Doing routine cleaning in the yard , I disturbed a nest of ground bee's .  They were under a tile on my side stairs going down to the lake. I have been stung many times in the past , but yesterday , my ankle and wrist where i was stung several times is so swollen I can barely walk. I guess I will have to drink a beer left handed.  I do not think it is age (?) related. I was immune to poison ivy growing up , So I do not think I will take a chance and pick a bouquet for the ex.  2funny

Hey Prez, When I was  a lad yellow jacket/wasp were just a minor problem.  Stung on second, gone the next.  Spent a summer in Western Montana working in the woods.  Would get stung 4-8 times a day by yellow jackets.   No problem.   Fast forward many decades to a couple years ago.  Got stung by yellow jacket, area swelled up and stayed that way for a while.   Guess that years and too many stings do add up.   2funny

Now you take a the simple honey bee.  They really do effect me, lots of swelling.  Try to avoid them at all cost.

Yellow Jackets and Bald/White Faced Hornets, I burn them out after dark. I haven't found a nest this year, yet.

I do what I can to save the Honey Bees.

I'd been stung by everything as a kid and young man.  No more than normal pain.

In my 60's here at my house, I got hit by yellow jackets several times, and holy crap I really swelled up and got stiff, and it got worse for several days before getting better. (never go to doctors)  The oral Benedryl did me some good (and makes me sleep).

I'm not anaphylactic (no breathing or shock issues) and have always had a good immune system, so if it's not general older age, it's nastier venom (which seems unlikely).

I discovered that every spring they are out scouting around for new homes in the ground or rotten wood or wet places, and I actively hunt them.  Early spring they are fairly docile and not in swarms, so easy to kill.  So I never let them get started on the property, and all has been good.

In the middle of night when they are all in the nest, find the entrance hole pour SEVEN DUST on the entrance, no more bees.
When I cannot mow, take care of my property or enjoy my property without getting stung, the bees are history.

I find the nests in daylight (like Elmer Fudd... vewwy carefuwwy).  Then I go out at night with a big flat rock and a big cup of gasoline.  I pour it down the hole and light it, count to 3, then cover it with the rock.  That seems to work.  They are only ever all home in the nest at night.

When they got in my roof ridge vent, I used the expensive spray that shoots 20 feet, and used 3 cans (and was dressed up full coverage).

If you hunt and run them off in springtime, they have no nests on your property.

Yellow jackets are not actually bees, they are wasps (family genus).

I always have some black wasps and big carpenter bees around and they never cause any problems at all.

Hope you're better soon.

Took my PTO driven mower to the shop to have a new belt put on and have the blades sharpened.   They said they were having a hard time getting the appropriate belt.   Well, that was three months ago.   I have a back up mower so, I wasn't too worried about it.   Took the back up zero turn mower in for some work and while I was there, asked about the tractor PTO mower.  It had only been there for most of the Spring and Summer.

They said they finally got the right belt but when the kid went to pull the access plate off, there was a Wasp Nest inside the mower and they got him good.  Their words, not mine.

The owner said he would have to have someone else put the belt on because the kid won't go near it again.   I reminded the owner that I had been using that mower up until the day I brought it to him so, that Hornet nest wasn't in it when I brought it to them.

That was last week, I'm still waiting on a call to come pick up the mower.   Sure hope the "Kid" is OK but, you'd think a shop like that would know and be prepared for such circumstances.   I mean really, they must have a hundred pieces of equipment sitting there for repair or for sale.

Regardless, I hope your wounds and the Kids all get better.

I think, for me anyways, those darn smaller ground bees hurt tons worse than a wasp sting.  My mom has had both but more so ground bees and every year past 4 years (except this year so far)  me or my brother have been stung by them in 3 different places in her small lot.  We really should get rid of the rotten wood of 30+ years landscape timbers sort of in tact still and tear them down since they seem to like not only the dirt below but holes in rotten wood going into the ground as well.

I seem to get stung more as well by more ground bees at a time vs. wasps.    You do not know they are there while mowing until you get stung by 1 or 2 or 6 at a time then RUN away quickly.

Moms house eastrophes had a HUGE basketball sized wasp/hornet next hanging down from way up top so high and big we used 3 cans of that 20 foot wasp spray and ice fishing suit and cycle helmet and gloves on and doused the huge nest for the entire 3 cans were used up and the nest came down disintegrated not much left of it after 3 cans of spray.

Ross you should get your PCP o wite ou a script for an epi pen. The more you are exposed to stings the more likely to have a serious reaction to them. I knew a fella that was allergic (as am I) to bee stings. He had a seat in His truck and a bee was on his seat he leaned back against it and the bee stung him and he died before he could get epi pen out and inject himself.

Speaking of "Bees", I'm interested in getting a Bee Keeper put some hives on my property.
Anyone having suggestions on this let me know.   Not trying to hijack this thread, carry on.
Wooded area, lots of wildlife, bees would be good for my wife's flowers.

That may be difficult. Good idea though.
There are now just 2 beekeepers in this area. They have not dropped off any hives at my or a friends place for 2 years now. I like having those little guys around but the populations have been dropping for quite some time. The Experimental Station has been trying to figure out why and trying to come up with other ways of fertilizing. They want us to try out Bottle Bees.

They call them Blue Bottle Flies and Blue Mason Bees.
All I know is that some nurseries are selling them in Mason Jars and say they work good.
