So... I haven't had to pay a sitter for a few decades... What is the going rate for a 16 year old to come babysit for a few hours for one kid while we go out?

My niece was telling me $8-$10

But she is a daycare worker, for a high dollar corporation.

Surely a babysitter doesn't make more than minimum wage? Maybe I need to send her a 1099?  Wink

That sounds about right. Plus food and sodas and a ride home afterwards.

It depends on what a few hours really is.

I wouldn't send one home after an evening with less than a $20 bill, but then I'm a little fiscally irresponsible.   Wink

Oh, my youngest is almost nineteen. I haven't hired a babysitter in over ten years.  Maybe my advice isn't very useful.

Around here (metro Detroit) you'd have to pay $10-15 per hour with a 3hr. minimum and most likely alot closer to the upper end of that pay scale. A good sitter will cost you,....I know. And when my daughter was sitting she usually got better than $20 per hour, but she was a remarkably responsible kid and that is hard to come by.

Do you want to pay a good person $20 per hour, or go with the low bidder for your child?

Gee, I got $.50 an hour, and got stuck with 7 kids, 3 with chicken pox..... and the parents left before I got there.  Probably because they figured I'd leave if I found out the conditions while they were there.

Babysitting sounds better today than it was in the 70s.

Thanks Everyone. The going rate up here in the frozen north was $9.
I wish someone would pay me $9 to watch TV and take a nap.  Grin

I figure babysitting is alot like firefighting or any other emergency service ... a lot of time spent sitting around waiting for something to happen.  The babysitter may get to watch TV and take naps, unless or until something goes wrong -- kid falls and gets hurt, wakes up with belly ache, etc.

Rate depends on the condition of the house when we get home...and whether the sitter is asked again.

$10 - $15 is the norm...no minimum...no friends!!!

I pay mine $6 an hour but I don't ever get them past 15 1/2.  By then they have boobs and a life.  I always kick in a little extra that happens to round up to whatever I have in my pocket.  A 16 year old that you don't have to haul back and forth is worth $8 and the house better be cleaner than when you left and multiple kids.

EXACTLY  MP!

my daughter gets $20 from the lady down the road while she goes to the gym to work out for a few hours.

her daughter is about 5 years old, with a 2 year old brother.

look at it like this, you don't want to hear "sorry can't watch your kid" when you really need someone.

Yeah, but back then you could go to a movie and get a coke and a bag of popcorn all for about $1.50!

Ahh, the good ole days...
