But don't take your eyes off the road.  Not for the faint of heart, that pass.   My buddy (expert off road rider whose ridden it more than a few times) says that he saw some guy roll a BMW off the side after a sliding dismount.  He has encountered people who have no business being up there as their skill level is "Green" trail while this place is a "Double Diamond". Embarrassed

Not a big 4-wheeler guy.  I'm much happier carving twisties on two wheels than creeping along those steep n' narrows on four.  Good thing that Jeep didn't crash into that feller like a wrecking ball.  Pucker o Rama!   Shocked

Wow! That is serious footage! I understand that is one scary route, no thanks I will pass.    I took a enduro Yamaha up and over Mosquito pass in 04 starting in Leadville. I will fully admit my heart was beating out of my chest when I arrived at the Stagecoach sign near the top.  It was awesome but no doubt intense.

Mother nature and gravity are always great equalizers when you get up in the high country, regardless of your chosen path of recreation. coolsmiley

Nothing notable for me when one realizes that they took a stage coach full of mail over it daily, weather permitting.   Shocked

I might walk it but that is about it or a small dirt bike able to touch the ground easily flat footed and light.  beautiful country though would love to see it some day.

accidents happen no doubt even to me few months ago ATVing I was going over 3 foot uneven ATV trail and a huge 4 foot boulder in middle of trail and I accidentally blipped the throttle going 1 mph and OVER I went on the side of my ATV, lucky NOT fully on top of me or 800lbs. on my 290lb. frame not be good.  It took all my wife and me (2up atv) could do to upright it from it's side on that darn boulder while I think pulling my shoulder/arm muscle trying to push/lift it upright again.  Very hard to deadlift or bench press 800lbs. even with 2 people.

I informed park ranger to take those darn rocks sitting in a pile in his county park and fill in that large GAP on the trail is dangerous, after that rollover ruined my trip that day and the next day was not going out all banged up from falling down from only 4 feet off the ground falling hard on my left hip and leg and shoulder.  He knew EXACTLY where I was talking about and he said there were other areas nearly as bad in his own park which really irked me was his JOB to make the park safe and he failed.

I chickened out @ the 3rd. switchback coming from Leadville in a 98' Blazer rental. Done some filming after I got it turned around and the truck slipped ever so slightly with the wife in the passenger side. The words yelled would have made a sailor blush and recorded to boot! Would have loved having my ole' XL250 otherwise the west side seemed very doable. My last adventure was Weston Pass in our SX4 HB Suzuki. Pretty easy but SX4 made easy work of it and never touched bottom the whole way but did take a couple hours.

I used to do a lot of rock crawling in my Bronco II, back when I was hang gliding 25+ years ago.  Took my son over Black Bear Pass then - had him run the video camera so he would be occupied and not so aware of the danger.  It is VERY STEEP, off camber, loose rock / shale, very narrow with 2,000ft cliffs.  It is so steep the tires slide and little rock mounds pile up in front of the tires as they slide.  You have to release the brake, hop over the mounds and get back on the brake immediately before building speed - all while engine braking in granny gear, and get her stopped before you arrive at the hairpin switchback immediately ahead.  This is with the tires on the edge of the cliff with gravel from washes making the truck lunge towards the abyss.  White-knuckler for sure - for experienced, cool composure drivers only.

In the video linked above, at the start the driver has already gone past the hairiest part described above.  This is the west face of the box canyon, the highest road section shown in the book picture below.  The scary steep narrowest part is in the corner of the box, the face is to the SW above this section.

We have also done Mosquito Pass, Imogene, Cinnamon, Engineer and many others in the Colorado Pass Book.  Love the San Juan Mountains for these adventures.  Got a lot of hairy stories but I'll leave them for another time.  Here's the CPB page on Black Bear.  Read especially the highlighted parts.
