Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: October 07, 2020, 05:07:17 AM »

We’re just hanging around, hanging out, and hanging on… again… Punisher has led us on two short rides so far, but mostly we’re just hanging out at his place… and eating… and eating! If I don’t hit the road again soon, I’ll be forced to buy new britches! Truth be told, I’ve never been particularly good at saying ‘NO’ to temptation, and, if anything, I’ve only become worse at that over time!

In the first place, Allan is a downright excellent cook. Yep, he can easily outdo this pitiful diner who’d starve if he had to feed himself… Not really, of course, as long as I could find bologna and peanut butter. For this solitary, unskilled non-cook, though, ‘dining out’ is not at all a luxury… it is an absolute necessity! That’s not all…

The next-door neighbor, Merida, is an even better cook! There is a well-worn path between their respective houses; one that this curious but eager guest has been allowed to stroll along to and from Pearson Manor… I’ve sometimes found myself wondering if maybe Allan might get ‘Frequent Walker Miles’ for all of his countless round-trips…

Our first evening here we went out for some ‘Q’… I did bring some home in a to-go box, though, because I was unable to say NO to temptation again, therefore I had ordered more than I could comfortably consume in only one setting… Once I spot the trough, you see, I can’t seem to keep my head out of it, but my tummy does have its limits, of course; accordingly... the frequent need…

Seemed sensible at the time I placed my order, but the other day we took those remnants of a quite good meal out of the fridge and fed them to the dogs… I’m sure those morsels would have been good if warmed, but… We’ve steadily been adding leftovers since our arrival from meals with more food presented than I could consume… and I ain’t even on a diet by any means!!! I was a bit off the mark in my previous post about our probable dining details that second evening… but first…

Allan prepared a bodacious breakfast for us that happily included generous servings of bacon, and between what I ate that morning, plus what I was unable to eat, I would normally have been set for the entire day… Didn’t happen. Nope, it was soon enough time for those red beans and rice I’d mentioned before as sundown slowly approached…

Beans…

I’d remembered correctly the part about the beans, but the part about us going next door proved to be a little off target. The neighbor’s daughter had a softball game that evening, so the food actually came here where it was consumed… well some of it. So much had been provided that a couple more meals were easily possible… and… The fridge continued to fill… It hasn’t stopped…

The following morning more breakfast delights with pancakes and bacon this time… and more leftovers. Those two dogs sharing this home are very well-fed, as you can easily imagine, and, of course, so is the host, and just as are all who are fortunate to be a guest here! I’m presently reconsidering switching to overalls, as those locally fashionable apparel items appear to be more forgiving of dramatic waistline changes… particularly expansions!

They, too, would have their theoretical limits, however, so it could be they’re not the silver bullet I may soon find myself needing after all… I’m not considering togas at present, but who knows? They were OK for riding around on chariots, I reckon, but on Valks? If I were to give those a serious try, I can just see me now, cruising down the highway with nothing between the Almighty and me but my knees and the breeze… I do have some understandable reservations about doing anything that might include the possibility of making St. Peter blush… probably even cringe…

On the other hand, I suppose I could just keep buying new britches… might even be able to avoid having to wash them at the rate we’re going… just throw the now too small dirty ones away, and… Nah, the most sensible solution I can conjure-up is to just return to the coddiewomple… but not today… “Honest, Father, I’m gonna stop just as soon as I need glasses…”

Another breakfast feast, this time with sausage, egg & cheese croissants and tater patties, followed by another day of pondering the mysteries of the universe, periods on this here smartbox, a couple of naps, all followed with an afternoon ride… I probably would have been in Iowa by then; however, the most congenial company and astoundingly good grub had combined with my near-total lack of drive or ambition… And then it was time for the much-anticipated stroll to and waddle back from next door…

Hamburger steak this time with incredible fixins! That was the best entrée feature of that sort I can recall ever having!!! It was sensational, but that wasn’t all… it was complemented perfectly with peppers & grilled onions and smothered in brown gravy with no additional seasoning needed. Plus all that was accompanied by creamy, dreamy mashed potatoes, luscious cream corn, and enticing turnip greens! Tasty cornbread rounded out that amazing meal, with all those wonderful treats combining to ‘round-out’ this most fortunate diner… Temptation abounded but will-power was nowhere to be found!!!

Yep, I overdid it… a recurring theme lately, I’m afraid… That wasn’t the first time, obviously, and as it turned out, it would not be the last… The next day was pretty much like the ones before… Later, the evening meal began with the usual stroll over, the polite, friendly banter, the finishing touches on the meal preparation, and the setting of the table… Then… AND THEN, the dining antics began!

Spaghetti & meatballs this time, with Texas toast, green beans (a story there on that unusual combination, but just accept for now that’s on me!). Again, no additional seasoning needed… Merida apparently has taste buds very much calibrated the same as mine. She seasons everything while cooking, so it all comes out perfectly to suit my preferences! I did inexplicably muster some modicum of self-control that time, however, so my discomfort afterward was hardly noticeable… A very good unplanned thing, it turned out, as the evening continued…

Now, I have mentioned in previous posts what had seemed to this frequent traveler to be a serious shortage of coconut pie around our suffering, struggling nation (the degree of which depends entirely upon which news sources you use), and that my concern had been growing… Well, imagine my relief and pure delight when Merida approached our table beaming with a broad, proud smile on her face and a delightful load in her hands…

Yep, a downright awesome looking coconut pie still warm from the oven! Talk about being glad I’d managed to find even the smallest amount of restraint earlier!!! Surprising, uncharacteristic moderation had been exhibited during the main course… It had been completely abandoned during the orgasmic dessert conclusion!!!

The big surprise…

The waddle back in the dark that evening was made more challenging by my having to carry some of the leftovers… Good exercise, I told myself, but what really made that journey enjoyable was the realization I was the one bearing the remainder of that stupendous pie! Big-time responsibility for sure, and not something to be left to just anyone… it was then my turn to be proud… Life can sure be good sometimes! Other times, it can be downright awesome!!!

Bruce, I think I gained 10 pounds just reading your post. I sure hope you'll still be able to swing a leg over Ali when the time comes and she does not need new shocks  2funny

I don’t know. You might look pretty dashing riding Ali, wearing a toga.

Fun read, Bruce.  Food and friends go together pretty doggone well indeed!

Do excercise some caution, and maybe even just exercise every now and then.  Remember what happened to this fellow.

RNFWP,

Well, I recommend coconut pie for that... if you can find it! Thanks for joining my threads!!! Hearing from my brothers and sisters is always good... and most welcome!!!

Yuri,

Man, me too! So far so good, though... Allan and I have done a wee bit of riding now and then, so at least for now I'm still OK... As for needing new shocks... well, Allan is known far and wide for his inventory of Valk stuff!!! If it did come to that, I'm in the right place! Not sure how he might be fixed for portable step-ladders or power lifts, however...

DDT

Rob,

I don’t know. You might look pretty dashing riding Ali, wearing a toga.

I do have some reservations about that ensemble... That crown might be OK, but those sandals just wouldn't cut it! As for the toga... ummm, while I might look dashing, the wind dynamics might be a little too brisk... and I'm certain a bit more revealing than the law would allow!

Yes, they absolutely do! Part of the joy of my life is all the good folks I come into contact with, spend time around, dine with, share wind with, and bond with! All over North America are wonderful folks who've allowed this non-stationery guy to share a slice of life with them, and that has raised the level of quality of life for me tremendously! I know you know what I mean... I've also found some of that in and around Gunnison, CO, ya know...

Paul,

What little I know about the 'path', besides having walked it myself several times, is that it appears to be some sort of 'barter trail'... Allan does favors for them on occasion and they feed him and his guests sometimes... The full extent and exact nature of all those favors have not yet revealed themselves to this not-so-observant interloper... All I do know is that I'm definitely a beneficiary of that arrangement!!!

There went today’s plan to keep my calorie intake low so I can shed a few pounds!  I just replaced some worn parts in my grill and after reading that report and looking at those photos, there’s going to be some cooking going on here tonight.

Great friends and great food sure do make for a great life!  Bruce, you got it going on!

Jerry,

Yeah, we all must fight the 'battle of the bulge', and the more candles we add to the cake, the more... but you know all that... I've sampled your grill proceeds, so I know the odds of trimming your waistline anytime soon are rather slim (funny using that expression for something like this, huh...?) Reckon we'll both soon be facing yet another challenge at the FCR, so... good luck to both of us! See ya there... I'll be the guy with a fork in his hand and contented smile on his face...

Bret,

Thanks, amigo, and yes, that coconut pie was long overdue... but that's not all... Yeah, 2020 has actually been a very good year otherwise! As if fate allowed this traveler to continue on a roll of happy events, the neighbor and her daughter appeared at Allan's door bearing a wonderful gift! Since we don't think we'll be here Sunday, my birthday, Merida and Ali (her offspring) baked a birthday cake for this undeserving celebrant, and they even sang HBD to me! Mercifully only six candles to blow out. Now get this... it was a coconut cake they'd baked!!! Sometimes droughts are followed by 'plenty-plus' for a period... hope it's a nice long one...

Bruce, allow me to offer you a happy pre-Birthday wish, and congrats on one more trip around the sun nearing completion!

Bret,

Thank you very much! Yep, I'm mighty glad to have successfully completed yet another solar circumnavigation... Hope to make several more, too... all on our girl, of course. Life has been so unbelievably good for this unknowing, unsuspecting novice at life, and CP has been one of the many unexpected benefits of being me!!!

And may CP be with you always my friend, wherever the wind blows upon you..

I really like that line! I'm going to try to remember it, so I can use it as a toast, maybe, at the upcoming FCR... Hope it brings me fulfillment! Wish me luck!
