"The Kansas Comet". Arguably in the top 10 professional and college running backs of all times. Ran like a deer around and all over the field, gliding smooth and effortlessly. Was as fast and quick going from sideline to sideline as he was going up the gut. If he had had the benefits of modern day orthopedic surgery back in the 60's, he would have had a much longer career to display his brilliant running. Man, could he go! A good citizen to his community, a good teammate to his fellow players, and a compassionate man over his lifetime. Youngest inductee of the hall of fame, showing the respect earned by his play. Rest well, sir, with the peace of your spirit; may your soul run free.

I do believe you are wrong.
Gayle was the BEST running back that the NFL ever produced. (But, then again I am biased, I grew up watching him and Dick Butkus.)You are correct about his career ending early due to injuries, I wonder what he could have done if he was starting out today.

Class act he was, I grew up in Chicago.. between Gale Sayres and 'Sweetness' Walter Jerry Payton I don't know which was a a better player.. or a better man. You don't see these types of great men in pro sports anymore it seems. RIP Gale Sayres

In those times I was more interested in enjoying life and dreaming of motorcycles but Brian's Song brought tears to eye's to see such genuine friendship in a very similar time as we are enduring now in life. RIP Mr. Sayers you are truly a great person.

I knew Gale and Pic both quite well from the days when Da Bears had their training camp in my little hometown in NW Indiana. I worked at the camp and in a pizza restaurant they hung out in after hours. (if you remember the movie, they were walking up the stairs at the dorm carrying a pizza, in real life I made it) I ran into him a several years ago at the Mad Anthony's Celebrity Pro Am golf tournament in Ft Wayne. We spent a while talking about his life after football and mine after growing up. It was a great weekend.
His health had been on the decline for several years. He and many others thought it was largely due to the physical violence that had beat him up over his younger years.
RIP Gale and say "hey" to Pic for me.

Great post! You're a lucky man! Football will tear you up in the body, and the brain.. I saw the light early on and gaffed it. Bobbling my brain was something that I couldn't keep doing, thank God I got out..

What a lucky man you were at that time.
Growing up in central Michigan I remember watching him twice per season when the Lions and Bears battled it out, and then again in the pro bowls. Brian's Song may have been the first movie to bring me to tears. Shame on those knee injuries which cut him and Butkus and so many others careers short, especially in those days. The human knee was not made for football.
