Is it necessary to take the gauges off, the forks off to adjust the torque on the steering bearing?

If you have adjusted the torque on your steering bearings, I could use some guidance (help).

Thanks

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Yes, but not the forks, unless you replace them. Take gauges off-easy to do, remove the chrome nut, lift off the bars and upper tree. Lay towels/blanket on tank to lay the bars on. The nut is there. Trying to remember since its been 6 months. Just bend the tabs away on the castle looking washer. Torque to how they say to do it. If you do need to replace them, be sure to retorque after a few thousand miles. It made mine easier to check without the front wheel on. It made the front end lighter. Thats how I noticed they needed retorqed. Bars were loose without wheel on. Fine with it on.

Did you try and check the pre-load?? Regardless you'll need to raise the front end and a couple stands under the engine guards will work.. Make sure the forks swing easily and smoothly with no hitches or binding.. Attach a spring scale to one fork and from the straight ahead position see much 'tonnage' it takes to get the forks starting to move.. It should be 1.5 to 2.5  #.. Less and they are too loose and more is too tight.. The top bridge/clamp has to be removed to adjust the stem bearings.. The torque on the bearings is 9 lb/ft on IS and 12 lb/ft on Std/tour..

What makes you feel the need to mess with the steering stem bearings?
