TN is a beautiful state, no doubt. What you can be assured of is every state is going to find a way to get (what they think) is their fair share of your pay check. I used to work in Memphis but, lived in northern Mississippi. Memphis taxed my income. TN has a wheel tax that is pretty significant. One way or another, every state will find a way to get their share of tax money. TN offers some nice things, scenery, very good to decent roads, mild climate and some very good people but, no where is perfect. Rams

In Minnesota we have a Hennepin county- Minnesota sales tax of7.525%. Then most cities add a sales tax on top of that.

IMHO, no good Tennessean should ever go on the TV/Utube inviting foreigners (from other states) to move there.
Tennessee is one of the very best states in the nation for low taxes and (longstanding) conservative govt and they should keep it that way for as long as possible.

TN has a wheel tax that is pretty significant. What is "wheel tax" and how much is significant? Description. Counties may levy a privilege tax on motor vehicles, commonly called a wheel tax. The tax may be levied by one of the following methods: (1) by passage of a resolution by a two-thirds vote of the county legislative body at two consecutive regular county legislative body meetings; (2) by passage of a resolution by the county legislative body by a regular majority with approval by referendum provided for in the resolution; and (3) by private act. Notwithstanding a population classification exception, the two-thirds majority resolution method is subject to a referendum if a petition signed by a number of registered voters equal to 10 percent of the number of voters in the last gubernatorial election is filed with the county election commission within 30 days of passage. T.C.A. ยง 5-8-102(c). Distribution: Distribution of these tax revenues may be for any county purpose specified in the private act or resolution levying the tax. https://eli.ctas.tennessee.edu/reference/county-motor-vehicle-privilege-tax-wheel-tax

That sales tax in Tennessee hits the poor folks the hardest, as they spend everything they earn. A couple of years ago, a store in Johnson City had the Telecaster guitar I was looking for. It played perfectly. But I couldn't bring myself to pay 9.5% sales tax to a state I no longer lived in. Ended up buying one online from an excellent dealer in Kentucky.
Yes, the goverments figure out some way to get our money. No state income tax can mean higher property tax. In Tennessee if you have a high income and don't spend anything, you benefit.
One benefit to Tennessee living I have not mentioned. Good looking women.
I do not believe you on the good looking women part until you prove it with PICS.... Just kidding.... Yah, I like the no income tax part but the 9.5% sales tax does seem pretty darn high. I guess if you do not spend much and make more you are doing well there. I passed thru one side of TN on way down to Florida and saw Nashville in the far distance. From what little I saw of TN was a beautiful state to be riding anything 4 or 2 wheels in.

Indiana has a "Wheel Tax" as well. Everything from trailers, to motorcycles to cars and trucks. Minimum fee is $25 per year. When they instituted it was just going to be for a few years until they got the roads in better condition. That was over 20 years ago and its never going away. Just another way to get more taxpayer money.

Tennessee does not have a wheel tax, but some counties do. Probably most by now. Mine does not. I would be ruined if/when we did. I need not mention the county where I live, we are all full.

I just thought that was funny and hopefully a joke vs. seemed serious about it. Yep DG is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have one a half mile down the road from me. Since we had two of the grandsons every day when schools were closed during this damnpanic, we used the daily visit as bribery in exchange for good better behavior. Each got $1 + tax to spend each trip. Every day the younger headed straight to the plastic dog poop, and each time was over ruled by the mamaw in chief.

Greene County TN wheel tax is 55$ when registering any motorized on road vehicle (My 7 bikes share 3 license plates) . Our wheel tax covers the counties garbage disposal programs. We have several location around the county to dump and recycle household garbage, tires, used oil, appliances, batteries, etc. Very Convenient! to compare housing markets, my mortgage payment for my beautiful mountain view log home is less than my cornfield view apartment rent payment was when I lived in Iowa #nevergoback

Only thing you can't dispose of without paying is used asphalt shingles. Sales tax is 9.75 and groceries @ 6.75 The county makes money off the used oil, cardboard, batteries, scrap steel, plastic, and appliances. We are west of Memphis
