Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: August 28, 2020, 02:54:14 AM »

Mitch and I struck out from Clinton, IA, together riding towards the next big thing… the Michigan Picnic. That would make three weekends in a row for us to attend a Valk function, and, frankly, that was more events than I’d ever attended so close together. So far so good, though, so carry on! I don’t know if it’s possible to overdose on such things, but we were going to test that premise, it seemed…

We weren’t sure of our route, exactly, but we agreed we’d much prefer to ride around the Lakes and over the ‘Big Mac’ than anywhere near Chicago, so… we pointed our rides northward and towards the UP again. We had a whole week to get there, so there would be plenty of time. Ummmm, how about we ride alongside the Mississippi River, then maybe head up to Copper Harbor…? Sounded like as good a plan as any, so we were off!

Not so fast indeed! Yep, we’d been keeping a sharp weather eye out for sure, but… rain still managed to find us…

Mitch spotted a Holiday Inn Express just as the big cold drops began, so in we pulled… They had a covered portico where we could hole-up and regroup… We could stay there if it looked really bad, or we could just wait awhile if it might clear. It appeared it would clear, so we decided to just pause for a while…

It finally did let up, so we scooted on… We passed TP & Nancy at a gas station, so we did a U-turn and went back to chat with them. That really worked out well for us, too! We checked the weather while stopped, and Mitch & I unanimously agreed to hold up again for a while, as some mighty serious looking stuff was bearing down on us. TP & Nancy, on the other hand, chose to soldier on… Personally, I think we made the better call…

We rode through a bunch of small villages… and I’m pretty sure agriculture is the main occupation around those parts… I wondered if the driver of that vehicle might have stopped for an ‘adjustment’ or just some coffee and conversation…

We spent one night right next door to a casino. There was also a railroad spur connecting to the mainline there, too, and Mitch did notice the continual comings and goings... all evening long! He also noticed the line crossed the highway close by, so... yep, they had horns on those engines as loud as the one on Skinhead's Valk!

At the casino they served a buffet meal, and it turned out to be really tasty! I normally just fill one plate, but this time I went back for seconds… That bacon, shrimp, and baked beans combo just wouldn’t fit on the plate with the first load without stacking it on top of mashed potatoes and pot roast plus some other veggies and stuff, so… Dang, that was great, too!

Ride along the Mississippi River… on the Iowa side.

Another motel we stayed in had a lounge with fireplaces outside on their quite spacious patio…

That place also had a bartender who had trailered her Harley to Sturgis… she assured us she did ride it once there, however. She also must have known our Lucky 13 (Gordon Brooks), and it appears she thinks quite fondly of him…

Mitch led the entire week we traveled together. He had some sort of arrangement he'd concocted with his smartphone and a small portable power pack hook-up, that enabled him, with much filtering and such, to find some really fantastic back roads to explore. Once he came to a turn off his contraption had led us to, and he did a U-turn. The road was unpaved… he smiled as he rode back by me and shouted, “Hubcap road!” Yeah, Mike would have loved that one for sure…

The next day he came to another unpaved road, but this time instead of turning around, he just rode on, disappearing into a cloud of dust! Double dang! Against my better judgement, I followed… Not bad for the first few miles, but then we hit a ‘washboard’ stretch and I seriously considered severing our relationship and turning back. Things improved modestly… but only for a short time before another washboard stretch!

In time my leader stopped and allowed me to pull alongside… "Only eight more miles," he encouragingly advised me… smiling like Huck Finn all the time. Man, OK, let’s get this over with! He doesn’t mind that very much, and Hubcap Mike just may actually enjoy that sort of personal abuse, but… this tenderfoot can live just fine without any more of that ‘great riding adventure’! Pavement is my friend…

The following day, he yet again came to such a road, but this time he pulled onto it and stopped… I pulled alongside and earnestly inquired, “You’ve got to be $hitting me?!!!” He smiled, executed a rather graceful U-turn, and that was the last time that came up… a circumstance I for one am quite happy to report!!

Well, I’m giving serious thought to… nah, it just wouldn’t be the same for me. Sure, it would be far more efficient and it would definitely lead us to some great roads we’d otherwise probably miss, but… I’ve had a lot of adventure due to missed turns, wrong turns, and U-turns… Perhaps later… one of these days maybe, but not now, I don’t think.

On a 1500 Valkyrie, washboard or cobblestone streets will make you
sure  your rear fender is going to fall off! Mitch is a good sport about
continuing even if the road goes dirt  cooldude ...

Mike,

Yep, I 'checked the load' several times in my mirrors on that road! Mitch is a terrific sport about everything! I've been riding with him more than ten years, and I've only once ever seen him even modestly annoyed...

He was leading a small group of us on a twisty road and got stuck behind a pickup we couldn't pass... He later told us he was certain the driver had been 'screwing' with us... It was quite funny, actually, as it was so out-of-character for him!

Yeah, your name came up several times on that ride. It would appear you've established quite a reputation for... unconventional rides on unusual roads... We still love ya, though...

Another fine job Bruce, and again I'm glad your smart phone has a camera.  Iris and I on our RV trip out West last year found that most of the RV parks out in that part of our country seemed to build them right next to at least one railroad track.  We couldn't seem to get away from them and one town even had a rail switching yard that was to say the least very active all night.

Dennis,

Yep, I recall the 'red' truck and GMC meaning stuff, too! I hesitated to mention those for... you know... PC reasons and such! Glad y'all apparently made it through 'Laura' OK... I assume Mitch made it through 'Laura' too when he got home!!!  lol

I'm going to call JP in a bit... I can't believe he'd be in Lake Charles, though... He and Bobbie both have too many friends and relatives all over the place to have stayed put... Plus, they're both way too smart to take such a risk... Anyway, I'll feel better once I've confirmed that...

Headed 'home' now... be there today... Hard to believe it's been about three months and 10K miles since last I sat on the porch there... Wonder if my landlady will recognize me?

Terry,

Thanks! Yeah, and the camera on my smartphone is a rather good one too. Only problem I've found with it so far is the operator frequently forgets to use it!

Railroad locations relative to everything else... I suppose progress and growth followed the lines back in the day... or visa versa. Probably some of both, but whatever it is, their proximity is as undeniable as it is inescapable! Far more than simply Murphy's Law... If folks travel, then they already have noticed this...

You and Iris have big plans for this year? Time to go out west or northwest is drawing to a close. There is always the southwest, though... I may just head that way myself in a couple of months... Not until the temps drop way down from their current lofty heights, though!

Really nice to see you still visiting this site and commenting now and then. We miss y'all, my friend... Please continue to hang around!

What a wonderful adventure, great story and a superb guide to lead you to paths previously unknown.

Bruce, you certainly do lead a blessed life.   We are the lucky ones though, we get to share in it with your story telling talent.    Please don't ever stop doing what you do so well.   smitten

Sounds like a great ride.  Glad I wasn't sharing a hotel room with you after the shrimp and baked beans though.  Did you have to wear your helmet on the toilet that night?

Ron,

WOW! Really nice things to say, and I deeply appreciate it! Like you, I read them too... later. I do very much enjoy making those memories, but I also enjoy reliving them over time. I suppose I'm also populating my reading material cache for a time when I'll no longer be able to... A very long time from now indeed, I hope!

Yeah, my 'guide' on that ride is a very special person for certain. He 'travels well' with others, he is bold and adventurous, and he is one of the best sports about anything I've come across. He never gets upset or pouts about not getting his way, and he is game for just about anything. There are others like that, you for example, but not as many as there should be... Most, alas, are more like this guy with a quirk or two... and more as time goes by...

Thanks again for your wonderful comments. I'm nearing the end of this 'coddiwomple'... Well, it sure started out that way, but the last few weeks were... That's part of the as yet untold story, though, so stay tuned... more to follow!

Alien,

You seem to know me rather well! Didn't have to wear my helmet for any 'discharge' activities, but I'll keep that in mind for future post 'dietary adventures'... As for sharing a room... All I can say is, sometimes sinus trouble can actually be a blessing!

Yes, it was a very good ride! It seems each ride gets better than those before... not sure why that is, but... I'm having the time of my life, and yes... I'm mighty proud to be here!

Dennis,

Yep, got 'r done! Hope that does the trick, too. Many years ago I bought her a pistol... and she turned out to be an Annie Oakley-grade shot! Ever since, the first words out of my mouth whenever I came home were, "It's me, don't shoot!!!"

Before (the back of the old crown is still on the tooth)

After (Now I'm going to have to carry a ball bat around with me again to beat the gals off)

Good luck with your next 'adventure'. Looking forward to a good report... Tell Shelia that I have some ideas for more rides this year... Heck, she'd be welcome to come along, too!

Dan,

Congrats on passing your exam! Surgery, huh...? I didn't know you were contemplating such... Well, I wish you the best! Now, if you're making yourself so available to the ladies out there, would that then suggest or imply you are also... possibly pondering a return to riding? Hope so, my friend... the open road misses you! You are a for real 'Road Scholar', and your riding credentials are most impressive!!! No kidding... I do hope things work out well for you!!!

Itching to hit the road with the 5th wheel Bruce but been trying to be safe at home.  Been here pretty much since the end of March.  Just like everyone else cooped up at home but might make a break for a mountain top of some sort soon to try to beat the heat.  We installed solar panels etc. to do what they call boondock or dry camp and not need hookups for a few days at least.  Need to test all that out.

Know what you mean about feeling cooped up - tomorrow, the wife and me are taking both cars to Topeka to have lunch with one of my brothers - whom we haven't seen or heard from since this damn C-19 came into our lives !!!! Partly also this trip is to get some highway miles on the cars - diesels really don't like just town driving. 60 miles each way door to door.

Whenever the wife and I drove two cars somewhere, I always followed her.

It was safer for both cars that way.   Grin

My better half is an excellent driver. Sometimes a bit heavier on the throttle than I would be (I really pay attention to speed limit signs - but not too close of attention to advisory speeds for turns , curvy roads etc. ( conditions permitting)). She drove our Golf from NC to KC while I drove the Beetle. Both cars had GPS , an FRS radio and we had our current at the time Smartphones. Mostly the major thing I have on her (and most people - professional truck drivers  / traveling salemen excepted) is sheer number of miles. I have somewhere between 700,000 and 1 million miles between cars and motorcycles.
