In Newburgh about 45 minutes from me is a museum that has a large room dedicated to every year Indian from the 1st year
If it is still open next year it will be a stop on our fall ride

Those gas pumps were the improved version. I remember some previous pumps where you had to grab a big handle on the side and pump it back/forth which filled a big glass vessel on top. You could see how much fuel you were getting, when you reached the amount you wanted just stop pumping and the gas ran into the tank via gravity feed. My cousin restored a '47 Indian, looked great...he did a beautiful job. He was like Chris...parked it in the living room, much to his wife's dismay. He always told her to relax....it's not a Harley so don't worry about oil drips. She still insisted on a pan so he had the pan chromed first then put it there, just to appease her.  |

those old Indians look practical and comfy. BIG comfy seat and front/rear fenders to block the road spray for roads were gravel/mud back then.
I only remember being so young age 50 in the 70's where most gas stations still had the rotary dial going up on price and amount of gas and made more noise when running. For some reason those old pumps you could control the amount of gas going in much easier at very slow speeds. Some current gas station pumps jump and GUSH gas out that I give up filling up my cycles that last 50 cents to 1 buck for fear of making a mess on the tank.

I started pumping gas at my dad's Enco station in Chicago's South side, It was 1966 and I was 7. One time a guy came in and wanted 10 gallons.. I thought he said $10.00 worth so was filling the tank when he stopped me, I was scared I'd done something really bad but the customer was cool and laughed about it.. he even gave me a tip  . Gas was .36 cents a gallon if I remember right. |

Reminds me of another gas station story. My best buddy and I got our first W2 withholding jobs pumping gas (15). So I see him walking away from a Corvair with the water bucket. What did you do Rich?
She wanted her oil and water checked. The oil was fine on the stick, but the water was low and I filled it up.
Rich, there's no radiator on a Corvair, what did you put the water in.
Gulp, I guess the oil fill hole.

Well done Rich. You have a fine future in the pump jockey career field. (sadly, he didn't) Haha Whoops! When I turned 16 I was out on a service call, some guy had slid off the icy road into a ditch. My dad had a 73 Ford 4 x 4 pickup with a manual trans with a very low granny gear on the floor he used for plowing snow. I threw the hooks on the guys bumper and proceeded to yank the bumper off the car.   Then a year later some girl ran a red light while I was towing a car using the old sling setup, I ran into her and the car I was towing ended up on top of the tow truck.. ahhhh the memories Luckily nobody was hurt. |

hi-test, the way my co-worker at the Exxon Car Wash did...
