Honestly I have to confess that there have been advantages to my life that are the result of to whom, where, and into what culture I was born. I wouldn't trade those advantages for all the free Obama phones and welfare that I could be offered. Is it because I'm considered white? Probably some but I've known some very dark skinned friends who have done well with what has been provided or available to them.
When there is inequity based upon race or ethnicity I think it should be corrected. I don't think it calls for rioting, killing, or burning.
I think all Americans should be initially treated with respect. I say initially because when someone demonstrates that he is not worthy of respect I think it is right to diminish that offering but not due to race or ethnicity.
I do suspect that poverty tends to be hereditary. Many who were born into poverty tend to grow up into a similar way of life. Can that be traced back to some being freed from a life of slavery? I'm not sure.
The first time I knew how much money my father made it was $5,000 per year. I was about twenty years old and a U.S. Marine when I made that level of income (plus food and housing). I never again fell to that level even taking into consideration the change of value across the years.
Something many middle class liberals (and conservatives) don't consider is that there is a limited amount of working capital available. We would all like to see the poor people do better financially. Do adjust the distribution some of us in the middle or upper middle class will have to be moved down on the distribution ladder. I wonder how many of those demanding better opportunity for the poor are willing to reduce their own status. It's easy for us to demand that someone else give up his wealth but it just doesn't work that way.
Let's not be too quick to disregard the concept of white privilege but let's do what we need to do to reduce the amount of racial and ethnic inequality and let's certainly be careful not to ourselves participate.

I always have to check myself when we are in agreement. Well, maybe 95% agreement. There is always a limited working capital, but it can grow, and it can shrink. As someone I fondly admire in these trying times Ronald Reagan would say "A rising tide lifts all boats". In addition to what you said about equality, I would say most of us "white privileged" folks, if not all of us, have NO idea what the trials and tribulations of others are.

I wonder which is more demoralizing, people assuming your success is due to "white privilege" or assuming your success is due to the soft bigotry of low expectations "affirmative action" or reverse discrimination...
How about we just drop all the BS and judge people as individuals on their own merits as single people, not as part of a group?
"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights, cannot claim to be defenders of minorities."

white privilege really does not exist much around my area since 97 percent (or more) are white. I have been age and sex discriminated against am sure of it but no way to prove it legally. Age, sex, racial, etc. discrimination does not matter, all the same, it exists and will never go away EVER, although has lessened over the decades am sure. I for one do not buy into the white priviledged folks theory...
it goes both ways though I am 1 of 2 ONLY guy in my 15 dept. of all women. I guess they did not want to leave the other guy all alone even though I rarely have anything to do with him.

I can only imagine what it's like to walk a mile in another man's shoes, I am what I am, I was born what I am and I'm not ashamed of where I come from or, what I am. I feel no guilt, I've earned my stripes. But, I do know what it's like to have to make your way through life with out any assistance from anyone. To earn everything through your own efforts, intelligence and dedication.
I've served and worked with many individuals of all races, I respect those people that pulled their own weight more than I can tell. I honestly don't give a damn what you are, what your race, sex, religion or place of origin is if, you pull your own load. That I respect. If you want to live off the efforts of others, you're own your own. Some folks have greater challenges than others, I recognize that but, there is opportunity across this great nation. I have served with and worked with those who did not let obstacles stop them. They pulled their own weight and that's what matters to me regardless of all the "other" things people want to classify them by. I have no problem giving someone a helping hand, I have no respect for those who survive by taking handouts. Apply as applicable.
