I wonder if this still exists somewhere. You have to take your hat off to the designers and engineers of the early 20th century. No Cad back then!

The Lycoming XR-7755 is the largest piston aircraft engine ever built in the US. The 36-cylinder, single overhead cam, water-cooled behemoth displaced 7756 cubic inches and made 5,000 horsepower. Unfortunately, it never became operational, as the jet age raced by.

The original engine does, and has recently been restored. It's on display at The Smithsonian.

Looks like it set up to turn counter-rotating props.  I'll bet timing is fun.

Is that the first Valkyrie prototype motor? Not enough chrome for starters, but probably no need to wish for a 6th gear either.

Yeah, needs more chrome.
