Hi everyone,
I'm Tim, 35, from Splendora.  I have been a fan of these bikes for years, and I'm finally going to pick my first one up this evening. I'm looking for knowledge and maybe a modification or two.  I am ready for something I can ride 2 up comfortably.

Howdy from Driftwood!

If you're ever out this way, let me know and we'll hit some of these beautiful Hill Country roads.  The Valks seem to really like 'em!

Thanks for the welcome! I picked it up last night. While it looks pretty nice, it definitely needs a bit of work. It idles ok, but wont run above 30 or so without bogging down and dying. I believe I'll be rebuilding carbs right away, as it seems to be starving for fuel and the front 2 carbs are apparently leaking down into the cylinders. So I will be learning about Valkyrie carbs pretty soon.

Here's a good source for some carb parts...

https://redeye.ecrater.com

I just re-built my carbs and they now sport some Red Eye parts.  He ships pretty quick, too.

You'll probably need a new cover set, part #  16953-MBZ-B51
(This is the fuel valve that works off the #6 carb intake vacuum.  If it doesn't open all the way, your carbs get starved and your bike won't go very fast.)

Anyway, these are just some basics.  You'll know more as you dig in...

Also, the 1500 Tech page can be a good source for info (if you filter out the questionable info) and of course, the Old Tech Archive is a really great source for all things Valkyrie.

Just in case...you may need a lift adaptor to make life a bit more easier while working on your Valk.  Here's a lift adaptor video I did a while back...

Good luck!

Do you happen to have measurements for your jack adapter?

Learn about Valkyrie petcocks first, you might save yourself
a lot of effort  Wink ...

Welcome from Pearland!  These guys are spot on about the petcock.  Also sounds like you have a couple of float valves sticking and leaking fuel into the cylinders.
Be careful when starting the bike.  Gasoline doesn't compress like air does and you will break teeth off of the starter gear if it gets "hydrolocked" and you try to start it.

Good luck,

Got it, thanks guys. I will likely be pulling the carbs soon, I plan to replace the float valves, gaskets, jets and needles to start. I have just now replaced the petcock, but havent tested it since that was finished. Also on the list are all fluids and spark plugs.

Welcome to the group.  I live in spring and have had two valks.  If you need help let me know. I did my carbs two years ago. Found that the NGK Iridium plugs work great as an upgrade.  The old plugs do not wear very fast but the IR just run stronger. Do not separate the carburetor rack and the rebuild goes fast. I pull the jets out and soak them in carb cleaner then blast them with spray cleaner. I use a small jar as a soak container. I also have a right angle pilot screw driver and digisync for the final tune if you want to go to that level of tune. Watch out for the small pilot screw parts.  The oring, spring and washer like to run off.
Hydrolock is a major killer of these engines so do not allow any more gas to drain into the block.  Turn off petckock and open carb bowl drain if you need to.
