Hey all,

I got my hands on a set of Viking pipes a while back, and want to repack them before I put them on my IS.  I’ve got the baffles out, and I’m now debating what exactly to put back in it.

I have found a company that has stainless steel muffler packing, but don’t know that this is the best thing to put in there. Does anyone have any suggestions as to give these the best mellow yet awesome sound that they deserve?

Thanks for any help!

Our member Mark T builds exhaust pipes, and his Horseapple Ranch is a site sponsor.

I'd ask him.

SS is a good packing. It’ll last forever. What happened to the original packing?

The original looks like a mouse nest on steroids.

stainless steel wrapped around the core and then fill the rest with https://www.ebay.com/itm/CERAMIC-SILENCER-EXHAUST-MUFFLER-PACKING-KIT-1-THICK-X-12-X-24-FOR-4-STROKE/111478197654

I have to re-do mine.  I didn't use the SS wrap first and the ceramic packing is wearing out after 30k miles.  many say the SS helps provide a deeper tone.

many use this for the SS in fact the company list their coarse one for mufflers and I will be using this.
Their website shows it available on a roll which I'm thinking will be best way to do a muffler.  https://lustersheenonline.com/shop/lustersheen-1lb-434-stainless-steel-wool-reels/

Thanks for the links!  Wonder how much one roll would do?  Probably going to order two so I have enough.

the original packing was a ? fiberglass material..you can google up exhaust packing materials-the metal inserts weren't jam packed on mine-you might play with the amount wrapping material for the sound and db you want

Just a follow up to this thread.  I used the products that 98valk linked.  Only needed one roll of the stainless steel, and only about half of it.  Did require two batts of the fiberglass that was linked.

Went together snug.  The combination of the SS and the fiberglass really fills the space. Looking over the baffles,  the hold down areas in the baffle cores were screwed up.  Have a bolt in each one, but not sure they will do much to hold the baffles in place.

I’ll be heading down to the bike the second week of April...will get to install them, and see how they sound.
