Rode up Hwy 92 yesterday, pulled out my cheap video cam hoping to capture some fall colors.  Unfortunately it appears that I missed peak, but there were still some nice colors and low traffic.

Any direction you point your front tire is beautiful around here, and I do feel blessed to live and ride in this area -- about six months out of the year.

92 looks very interesting going north from 50... is that where
you were? I get the idea you live near there somewhere...

Off topic but since your in the area, any inexpensive good hotels between Ridgeway and Sawpit/Teluride? The Angler Inn? looks nice just cant get anyone on the phone. Taking 145 south next summer. Anything neat to see on that road down to the 4 corners? Def stopping at the Ute tribal casino.  2funny

Oh man that's some nice scenery on that stretch!  Not familiar with the hotels but really great riding.  If you can make time ride the beautiful canyon between Norwood and Naturita.  If you have more time go up thru Uravan to Gateway and check out the auto museum there, very cool can spend an hour or two there.

http://gatewayautomuseum.com

I've been that casino once but didn't gamble.  Also the Four Corners is kinda a touristy gamble too, the vendors will try to get into your pocket but will dicker on prices for their turquoise and silver jewelry.

Going down 145 will get you near Durango. Me and Mitch stayed at
the clean well-run Adventure Inn from which you can walk to the
Serious Texas BBQ. I plotted an around-your-elbow non-touristy
route to Monument Valley on the BFGPS for the next day and
we went some crazy places...

We just went to here a mile or so to see what there was to see, the route
I plotted was mostly paved...

2funny  Does it ever! Many of our Western Colorado roads are similarly neglected!  It's the freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw cycle. Bad tar snakes and some nasty potholes.  There are even some lane drop offs on 92!

Just more obstacles to add to the fun and keep ya on yer toes!

Cottonwood Pass, on the other hand, is newly paved and a dream to ride IF you can catch it without traffic.  It'll be cracked and snaked in a matter of a few years I'm sure.

Thanks for posting...looks like a great day riding. Very similar roads and scenery to some of the roads I ride in the Cariboo region up here. Ya, those frost heaves can shake a filling to two loose if you don't see the bad ones coming up for sure.

Seth,

You do live in an amazing setting! I very much enjoy riding around that area, and I've stood in awe many times gazing upon the imagination inspiring, eye-popping sites and vistas available for the normally 'eastern oriented' traveler to attempt to comprehend. I've also enjoyed the rides you've led us on and others you've recommended... However...

I also agree it is not a year-round, perpetual-bliss condition there! I once spent four days in Gunnison holed-up because of snow. I've also felt the sting (and had the bruises to prove it) that rain does indeed come to that area on occasion, and that the drops can be large, cold, and 'impactful'. Still, very much worth a visit... I do prefer summer only, though... I am, after all, a tenderfoot, ya know...

You're lucky it was just four days Bruce.  I can remember years in the past that if you'd been around for that "surprise" early November storm you might have been hunkerin' down here 'til May!

Maybe one of these years I'll figure out how to swing the snowbird thing.  Until then I just keep putting another log on the fire.  And another.  And another.  And another.  And another.  And... well, you get the picture.
