I have a neighbor who's obviously patriotic, and also (naturally) a Trump supporter.  Yesterday he noticed the flags on his entry gate were damaged.  At first we thought it might be some democrat vandals.  But since the plastic Trump sign wasn't damaged and there was no evidence of projectiles hitting the gate, we decided it must be some kind of bird, bug, or other critter.  Or maybe the flags were made in China and designed to disintegrate.  Any opinions?

Nylon all weather flags?  Looks like projectiles fired through them.   Maybe burning projectiles, is there evidence of burns in the holes?  I'd also look down range for projectiles.  If projectiles, the erratic pattern makes them look like maybe longer range shots (lobbed over the fence and sign).

Some chemical that melted the nylon?  Spray can with little nozzle for distance?

Or something in the flag material that attracted birds (or some critter) like catnip? (see no droppings though)

If vandalism, I'm getting pretty tired of this childish tantrum behavior.

Total WAG, but I'm thinking shotgun bird shot... The main load of birdshot making the ragged hole on the left and the wadding making the cleaner hole on the right...

Total WAG though...

Behind the flags on the upper right side of the photo is an evergreen tree of some kind. How close is it to the flags and how windy has it been?

That is what is looks like to me. A branch from that tree rippin at the flags. Maybe a stick poking through. It would seem consistent with a tear on one (small branch cutting), a hole in another (end of a small branch poking) and the general tattering (pine needles) of the body of the flag.

I suspected shotgun at first. But I don't know. It seems too irregular of patterns, and I would think the sign would have been shot. Maybe the gate got swung open on the tree, and rubbed thru the night ?

Doesn't look like a shot gun hole. You would see more of a pattern or dings in the gate.

I wouldn't get to whipped up about it. People got all whipped up about little gravestone American flags disappearing, we'll find whoever did this etc. etc. Turned out it was a squirrel running off with them. Actually I looked this up on You tube and there are many stories of squirrels grabbing flags and putting holes in them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihq4xjfFYWk

I had squirrel (or fox) chewing holes in a car cover this spring.

Not only a pretty new spendy cover, but the toenails did the paint no good either.

That is consistent with the the larger holes across the top (within easy access to the metal arch), but harder to explain the many smaller holes down the flags.  And what about that hole in the metal arch on the right (with what looks like a fresh paint chip)?  Although that has bolt hole uniformity.

But clearly, some animals are attracted to and irritated by new changes in their environment.  We had a cat that got agitated by any changes in furniture locations in the house.

A thick bead of this stuff over the arch (or maybe just heavy on each side for about 4 feet) would deter squirrels (and the owner too).  https://bird-x.com/bird-products/gels-liquids/bird-proof-gel/?attribute_pa_bird-proof-gel-quantity=3-pack&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwZD2jNrM7AIVzsDACh1D4AWhEAQYASABEgJ1EvD_BwE

I used a product called Tanglefoot on my fence cap rails to deter squirrels using it as a freeway, but it was so sticky some birds left their legs in it.  (so I stopped using it)

Thanks for all the theories.  That video solved the case.  It has to be squirrels.  We have a bunch around here.  The video also mentioned that the flags are made from a vegetable based material, so rodents like them.  That's the same problem as we're seeing with car wiring, where the insulation is soy based, which rabbits find tasty.
