My Trump-Pence  (2016 version) lawn sign was stolen off the middle of my front lawn (15 feet from the curb)  yesterday at 5:21am   Someone had moved it a few days before and my neighbor then said he would adjust his camera so it faced the sign

Well, I know this was the time because my neighbor Josh showed me the video of a person in an SUV stopping in front of his driveway at 5:21am, running up to the sign and taking it to his car  He has an awesome security camera setup.  I may just get one myself soon.

So I put up a sign this morning that says

To the person that took our sign at 5:21am  Return it  We know who you are
If you don't your children will know the coward you are

Josh sent me an email just now saying he knows now who did it. He wants me to call the police first

What would you do?   Either way, he will be s hit in the neighborhood regardless of whether he is for one or the other.

He stole your property and you can prove it. It's theft. If the police choose not to bring charges you still showed him that his BS will not be tolerated. I would report it given your circumstances but that's just like...my opinion man.  Cheesy

I hate a thief and I don't care what they stole.

Call the police....   Only after he knows he's facing legal action would I offer to let him replace it with the entire neighborhood watching to include his family.

Go over to his house and paint Trump is King on his house with a four inch paintbrush.

After carefully check for cameras (but wear a big dress and wig anyway).

Public shaming is ineffective with these people I believe, his comrades will applaud his 'courage'.  Roll Eyes
You could out him anyway so conservatives in the area know he's a sneaky night crawler out stealing Trump signs.

Pressing charges will likely go nowhere?, if it has some possible traction I'd go the police route along with outing him.  police

I would call him and ask him nicely to bring back my sign, put it back and apologize to me personally or the option of dealing with the police if he gets bitchy about it. Be the better man than he'll ever probably will be. And having my SOB holstered .45 just in case.

I agree, unfortunately, I don't qualify.   Although, I do like the idea of telling him that we identified him and have him on camera.     Yeah, I've been a victim before and have no sympathy for a thief.

Nice responses (except for the dress and wig Jess but I give you points for humor)

Two doors down from me is a woman who is a country police

I am going to ask her advise Saturday morning if the sign is not returned.

Have already sent an email to one local paper but do not expect a follow up from any media

Will not tell her who it is, just in her experience what she would do

Good to get more opinions

By the way, Optimum does not have OAN network and I found out that Kamala Harris's press secretary is in charge of censoring at Twitter    Talk about the fox watching the henhouse !

Well points for humor is my goal.

What the dress and wig was really about was.... we can never again assume we are not on camera almost anywhere in civilization.

If you ever talk to this guy, have a witness with you.

And remember, in certain circles..... demanding/requesting a civil remedy in exchange for not pursuing criminal prosecution can be viewed as extortion.  Especially when the civil remedy involves a Trump sign.

if I knew where the thief lived and knew of him and not some psycho with a gun,  I would go knock on their door and tell him caught him on camera and return and plant my trump sign ASAP or will go to police with video.  If he gets pissy or argues, walk away and go to police.

staying at kids house 3 hours north in Eau Claire area last night truck ran fine 3 years old 45K miles and went to drive it sitting outside in driveway and service engine soon engine light was on.  NEVER had an issue driving 3 hours north late yesterday.  Checked oil and engine all over was fine fired it up ran fine ran it 1 mile to nearest gas station since needed gas anyways.  Guess what,  some local neighbor punk opened my gas cap and left it inside not clicked on causing engine light on, wasting 10 minutes of my time thinking something wrong in 35 degree morning temps.  Went to autoparts store borrowed his OBD scanner plug in and YEP, P code verified evap emmissions possible bad gas cap or some kind of hole in evap hose.   Cleared codes and all better now.

Why does some punk think they have a right to tamper with someone's 30K truck?  He better not have put crap down my gas tank either will find out tomorrow I guess?  My kid thought of getting security cameras since after they moved in this spring soon after someone broke the framework of the side door trying to get in while at work as well.   Nice neighborhood aye?   I think a side camera to that side door facing my truck parked along that side would have caught them both times.   They just lucky I was not out there to meet and greet them and able to catch them or they be dead or at least in hospital recouping from severe beatdown even if 12 year old punks.  I have ZERO tolerance for any of that crap at all.   I never messed with anyone else's  property and neither should anyone else. tickedoff

Get a screen shot from video and go to staples or somewhere and have a sign made up to put in its place.

On the sign simply say “ got ya” ...

That will get his attention real fast.

Evan, had this same thing happen a couple years ago to the county attorney. A guy took down his signs. I was at the courthouse and Mr. W . comes up to me and says he wants a warrant on Mr. A for taking down his signs, he had a witness who saw it, now he wants him arrested. I talked to the witness,  I had the probable cause to issue the warrant, but instead I arranged a call to the man and he got the message that he was going to be arrested unless he brought the signs back, apologized to Mr. W, and that would be the end of it. Gave him one hour to get it done.  He had left the county to go shopping and was about 45 minutes away.... He had to turn around and come back, get the signs out of the garbage dump and take them back and put them back up.    That did more to punish him than arrest and bail, etc.  Mr. W was pleased, Mr. A was not only embarrassed, but humbled in the process. some days it's just plain fun. 2funny

cooldude I'm in favor of public humiliation. The cops and courts likely aren't going to take it all that seriously to begin with. This guy is a freaking thief ! I'd explain that you are in possession of video of him in the act. I'd tell him you are a lawyer with lots of time on your hands because of the pandemic. And that you would like to come to an equitable agreement without involving the authorities. I think 2 Trump signs in his yard thru Nov. 3 would be acceptable.

Seems something similar happened here (well on the coast) in South Carolina.  The link is to the article about the incident and how the culprits were identified and tracked and the outcome.

What I find very interesting is that the culprit states the actions taken " were a brief lapse in judgement (sic) on my part"  Really?????

If you believe the statement from the culprit, well lets just say, you might need some help.

Here is the lead in to the story and the link.

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – The chairman of the Georgetown County Board of Voter Registration and Elections resigned Wednesday night after being accused of damaging political signs.

a brief lapse in judgement

More like a brief lapse in honesty.

I will never forget one day I was pulled over while driving and he asked for an explanation.  I gave mine.  He looked me in the eye and asked that's the truth, isn't it?  And I said yes sir, the complete truth (and it was).  He was quiet for a few seconds, then gave me my license back and said he wasn't going to give me a ticket.  You're the first person who's spoken the truth to me in a weeks.

Not that truth is always the best idea when talking with policemen.  Silence can be golden too.   Grin

This recently happened to 619 DW Guns & Ammo in NH. From video evidence, they were able to make an ID. This is their Facebook post from 3 hours ago as I type this reply:

   "Update:
We have been in contact with the sign vandal. He has accepted our terms to stand in front the store on Saturday and hold the Trump sign and wave at passer buyers. He can invite his friends. After.....the sign will be put back the way it was.
We have removed his personal info from the page and ask you wonderful people to abstain from promoting any action against his vehicle."
