Hello everyone:
I am a newbie here and I ran into a dilemma when removing the tank on my I.S. I removed the left side chrome cover plate for the fuel petcock dial so I could pull the tank and several spacers came out. 3 shorter aluminum spacers that might go between the coil bracket and the frame bracket and two longer steel ones that may go between the chrome cove plate and the frame mount. Looks to me like this cover plate needed to come off to remove the fuel lever (selector dial) but I'll be darned if I know how that will all go back together. Can't really get my hands behind the cover plate with the tank on, and get all the spacers in the correct place.
Any tips would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Terry

You only needed to remove the acorn nuts holding the Chrome engine hanger cover, and the fuel shut off dial will just dangle then put a 4x4 under the back of the tank to remove the fuel line , go to the right guy side and undo the vacuum line from the petcock and be careful and make sure the vent line at the back of the tank isn’t caught somewhere before you lift the tank up for final removal. Hi somehow you try to completely remove the fuel dial and the spacers came out just try gently to squeeze them back along the existing rubber on the dial and jam the screw in place. The three screws should be anchored in before the plate and always sticking out. The dial doesn’t need to be removed to access the fuel line secured on the petcock. Hope that helps

I think he's asking for help putting the spacers back into place.
The relatively bad news, as said, is you didn't need to remove that cover.
The other news is to put them back into place you'll need to find a way to hold the spacer long enough to get a screw started through it. Most do it by fingers but you can also use a pair of needle nosed pliers with an angled tip.

If they were not modified with acorn nuts on the front yes he did need to remove it the early ones nust had a bolt and spacers. Most have been modified with all thread and stop nuts so you dont run into this problem. Had to remove my tank a couple times before mine was modified and it is a headache to put back. Trial and error eventually you will find the right combo. Good luck.

Looks like I have the "old" style set up - 6 x 40mm bolts assembled from the front, not cap nuts. Also looks like a perfect time to make the modification though!
Thanks for your help - I knew you all could help me out!
It does makes me wonder though, how they assembled that set up at the factory!

They are not factory. They were made by show chrome as an aftermarket item. Look at the bottom of this page it has a premade modification kit. http://www.carolinabikeandtrike.com/Covers1.htm

Go to Fastenal and pick up 3 40-45 mm long allen headed set screws and 6 nuts to fit. Get 3 chropme acorn nuts and you are set. Cost is under $10. Take one of the original bolts along to get the right diameter set screw as I don't remember what it is.

Years ago I got tired of fiddling with that set up so got rid of it and got chrome engine hangers. Then to remove the tank and the petcock control, you just need to remove one bolt and the phillips head in the center of the control. Want to make your life easier, just remove the engine hangers and have them chromed and sell the cover kit.
