So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: September 22, 2020, 05:59:28 PM »

Halloween is coming up real soon.   I always enjoy sitting out with the wife and greeting the kids while passing out treats (while I steal candy) in the past but, this year is different.   We now live on the far end of a dead end road out in the country.   I advised my wife to not bother buying all those treats this year.   I don't expect a single kid to come by and I don't need it.

Well, she didn't listen and now after Halloween, someone is gonna have to eat all that candy.   Told her to lock it up and don't tell me where it is hidden.  Everyone has their own favorite candy.  I am particularly partial to candy corn.   I most surely don't need it.   I know that's not everyone favorite.

That brings me to the question.  What's your favorite candy?

I've never been a chocolate fan, don't know why, just never really liked it.   But, I'll ask the wife what she got and if you come by and have a good costume, I'll make sure you get the Milky Way.  Wink

So many favorites, so little time.

Actually, I recently discovered Russell Stover Sugar Free chocolates (made with Stevia).  Caramels, peanut butter cups, mint patties, etc.  They are really good.

Take 5 bars are good for something different vs. my normal kit kat, babe ruth, snickers, twix, etc. etc.

I heard there might be lots of towns cancelling trick or treat for kids anyways this year due to covid, will see?  Our small town of 1100 the kids come out of the woodwork we normally get 100 to 110 kids from say 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and I think other small local town kids come here as well to our town.

My absolute favorite store bought candy is a Payday. Which I haven’t had since my diabetes diagnosis. My absolute favorite homemade candy is called Pa new Che. I can’t spell it but that’s what is sounds like. It’s mostly brown sugar, butter and milk. I haven’t  had any of that lately either.

Nestle Crunch for myself.

For a number of years now we have purchased a box of king size candy bars in any flavor you can find.  About 24-30 in a box and about right for the number of kids we see.  But you should see the look in the kids eyes when they see the king size candy bar . . . priceless.  Try it, you will see.

Well, dog gone it.   I checked, none of those in the candy box.

OK, the wife is going out to get some.   Better be a darn good costume is all I have to say Carl....  Wink

I have always like Baby Ruth bars.   Not sure why just do.  Never been a fan of most candies.

DW informed me that there would be no candy/etc. handed out on Halloween due to the Virus.  We usually had 80-90 visitors.   I wasn't allow to hand out candy after an incident that happened in the Mid 80's involving a rubber knife, hoodie with a hockey mask, a darken home, and scared teen age girls..   2funny

I just had a good friend advise me to hand out "Cowboy Candy".
Never heard of it before (that I recall).

So  I did an internet search and came up with this:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/818312240/texas-cowboy-candy-candied-jalapenos?ref=pla_similar_listing_top-1

https://i.etsystatic.com/8064456/r/il/9781fb/450916462/il_794xN.450916462_d3ve.jpg

While I don't expect any kiddies to come around, thought I might order this just for Willow if he shows up at my door.   Of course, it all depends on his costume.  Wink

My favourite Halloween candy is Rockets (marketed as Smarties in the US).

Not typically for Halloween, the candy I look for but seldom find in candy stores anymore, are French burnt peanuts (a.k.a. pearled peanuts).  They are available here at Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops.

I know, I'm not very sophisticated in my tastes.

Works for me, those French Burnt Peanuts are good.   I find them at most of the Farm and Ranch Stores around here.

Non perells SP? Semi sweet chocolate with those hard white crunchies on top. And MANY of those sweets that have already been mentioned. Around halloween those soft circus peanuts orange sticky super sweet things that now stick to my dentures!  2funny Junior mints. Chocolate covered peanuts. Better quit now or I'll slip into a sugar coma!  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

does anyone do as I do and still eat kit kats by nibbling the wafer layers off with just your front teeth one layer at a time?  it makes them last longer right?

I have done that 45 years ago and still do today old habits hard to break I guess? Roll Eyes

On HOT summer days we use to buy those long charleston chews and put them in the freezer hard as rock but cold tasted good on a hot sweaty day as a kid.  If I tried freezing them today probably would crack my teeth or take the filling right out of them.

another alternative if you like babe ruth candy bars is the MARS bars I thought they were slighly better than baby ruths.

I did the same with my Charleston Chews as a kid. When it was hot out, I'd freeze them. When I was ready, I'd drop it so it would shatter into little pieces. Less chance of breaking teeth trying to bite off a chunk.

I'm an equal-opportunity candy guy. I don't over indulge, but I like too many to list. Never even seen those French burnt peanuts before. I may have to find some.

My fondest Halloween memory is not the candy, but the devilment.

It was the night before that most devilment occurred (though it continued the next night too).

I had outgrown the devilment myself, but one year I was certain that guys in my neighborhood would soap my car windows.  Our two story garage was on the street, and the house set way back 120 feet or more and you couldn't see out there.  And MY car didn't get in the garage.  So after dark, I went out and pulled a hose up on the garage roof and waited.  The wait was worth it, and we had tremendous water pressure.  They ran off wet and frigid (on that MI island).   Grin
