How long are typical hunting rifles?  I’m looking for a toolbox to put in the bed of my truck, up against the cab, but not the type that spans the side rails. Although I’m not a hunter, sometime in the future I might take a friend of mine hunting who can’t drive, so I’m thinking about locking his rifle out of site while travelling. I don’t want the box to be too short.

Personally, I'm not putting my rifle in a truck toolbox unless it's in a case. My longest hard case measures up to be about 53.25" (or 1.35 meters).

You can find cheapo foam padded zipper rifle cases.  Or a heavy blanket.

Canada may also be similar to parts of US requiring a two-container rule.

1.  The trunk or tool box.

2.  A zipper case or blanket or furniture pad.

The two container rule has a long history as the (generic) proper way to transport firearms distances  through multiple states (with no permit of any kind), where the firearm is legal where you depart and legal at your destination.  (But it may do you no good traveling through places like New Jersey or NYC etc).

It also requires all firearms be unloaded.  And ammo transported separately from firearms, and also in two containers.  And none of it within the immediate reach of any vehicle occupants.

BTW, for our American friends who are converting feet to meters...your average Canadian still uses feet for a lot of things. Most of us have no idea how tall we are in meters. Or how long 1.22 or 1.35 meters is.

I’m 6’ 210 lbs. I have no idea how many meters or kg I am. and I was raised in the metric system.  We use km for distance but because all our land is broken into 1 mile sections, miles still are used a lot, especially in rural areas. Directions are often given in miles.  Longer distances are usually in km because 100km usually equals 1 hour, easy to calculate. I know how fast 100 or 120 mph feels...180 kph, not so much.  We really are a flustercluck hodgepodge of both systems.  Grin

We still use mpg for mileage, although with all the newer vehicles having a L/100km gauge on the dash, it’s now just starting to mean something.

Sorry GR. Back to the question...I’m sure you would, but I’d make sure that sucker is bolted down well and obviously lockable. I always just lock mine in the cab out of sight....tinted windows are great for keeping them out of sight.

Back to the OP question.  My western (open plains - cross canyon) hunting rifle - a bolt Weatherby 300win mag - has a case 53" long.  Can't imagine a practical hunting rifle longer than this.  It's a thousand yard, 1/2MOA rifle but responsible hunting would limit it to shots half that.
