake pads are starting to get thin, but Mike Marshall has got me to thinking I should rebuild the calipers the next time I have the pads out....I'd also like to look at the U-joint and drive shaft/splines and etc...

I replaced the bulbs in the pod lights back in June with some bulbs Big Mike sent me, but I noticed tonight that the bulb in the left pod is out again...#$%!@!!....

The old Girl just turned over 80,000....80,029 to be exact...

when it was warm... let me know if you need anything Stanley, I'll come over to Athens and we
can eat at the Taco Stand...

I guess I need to order some new pads and whatever other parts I need to rebuild the brake caliper pistons...I haven't noticed anything sticking on the brakes...I think i replaced the rear pads about a year ago just before one of Joe's rides...and I know I didn't clean the piston cylinders before I pushed them back in..... Sad.......maybe I got lucky that time...I do remember having a hard time getting that little screw to come loose to even get the old pads out.....

I'd appreciate any help you'd be able to give me Mike.....you've already done more than your fair share...I wish we were able to do a big wrench party weekend like some of the folks out West of us....

I've noticed that since there is plenty of air circulation at the bottom of my little bike shed, that I don't get condensation on the bike...I guess it'd be a problem if it were more airtight...I had planned on replacing that canvas type cover with a traditional wooden building when the covers need replacing, but then I'd have to worry about heating/cooling it to keep the condensation off of it....

My Wife bought that little 10'x10' shelter for me for Christmas a couple of years ago, but it took me over a year to put it together...I waited until I had a floor poured for it...I'm glad I had a vapor barrier placed under it to keep moisture from coming UP through the concrete!!...I only wish it were at least a 12'x12' shed....I can always add on to the concrete and make it larger I guess??!!.... cooldude

I cleaned my caliper "down to the pistons" last time I had it off, and then popped them out with
some compressed air to have a look.. it's easy to see the grunge I would have pushed back in there if I
hadn't gone ahead and popped them all the way out and cleaned them... this picture is after
I'd cleaned everything as well as I could, and then popped the pistons out a little...

I had a big go-around with one of those same little screws/caps a few years back... I have some
extra ones on hand now, and always use anti-seize when putting them back on.

I know what it's like to do maintenance out in the weather.  I used to do it in the gravel parking lot of the FEMA trailer park I was living in after Katrina.  Currently doing it in a carport.  Not much change, I've got a roof over my head but the rain can still blow in and I don't have to kneel in gravel anymore.

I think Mike is right...I think we better wait for warmer weather this Spring before doing any hardcore maintenance....I'll just ride until then!!.... cooldude

At least we're in the South... even in December or January, we can always expect that
a run of days that hit 50 or 60 are likely.

I picked my ratty Valkyrie up from Philadelphia in November three years ago, and spent all my free
time fiddling with it and ordering stuff from eBay until January or so... I learned a lot about the
vacuum quirks of our gas tanks... turns out that if you tilt the tank on its nose without holding
your thumb over the overflow pipe, you can set up a siphoning action... I came out the morning after
I had first taken the tank off,  (it got down to 25 or so that night) and a frozen solid fountain of gas
(glad it was outside!) was "shooting" a foot or so straight up from (I forget which gas tank orifice)...

I got lost in that, Fudgie.  Are we talking mattress, rubber, or steam?   coolsmiley

Well....we have a few "warm" days here through the winter, but you never know when they'll be??!!....my little shed is too small and not air tight enough to try to heat it up.....I did get a new rear tire today and they also changed the final drive oil for only $5 while they had it in the shop.....

They told me that me back brake pads were getting thin, which I already knew, so I guess I better order some new ones soon..
