Couple years ago now took a friend of mine to Springfield to pick up his H/D trike. On the floor in the front window they had a then new H/D stickered at a bit over 44 G. I Know 28+ is also too much fer a scooter. 44+ IS beyond idiocy. I'm quite happy with my relatively inexpensive Valkyrie Phatt Ghurl!  cooldude                                              RIDE SAFE.

well some people got money to burn, no doubt about it.

both next door neighbors both sides of me, one retired who has lt. colonel son in military who will be retiring soon around age 40 who buys him EVERYTHING (thus able to retire at only age 62),   the other owns his insurance company downtown,  both bought NEW one Honda pioneer 1000cc 5 seater UTV decked out and insurance guy bought just last week NEW a Polaris Razor 1000cc 4 seater TURBO.  Both UTV's are over 25K brand new purchase price and am guessing with accessories from factory new pushing 27K on up.

Insurance guy has to have the BEST ya know driving it downtown 1/2 mile to his insurance company now that our town opened up all roads to ATV/UTV use.  He will have the tires worn off of it on road pavement in 500 miles vs. me on OEM tires still on my 12 year old ATV with 3700 miles on it worth 5 grand tops.

They also both had decked out HD cycles a few years ago as well vs. my old 20 year old Valk.

agree, but not my neighbors.  The insurance guy got his business handed to him years ago from his Dad who owned the company and he rarely works lets his workers run the show downtown.  I got a quote from them on cycles/home/autos and absurdly high rate years ago.    Cannot believe how many fools are robbed of 1,000's of dollars per year just to say they bought local and yet never ever used their insurance for one claim.    My mother in law is like that as well keep telling her she needs to shop around for home/auto insurance for her 1 car insurance rate with home is near my 5 car rate and similar sized home yet she says she has a great relationship with that insurance company but has NEVER EVER used it the past 40 years of paying outrageous premiums.

Other neighbor and his wife not saying they did not earn their money and work hard for they make about the same as we do retiring early age 60 and 62,  but the military must be really paying their sons lt. colonels BIG BUCKS paying for everything and even able to retire comfortably at only age 40.   His 3 kids college already paid for,  he owns land in Kansas just to hunt, and just bought a getaway huge log home for 500K way up north along with a GM 3/4 ton diesel around 70K.   I guess from what neighbor say now retired,  the military also pays his kids all moving expenses and their home free as well and have seen pics of their home and is a mansion.     I guess the military has unlimited spending limits?  I highly doubt either one only age 60 and now about 64 (retired age 62) could afford to retire so early knowing about what they make if it not for their military son buying them everything they would ever need in retirement.  Plus, she just retired age 60 but she had GREAT govt. benefits pretty much free for everything and be surprised when they have to try getting stand alone insurance.  But hey,  their son will pay for it right?   cooldude

If I had either my mother in laws insurance company or the neighbors company insurance he owns I would be in negative income for my entire 2 week paycheck would go towards home/auto/cycles and then some.   Grin

Started buying used bikes when I was a teenager because I didn't have the money for a new one. Till this day I have never bought a new bike. There is always that guy out there with a nearly new example of whatever you want to buy or it might just catch your eye. I also tend to collect bikes, when I bought my Valkyrie I was up to 5 bikes. Today I'm at 2 but I'm looking for a Thruxton with light miles. Maybe a Speed Triple?  Depends if anything good comes on the market.

Short answer is no I would not pay $28K for any bike.

My answer as well also NO I would not pay over 10K though for any bike.  I could sell all my cycles and go well over 10K more like 16K just to own 1 cycle, but variety is the spice of life right?   Roll Eyes

Absolutely.   cooldude

I never count other people's money for I know not how they have come by it and I surely never assume it was/is ill gotten.

I bought my '98 Tourer new in July of 1998.  If I'd waited a year or two, Honda overproduced them, and was selling leftovers for heavy discounts.  But in 1998 Valkyries were in demand.  As I remember mine listed for a bit over $14,000, and I paid in the mid $13K range.  That was a LOT of money for a motorcycle in 1998.  To put it in perspective, back then you could buy a decent new car for that price, and I paid around $17K for a new '97 F150.

It's 22 years later and just about everything (except TVs and computers) has gone up in price.  The new Wings have ABS, fuel injection, a dual clutch automatic transmission, electric windshield, awesome infotainment, forkless front end, and much more.  $28K isn't unreasonable for one of the best motorcycles on the planet, and I've seen them selling for considerably less.

Well said. What does a new F150 cost now, compared to a Wing. What about a house in 1998 vs the same house now. The house I bought in 1998 for $91,000 sold in 2010 for $290,000.

Things are expensive. It sucks. But paying $28K for a wing today is no more of a stupid decision than buying a Valk in 1998 for $13,000.

I'll add that I still own that '98 Tourer.  I've ridden it over 175,000 miles, and the only serious repairs I've done were replacing a rear wheel bearing, and replacing the clutch damper plate.  It seemed pricey at the time, as my previous bike had cost less than $5,500.  But I have no regrets at all.

I'm not sure there's anything at all I'd spend 28K on in my retirement days.

Not even my own health, unless multiple docs convinced me it was necessary to save my life.  Even then I still might not do it if my chances were poor.

My new (and last) truck was only 26K, and I let my brother talk me into that one, though I'm real happy with it.

If I'm forced to move, the house will cost more than that, but I'll sell at twice the amount I'll spend for another one.

28 new sporting rifles would be fun (and stupid), but then I'd have to get another safe.

Q: Why in the world would you need 28 new ARs?!

A:   Just to watch your head explode.     (from the idea, not from shooting it)

not if I want to stay married, I am DONE...    4 auto drivers having 5 cars,  6 cycles for 2 cyclists, and 1 ATV, DUN!!!!!!!  We did have 8 cycles but my kid bought both of them and just recently luckily sold them before winter for his asking price.  I told him where the F am I going to keep 2 more cycles and he better find a place by mid November.    He listened to me for once.....    Wink  He is moving next summer in college from apt. NO garage to a 2 car garage house but like said, does me NO good this winter.    Now he has his eyes on a 1980 to 1983 1100 goldwing with or without fairing, bags, etc.  I swear he was born in the wrong generation only age 19 and he likes for some odd reason the cycles I grew up with in the 1980s.  Probably does not hurt the 1980s cycles are anywhere from 600 to 1500 bucks as well.....   At least he is not like the yuppie younger generation taking out a loan on a 12K new cycle on up in price which is so not worth it the little amount of time we both have to ride them per year.  Plus,  insurance on a newer cycle is 4-5x's the cost of any 1980 thru 2001 cycle.
