 Sad Gone Sad

The "ALI RALLY" started here!

I met DDT and his good friend Jim here at this establishment by chance as many of you know. This little motel has been welcoming visitors coming into Calgary from the south end, for 50+ years! The Pub, although not as popular as in years past (especially at Stampede time) still had a following of old timers that have wet their whistles here for many years. Don't know why they changed the name to "Pub" as it was a genuine "Saloon".  The food was always good in both the restaurant and pub as well as being reasonably priced.

I have had breakfast here for many years myself, sometimes two and three times a week, with my  friends. Heck......you can't beat the $5.99 earlybird special! Fact is, I was having breakfast while Bruce and Jim were sitting out front of their motel room!
Time to find someplace else when and if things get back to normal......but it won't be the same. I wonder what the folks that worked here are doing, as well as the gals that waited on us.

Many places have gone down in Calgary due to this Covid stuff but somehow I didn't think it would happen to establishments that have been here so long......

Bad times for sure. Around here we have lost quite a few
businesses because of Covid. The most surprising for me
is Norfolk Southern Railroad closing the Linwood hump
yard causing no more trains to come through hickory NC
just a daily switch train. We use to have several trains
come through per day.
The Ali story is probably the best motorcycle story I have
ever heard. I tell riding friends about it and they are amazed
at how things happened to get the bike back to DDT.
The one part of the story that really causes a strange look
on their face is when I tell them how many miles are on the
the bike. Kinda shocks them.

Had both businesses been in financial decline before the virus hit, or did they succumb due to the shutdown imposed since?
All restaurant, bar, and hotel numbers (people, money) have been impacted; some have survived, some are barely holding on, and some are gone forever.  It is reality when a depression begins due to a health care crisis while concurrently a financial recession takes effect.
Perhaps someone will come along soon that has a vision for buying the business and reopening it again when times get better.  Remain hopeful. Cool

We have lost several businesses but it's not due to COVID-19.  It is the result of mitigation efforts mandated to fight COVID-19.  If you believe those measures were necessary then indeed those businesses died due to COVID-19.  I believe they were largely over reactions and probably caused more damage than would the disease have done without them.

I agree 100%  Covid is just the excuse for the ignorance going on now.

I am on the RIGHT side though.

Whether you call it the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus or anything else
the facts are
The virus came from China
The CCP which is by definition corrupt and godless hid it from the world and
allowed it out upon the world.
For that alone the CCP as an institution should die and be dismantled by the chinese people
NOT THE CHINESE PEOPLE as they are victims as are we

I think we need to deep state their ass

Local bars/restaurants were impacted at the beginning but quickly reimagined themselves as kerbside take out or delivery.

My local quickly set up outside ordering after that and that worked well for them with just dining on their patio. As rules have become less restrictive they are now taking orders from a hatch with a pop up tent giving customers in line protection from weather.

Food and drinks are brought to the patio tables rather than customers waiting to pick up their order to take to a table as was done at first.

In fact this hatch system is working so well they may keep to that.

All the bar stools - 18 -  are in use and a limited indoor amount of seating.

No one in the food biz has gone bust but I do know some were sailing close to the wind before the restrictions were eased.

as far as restaurants go mostly fast food types we last few outings wanted to stop at Culvers restaurant, a nice chain here mostly in WI area, to get a burger/fries/custard.  Every single time since the inside of most was closed and some still are has a line of vehicles thru the drive thru 10-20 back logged.  NO thanks.  I will not leave my vehicle idling for 20 minutes in line just to get an order and wait another 20 minutes in my car to get the food served to my vehicle.    It sucks most were not allowing to go into the building to take your order and then sit outside in your car with a number that would save 20 minutes idling in the drive thru line of 20 cars or so ahead.

A funny thing about this virus is the Chinese population in our area were wearing masks at least a year before the 1/2020 suspicion time frame. Keep in mind these are the ones that deemed worthy of education in our local engineering school but they also came from a country that air pollution is at its finest. Just a thought.

China is a few years behind the US enlightenment curve.  They are long game players. When they get where they want to be, they'll become enlightened.   Smiley   The CCP cares less about the people than the Dems or Repubs do.

It depends on the restaurant - some are doing pretty well with 50% occupancy / 6 feet between tables and some just couldn't make it. With cooler weather, some that had outside dining are going to have to think how they can comply.

As for us - 3 of 4 of my family are doing OK, 1 (the hypocrondriac) says he is on his 2nd round of C-19. Looking like we may be hosting "holiday dinner" here - probably the week following Thanksgiving.

Yes it is Dennis!

Funny thing, I have even received a call or two from ones that know we hung out there for breakfast saying they're sorry it's gone.
