My new to me ‘01 Interstate with 12,500  miles has Cobra 6 into 6 exhaust. (Soon to have 4” Mark T Organ Pipes). Just before I bought it, the PO had the dealer rebuild the carbs, along with a new stock air filter and plugs.  After 400 miles of mostly highway driving, it began to run rough so I checked the plugs. All were covered with a lot of soot and were apparently fouling out.
I pulled the caps on the carbs and discovered notched needles. All were on the 3rd (from the top) groove except #5 which was on the 2nd but was just as soothed as the rest. I didn’t get into the carbs yet to see what size mains and slows are in it. I’m going to put them back to stock, but in the meantime since even #5 which was on the 2nd notch was fouled, If I set all the needles on the first notch, will that be too lean?
Thanks for any advice

I use to run DynaJets. Started out on the 3rd notch. MPGs were not happy and plugs fouled. The 2nd notch fixed about all of it. Also, check the pilot screws. Factory setting is 2 turns out from lightly seated. I always get negative feedback on the 2 turns claim but start there till you get new pipes when you can then fine tune the mixture.

I’m going to clean the plugs, reset the needles to the 2nd notch, mixture screw 2 turns out and see how it runs. Ordering oem needles and jets as I suspect 38 PJ’s were installed.  New pipes arrive I in a couple weeks.
While not really needed in S. Florida, I found the choke cable out of adjustment. All the way on only pulls the enrichers out about 1/3rd. The stealership tech was probably younger than the bike.
Question.......If I return the jets and needles to oem, will I need to sync also?

When you think the enricher lever is all the wAy down push it some more. I will bet it isnt out of adjustment. Just stiff on the last 1/2” of travel as all are.

This is where I run mine w/ stock exhaust and airbox/air filter. For the stock pilot jets (#35) my sweet spot with the air screws is 2 1/2 turns out - taking into account my present elevation.

Mileage is high 20s (if I ride them like I stole them) to mid 30s (if I keep near the speed limits).

A tune like that, does not like to be "babied".   Not a "Touring" selection.

The more heavy twists on the throttle you do, the better it will run.......???

Switching to more free flowing K&N air filter should help too.

k&n lets in much too much dirt.  OEM filter flows more than enough air when I dyno'd over 115 HP.

Spicer Air Filter test shows dirt let in by k&n
