Scenario one only the left

Scenario two only the right

Go.

Neither would be desirable.  My vote would be to abolish political parties and give candidates, incumbents  and voters the opportunity to make decisions and support or not support an issue without having party loyalty factor in.

Honestly, I think the two party system is the worst thing about our country.  It fosters the attitude of "us VS them" and bogs down every issue and every discussion.

It didn't used to be Us vs. Them. Something has happened in our society.

As to the original question. A one party system would probably be the end of us. I'd like to see 4 or 5 viable parties.

This would depend on which iteration of "left" or "right" we're talking about...

The "left" of JFK would be very different, almost the opposite, of the left of Obama or Biden "left", for instance.

The "right" of Reagan or Trump would be very different from the "right" of Bush as well...

How about instead of one party or another, change the laws, regs and fundraising to make it so anyone can compete and run then we could get rid of the dem party and have a peoples or any other party.

We don't have a "2 Party political system" in this country. We have a political system dominated by 2 political parties. There is a difference.

There are multiple political parties within the US political system obviously.

The question posted should not be about a "party" but about direction. More of where best to be on the political spectrum.

The country would be best served by a centrist legislature, conservative leaning Executive branch and fiercely conservative constitutional judicial branch.

Great point and exactly right two sides of the same coin.

There are multiple good answers above.

A 1 party system would be the end of our Democratic Republic.

The currently system has been deteriorating for at least 3 decades, the parties have changed. The Democrats have become ultra liberal, our way or the highway mantra. The philosophy of only the party of the Democrats can do right with their words and actions has been the most noticeable.

The Republicans seem to have morphed in what the old Democrat party use to be, the party of the working people, while still retaining the platform of smaller Federal government and “decrease of spending “.

Neither one alone would be beneficial. The system of checks and balances needs to be there, but not in the adversarial fashion it is now. What is going on now is terrible, it’s the behavior of a petulant child on both sides but mostly from what I see the side of the Democrats...Schumer, Schiff, Pelosi, Waters, Feinstein, the 4 woman “squad” with AOC as the leader, Hirono, and Nadler just to name a couple off the top of my head, not mention some of the governors out there who are just freaking looney toons.

If there wasn’t such a pushback against a true Libertarian Party from both sides I believe we’d see change, if both parties would actually recognize there is a large number of citizens in this country with those ideals. The main issue with that is educating the people on just what the Libertarian Party really is and it’s ideals and begin change at the local level to make it grow.

Maybe the best thing to change the way things are now is for all voters to drop their party affiliation and register as Independents. That may change how politics is played.

One party either way is bad. Socialists like Sanders are terrible. It’s hard to believe in my United States of America there is actually a person like him in our Congress and has been there for decades. These new, up and coming politicians like AOC and her squad are all wrong for our nation yet here they are and will probably stay. What that says about our people is something I’m not proud of as a citizen...as a second generation citizen. How our country has changed since my grandparents came here is amazing.

So that’s it...1 party bad, 3 legitimate parties better all working somehow together checking and balancing each other without the constant belittling and stupid rhetoric.

But do we have that option in the real world.  I gave the two directions we are facing.

A one (conservative) party America would be FINE by me.  Better than fine.

If we conservatives had some problems with them, we could talk about it rationally, instead of all the woke, SJW, PC, snowflake hysterics and mania.

Course with the current MSM and universities maybe we'd have that BS anyway.

The country is only one cycle away from one party rule. Even if President Donald J. Trump wins, by the time he finishes term 2, there will be enough young skulls of mush eligible to vote and many older conservatives will be on the wrong side of the dirt, to ever win an electoral college.
Social media giants will be in full control of the internet, Puerto Rico and D.C will be a state, there will be no electoral college, new yorkers will be in control of Florida, Cal will be in control of Texas, and the progressives will be in total control of the country until Revolution #III.

This is it.

Sadly, I fully agree with this, remember the left who voted for this now will have to endure the aftermath just like the rest of us.

You really think they can pass an Amendment to get rid of the Electoral College ? I guarantee that won't pass in "flyover country". All of the currently solid RED states will never vote to lose the Electoral College system of selecting the President. About the only thing that might have a chance is state / local people working to change the way the EC electors are selected - change it from "Winner take all" to "proportional".

I don't fear an amendment change as much as I fear the abolishment of the constitution altogether. The fact that the Supreme court will soon be a majority conservative almost guarantees an expanded court packed with progressives with the eventual control of a Dem administration.
Several solid red states appear to be only leaning red if the polls are true, but for the reasons already stated the next cycle will leave the solid red states in retreat.
